WHERE TO GET KEGS
2 A guy was recently spotted
dropping off a $49.99 keg he
purchased at Isla Vista Market,
939 Embarcadero del Mar. An
employee helping him unload it
noticed it still had beer in it.
“My moron cousins tapped it
wrong, so we thought it was
empty,” the guy complained.
This illustrates a good point —
aside from keeping moron
cousins away from the keg: Be
sure whoever helps you load it
is at least 21. Employees say
police have busted underage
students for minor in
possession just for lifting the
160-pound containers.

when your computer freezes up
at 4 a.m. and your midterm is
due in a few hours? Daxter
Guljé, manager of UCSB’s
residential network services,
offers this insight to such
students: “They’re screwed.”
Service centers at Francisco
Torres, for those in
UCSB-owned off-campus
apartments, and at San Nicolas
Residence Hall, for those in
residence halls, are only open
from noon to 10 p.m. Sunday
through Thursday and noon to
5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
However, we found one outside
service that’s available 24
hours: Mr. Pink Computer
Shrink (966-2966). Rates start
at $60 per hour 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Monday through Friday, $120
per hour after hours and
Saturday and Sunday.
3 Looking for an all-meat
orgy? You can score big time
at Woodstock’s Pizza (928
Embarcadero del Norte, Isla
Vista; 968-6969). Available in
up to 16 inches, this grouping
features everything from
pepperoni to sausage. You can
get a “buy-one, get-one-free”
coupon for it — or any pizza —
by joining the P.I.E. club online
(www.woodstocksiv.com).
Other discounts will be
e-mailed each month.
Woodstock’s delivers late but
Domino’s (968-UCSB) delivers
later — to 3 a.m. Friday and
Saturday.

DELIVERY SERVICE
Pulling an all-nighter? You’re
not alone. Several I.V.
restaurants offer late-night
delivery. For salads, try
Silvergreens (961-1700) from 5
p.m. to midnight daily; for pitas,
Pita Pit (571-PITA) from 8 a.m.
to 2:30 a.m. daily; for burgers,
Déjà Vu (968-8888) from 11 a.m.
to 2 a.m. daily.
Ocean
6
There’s one located
downstairs at the UCen and is
open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday
through Friday, with pick-ups at
4 p.m.; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday (only for incoming
package pick-ups). P.O. boxes
are available; if you get one, tell
Mom and Dad to send mail to it,
not the dorm, because, clerks
say, it often gets lost or, at
least, delayed.
12 Prashant Rajvaidya, a grad
student, like others, heads to
Davidson Library’s reserve book
room. “In my office, there’s so
many distractions,” he said,
working on his thesis inside the
huge space that’s open 24
hours. “I’ve spent nights here.”
It’s not always as quiet as the
eighth floor, but he can drink
coffee here — a necessity for
anybody studying, say, design
and analysis of algorithms (yes,
that’s really a class).
CHEAP MOVIES
HOW TO GET AROUND
Cinema Twin, 6050 Hollister
Ave., Goleta, charges 3 bucks
for all movies. The Associated
Students Program Board offers
the same deal to students at
7:30 and 10 p.m. every Tuesday
at the Isla Vista Theatre, 960
Embarcadero del Norte. The
next Tuesday screening will be
“Supersize Me.” BYOB (Bring
Your Own Burgers).
Ever notice all the nice racks
on campus? That’s because
bikes outnumber cars by about,
oh, 10,000 to 1. Makes it easier
to get around I.V. where
parking is scarce — unless, of
course, your bike is stolen, a
common problem. Kit
Delmarsh, owner of Isla Vista
Bicycle Boutique, recommends
U locks. “Make sure you lock it
to the bike rack. Or else,” he
said, pointing to a
pink-and-white number in his
lot, “buy a girlie-looking bike.”

