Purpose This course is a continuation of Anatomy and Physiology of the Human I. The following systems are studied in detail: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive, and endocrine. The lab work involves related physiology exercises, microscopic exercises and the dissection of the cat with its comparison to the human. The components, Lecture and Laboratory, of this course are completely taught via distance learning. Dissection is an academic requirement for certain biological science courses at Allegany College of Maryland. It is the professional judgment of the biological science faculty that there are no adequate substitutes for dissection in the teaching and learning of anatomy at the college/university level, especially for those students who are preparing to practice in a healthrelated career such as nursing. The faculty wholly supports the humane treatment of animals. Allegany College of Maryland does not support the unapproved methods of animal acquisition and euthanasia that are sometimes portrayed as occurring. Thus, all of the animals used in our classes are obtained from agencies/businesses that are licensed and certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Page 3 of 13 B. General Objectives 1. To help students acquire a depth of knowledge in at least one natural science discipline. 2. To prepare students for advanced academic work; e.g., at a four-year university, graduate, or professional school. 3. To hold students throughout the course to high standards of intellectual performance. 4. To teach students methods of scholarly inquiry, scientific research, and/or problem definition and solution. 5. To instill in students a life-long commitment to learning. 6. To help students achieve deeper levels of self-understanding as pertaining to human anatomy and physiology. 7. To have students develop a broader understanding of the vocabulary of science and specifically anatomy and physiology. 8. To encourage students to become conscious of the important moral issues of our time as related to human anatomy and physiology. 9. To provide opportunities for students to prepare for specific medical careers; e.g., nursing. 10. To protect the right of faculty and students to present relevant, though unpopular, ideas in the classroom, and maintain mutual trust and respect among students, faculty, and administrators. III. COURSE POLICIES A. Attendance/ Completion of Assignments 1. Lecture assignments are given for each week of semester, and it is expected that the students will keep up with the reading material. 2. Weekly assignments are given in the laboratory portion of the course, and the student is required to complete Laboratory Work and Laboratory Reports assignment for each exercise. 3. Homework assignments and Modules are submitted via Connects Plus to Blackboard. 4. Students who do not submit any assignments (lecture or lab) for three consecutive weeks will be considered no long apart of the course and administratively withdrawn from the course. 5. Laboratory Reports will vary in the way they are submitted. Some reports will be submitted via the computer program used, such as Ph.I.L.S, and others will be submitted electronically via e-mail. When submitting via e-mail, the report must be done in Microsoft Word, preferably 2007 or 2010. a. Digital photographs of Laboratory exercises involving microscope work and dissections are required with labels of what is being photographed. b. Digital photographs must include a clear “portrait” of you with your lab specimen that the beginning of the lab, and at points during the lab process. Such portraits are to be full face photos of you, of such clarity that you and the specimen with the structure requested are clearly identifiable. c. Such laboratory reports will not be accepted without the digital images. 6. Each class assignment is to be completed by the stated deadline. Late assignments will NOT be accepted. 7. Remember to keep a copy of everything that you send to me in the event that I do not receive it. B. Page 4 of 13 Participation 1.
