A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
These are exciting times at
Oklahoma City University. Our
dream of having a seminary on our
campus is beginning to materialize.
Starting this fall, we will establish
on our campus the Saint Paul School
of Theology at Oklahoma City
University. In an exciting show of
confidence, the Oklahoma United
Methodist Conference voted to
support this wonderful endeavor
at its annual meeting held at OCU
in May. The university’s partnership with Kansas City, Mo.-based
Saint Paul School of Theology will
create an extension site to provide
improved access for Oklahomans
seeking to study for the ministry
without leaving the state. Our
mission as Oklahoma’s United
Methodist university is to provide
students with quality instruction
that encompasses scholarship and
service. Seminary classes fit squarely
within that mission.
Construction on several important projects is nearing completion.
Our new Ann Lacy Softball Field
is under construction on the north
side of the Freede Center and will
be completed this summer. On the
south side of the campus, another
significant project is underway. The
Edith Kinney Gaylord Center has
undergone a complete renovation
and has been expanded to house all
of the Ann Lacy School of American
Dance and Arts Management under
one roof. It will also be finished this
summer and a grand opening celebration is being planned for early

October. Our new student residence hall, located
on the site of the old Frederickson Field House and
tennis courts, will house its first occupants this fall.
Its amenities rival those found at any university in
America and is a proud addition to our existing housing. The final project in progress and one in which
our family takes great pride, the Tom and Brenda
McDaniel University Center, is almost complete and
will be dedicated this fall.
Our spring undergraduate commencement was
something special. An honorary degree was awarded
to a renowned American composer and songwriter
from Oklahoma, Jimmy Webb, who performed at the
ceremony. He was introduced by OCU’s former Miss
America, Jane Jayroe Gamble, who also delivered an
inspiring commencement address. Webb and JayroeGamble were high school classmates from Laverne,
Oklahoma.
Our athletics program has introduced two new
sports, sculling and women’s wrestling. Head
wrestling Coach Archie Randall has signed 33 girls
from ten states across the country. Head rowing
Coach Mike Knopp recently introduced sculling to
his program with the goal of becoming an Olympic
training center in the sport. The Oklahoma City
University Head of the Oklahoma Regatta continues
to grow. This year it will again include collegiate
racing, and will also take place alongside the USA
Rowing World Challenge, which will showcase
top international rowing talent from the most
competitive teams in the world as they prepare
for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Night racing,
inaugurated for the nation at our regatta last year,
will again take place under the lights. Both events
are part of the 2007 Oklahoma Centennial Regatta
Festival, October 11-14.
Stars athletics, in a record-breaking year, captured
NAIA National Championship titles in men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf and softball and our
rowers garnered two championships at the renowned
Dad Vail Regatta. Our women’s volleyball and
men’s wrestling got off to great starts in their
inaugural seasons. Learn more about athletics on
pages 19 and 20 of this magazine.

Magazine. Starting on page 21, you’ll find a list of
the people and organizations that make Oklahoma
City University the shining success it is – these folks
deserve our thanks for helping begin the renaissance
we enjoy today. As you glance through the list, if
you see a familiar name, pick up the phone or drop
them an email to let them know how much we all
appreciate what they have done for Oklahoma City
University! It is only with this support that we
continue our tradition of attracting great students.

OCU student Jana Wingo won
the Non-finalist Talent Award.
Smith will compete in the Miss
America pageant in January. Her
platform is “Seatbelts Save Lives.”

Broadway headliners Kristin
Chenoweth and Kelli O’Hara were
among the stars returning home
March 30 for a musical tribute to
Florence Birdwell, their renowned
Oklahoma City University voice
teacher. Birdwell was the guest of
honor at “Starry Night,” a benefit
concert at the Civic Center Music
Hall celebrating a half-century
of teaching excellence. Proceeds
from the evening will establish
an endowed faculty chair in her
name. Tribute co-chairs were
Richard Sias, Lou Kerr, and Jane
Jayroe-Gamble. The event featured
performances by the Oklahoma
City Philharmonic and by Birdwell
students, including Kristin
Chenoweth, Tony Award winning
singer/actress and Sony Classics
recording star; Kelli O’Hara, twotime Tony Award nominee; Lara
Teeter, Tony-nominated for “On
Your Toes”; John Sawyer, member
of world premiere companies of
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Whistle
Down the Wind” and Frank
Wildhorn’s “The Civil War”;
and Barbara DeMaio Caprilli,
international operatic soprano
and Puccini and Verdi specialist
who has performed at La Scala.

exam is 87%. Of the 26 OCU Law
graduates who sat for the bar
exam in February, 25 passed.