Quinn, accepting the bogus
award, thanks the diverse
movie selection for keeping this
I.V. business alive while others
have long croaked. Categories
include cult and animation.
Save money by prepaying for
movies. Most popular student
rental? “ ‘Family Guy,’ ” said
Mr. Quinn, clerk. “They can’t
get enough of it.” Awww . . .
maybe they’re homesick.

CHEAP BOOKS
Because you never know

make a photocopy of your . . .
nevermind. The Alternative,
6556 Pardall Road in Isla Vista,
charges 7 cents, self-serve,
and 8 cents, full-serve, for
under 100 copies. But the real
deal is the prepaid “Computer
Savings Card,” which gives
you $25 worth of computer
services there, like Internet
access, for $20.
9 You’ve heard of garage
bands. What about storage-unit
bands? Many groups rent the
spaces at 6522 and 6530
Seville Road in Isla Vista to
practice. But you wouldn’t
know it unless you read the
signs posted on the doors.
BTW: Idiot Savant is
auditioning for a new drummer.
No one, including a musician
spotted there on a recent day,
likes to give up the info. He was
hesitant to say anything, but
he did say this: They do it
because they don’t have to
worry about ticking off their
neighbors and there is a
waiting list.

10 “Friends don’t let friends
drink Starbucks.” That’s what
the sign says on the coffee
maker at Java Jones, 6560
Pardall Road, Isla Vista.
Instead, at this popular
hangout, friends buy friends —
and anyone else they want — a
cup of Java Jones. They can
simply pay for the drink in
advance and it’s noted on the
white board above the register
so the person knows about it
when they come in (BTW Dave,
there’s a double mocha waiting
for you that Pam bought on
Sept. 14).
COMPUTER CRASH
4 Bookmark this: The Isla
Vista Bookstore, 6553 Pardall
Road, buys back books
year-round, so there’s always a
large selection of used books.
Don’t bother buying new —
you save 25 percent on used.
“When they sell the books
back, they’re going to get the
same amount whether it’s new
or used,” added Dan Daly,
general manager. That’s up to
half of the new price. Plus, you
won’t have to take notes since
someone else probably already
did.
8 Robert Lafferry, who sports
nearly full sleeves, is one of
three tattoo artists at Kustom
Ink Tattoo & Body Piercing,
6565 Trigo Road, Isla Vista. But
most clients want piercings,
which start at $30. “If you can
pinch it, our piercer can pierce
it,” he said. The 30-year-old
leaves that job to his girlfriend.
“Some guys, when they get
their ‘other parts’ done, want a
female — which is fine with
me!”

1 The Student Health
building has a basket of them
located on a counter near the
entrance. Although there’s a
limit of one per person, June
Gerrard, a pharmacy assistant
who works nearby the basket,
has seen students take more.
If there aren’t any left, you can
purchase six for $1. A display
case shows the varieties —
from LifeStyles Kiss of Mint to
Trojan Magnum, which, on a
recent day, was noticeably
absent. Was there a run on
these condoms made for, uh,
big boys? “They wish!” said
Ms. Gerrard with a laugh.

CAFETERIA FOOD
You won’t find any
blue-haired ladies serving
mystery meat at the new
Carrillo Dining Commons. “It’s
good food there,” said Vanessa
Mussenden, 18, a sophomore.
“People work there for basically
nothing just so they can eat
there.” She and others
recommend the stir-fry bowls
and pizza.

LAUNDRY LIST
7 You can get sudsed at
several places in Isla Vista. A
popular one is Isla Vista
Laundromat, 948 Embarcadero
del Norte. Fluff & Fold service
(someone else does the dirty
work) is 75 cents per pound.
Wash and dry prices are
comparable to other places, but
if a machine eats your money
here you can get it back by
calling management at
637-9221. The Laundry Basket,
by Albertsons, offers free dry
from 5 p.m. to close Monday
through Thursday with a
two-wash minimum.
SHORTCUTS
You can easily get to I.V. from
campus by cutting across
Ocean Road on foot or by bike
to several of the roads
perpendicular to it (like Pardall
and Madrid) that are closed off
to motor vehicles in that area.