OCU LAW’s bar pass rate
was the highest in the state in
the category of first-time takers
in February. It was also the highest pass rate in some 15 years for

Adds New Degree Programs
The university’s board of
trustees has approved a new
Bachelor of Science in research
and data analysis and a new
Bachelor of Music in church music.
The music degree program
replaces a Bachelor of Arts in
sacred music track. Mark Belcik,
associate dean of OCU’s Wanda
L. Bass School of Music, said the
new degree ties in with an added
emphasis on organ and keyboard
performance.
The new research and data
analysis program partners the
Petree College of Arts and Sciences
with the Meinders School of
Business for a core of mathematics, statistics, and research design
courses. Additionally, students can
choose from several concentration
areas including mathematics and
statistics, social science, marketing,
economics, and finance.

begin offering package
deals for
some of
its degree

programs beginning in the fall
2007 and spring 2008 semesters.
Three degree programs may
now be purchased as packages:
the Master of Science in Nursing
(education track), the RN-to-BSN
program and the Bachelor’sto-BSN program. Tuition for all
required courses is frozen at
the starting rate, which means
students will not experience
tuition increases for the duration
of the program. Package rates
are as follows: Bachelor’s-to-BSN
Program, for students who start
January 2008 is $38,500; RN-toBSN for students who start
between August 2007 and January
2008 is $18,500; and the Master
of Science in Nursing (education
track) for students who start in
August 2007 is $28,000.

Entrepreneurial Center
Oklahoma City University has
named a new director to lead
members of the entrepreneurial
community in their pursuits
at OCU’s Meinders School of
Business.
Duke R. Ligon, formerly a senior
vice president and general counsel
for Devon Energy Corporation,
assumed his role as director of the
Love’s Entrepreneurship Center
this spring. Ligon was named
senior vice president at Devon
in 1999. He joined the company
in 1997 as vice president and
general counsel.
Ligon practiced energy law for
12 years before working at Devon.

New Year’s Day performance at
the Rose Parade on national television. The dance company joined
with OCU alumna and Tony
Award-winning actress and singer
Kristin Chenoweth as well as the
Oklahoma All Star Centennial
Band to open the parade in
Pasadena, Calif.
Oklahoma City University’s
dancers also gave a performance
at the Pasadena Ritz Carlton
for the parade’s board of
directors’ banquet on
December 30.

was thrilled to be a part of the
Rose Parade.
“What an honor it was to be a
participant and share the spotlight
with OCU friends, Susan Powell
and Leona Mitchell,” she said.

well as Miss America 2006 Jennifer
Berry and the Oklahoma All

Learn from Alums
in the Big Apple

R
elaxing on a picturesque
beach may be the ideal Spring
Break for many college students,
but for 61 performing arts majors
at Oklahoma City University the
Spring Break of a lifetime was
spent taking a bite out of the
Big Apple.
OCU dance, music and theatre
students took the opportunity
to get a jump start on Broadway
auditions and Manhattan apartment hunting thanks to the
OCUNYC Alumni Chapter and
a generous grant from university
trustee Ann Lacy. Oklahoma City
University alumni working in
various areas of New York show
business served as instructors for
12
about a dozen classes on “making
it” in New York City during special workshops that week. The trip
and classes were free to students.
“We really tried to give the
students a complete taste of the
business and offer them classes in
almost every single area necessary
for a successful theatre career,”
said Lyndy Franklin ’02 and
president of OCUNYC. Franklin
is the dance captain for the
Broadway revival of “A Chorus
Line.” “We wanted to expose them
to some of the industry’s most
prominent members. It was
important to gather the best of
the best and for the students to
be able to get to know these

amazing individuals.”
The faculty included alumni
Kelli O’Hara ’98, a Tony Award
nominee; Amy Burnette ’96, a
former Radio City Rockette; Jon
Warren ’02, of “Wicked”; Jerry
Steichen ’86, a music
director and conductor;
and Franklin. Other faculty included Jonathan Groff,
a Tony nominee from “Spring
Awakening”; Rachel Hoffman, of
Bernard Telsey Casting; Megan
Larche, of Binder Casting and
Fox Theatricals; Jen Waldman,
of “Wicked”; Amy Dolan, from
Actors’ Equity; Tim Santos, from
Radio City Music Hall; Elaine
Winslow, athletic trainer for Radio
City Music Hall;
and Igor Goldin,
of the American
Musical and Dramatic
Academy and the Society
of Stage Directors and
Choreographers. Classes
ranged from dance, choreography and voice to equity,
injury prevention, finding
agents, and NYC 411—a rundown
on everything performers need to
know to live in New York City.
“Everything they offered was so
helpful,” said Casey Bryan, dance
management junior. “I didn’t
know anything about equity cards
and how it all worked. It’s clearer
to me now that it’s better to get
smaller roles and work your way
to an equity card so that you get
more experience. I also assumed
I would need an agent right
away, but I was glad to find out
it’s really up to you when you’re
ready for one.”

I was very proud of myself for going
through with it.”

made it real to me
was here were these
people who graduated
from OCU and they have
jobs now,” Bryan explained.
“Knowing they are all
working and auditioning proves, there’s still
hope for me.”
Exploration and
challenge were key
workshop elements.
“The workshop was not a
walk in the park for them,”
Franklin said. “Our overall
objective was to create a
safe space for all of them to
step outside their comfort
zones and try some new
things. They jumped in
with both feet and tried
everything, and had a
fantastic time doing so.”
Classes were divided
by subject-type rather
than skill level or year.
Freshmen voice majors
were singing alongside
theatre seniors and graduate students. Franklin said
the overwhelming amount
of positive feedback from
students meant success
for everyone
involved.
“I think
many of the
students took
away a greater
knowledge of everything they need to work
on to ready themselves for
a career in New York City
theatre,” she said.

from casting directors was one
of the biggest things for me,”
she said. “I wanted to hear why
they would or wouldn’t pick me.
The workshop was harsh and

have been through the exact same
things that I will go through,” he
said. “I loved being around all the
OCU people. It feels like I have a
family with them. I love them and
they will be with me for the rest
of my life.”

OCUNYC and acted as a student
liaison and classroom coordinator
during the workshop.
“I don’t think anyone could
better understand what these
students are going through at this
point in their lives than those who
have been there before them,” he
said. “We were excited to share
with them what we’ve learned
through our years of living in
New York City. This workshop
was a great compliment to
everything taught at OCU.”
Matt Udland ’03 and his wife,
Leslie Davis ’04 helped organize
and execute the workshop in
addition to teaching the NYC 411
class. Among the advice the couple
gave students was to utilize the
OCU network in New York.
“Working with the alumni
allows the students to acquire
strict, but the
alumni gave us
a comforting
feeling. They
pushed us and told
us it’s worth it.”
Nance said a move to New
York City could be in her future
and if she does land in the Big
Apple, she will immediately want
to find other Oklahoma City
University alumni.
“I wouldn’t even know where to
start if I didn’t have them to talk
to,” she said. “Websites and books
tell you where auditions
are, but we need a
little extra help—
like how to go
through with
the contract,
who to work for
and who not to
work for.”

Michienzie tapped into perhaps
one of the most unique yet most
valuable assets of being a part
of the OCU family. The heat of
competition can be a downfall for
many who try to tear others down,
but as Franklin explained, OCU is
a family that builds each other up.
“This career is not an easy one,”
she said. “We face rejection, tight
funds and frustration a lot. It only
makes things more difficult when
you find yourself in competition
with your peers. We at OCUNYC
are trying to create an atmosphere
of support and friendship. We take
care of each other, we see each
other’s shows, recommend our
friends for jobs and spend time
together. Life is so much richer
with a community of support and
that’s what OCUNYC is all about.” l

M
y wife, Joann, and I will celebrate
our 60th wedding anniversary
on September 21, 2007. After returning from the service, I enrolled at OCU
with other veterans in January of 1946.
I was seated next to Joann Higgins
in Dr. Cleveland’s adjustmental psychology class and was writing with a
new Reynolds ball point pen. It was
colorful and a new type of pen. Joann,
being left-handed, had to curl her hand
around when writing with a regular
pen and was fascinated with mine. She
asked if she could try it and, of course,
I obliged. This led to our first date for a
school mixer and was the beginning of
a courtship which led to our marriage
in the fall. For this, if no other reason,
I will always be indebted to OCU.

daughter-in-law Jody Gooden ’86 as the 2007 Young Mother
of the Year.
