THRIVE Isla Vista Mission THRIVE Isla Vista works together to ensure young children are healthy, active learners and enter kindergarten school-ready. We provide a pathway of integrated services to families and children, beginning prenatally. Vision We envision a community where all children are healthy, safe and achieve their highest potential in school. Goal Children in Isla Vista demonstrate continued success in cognitive, social, emotional and physical development through 3rd grade. Project Overview THRIVE Isla Vista addresses the needs of children and their families through a comprehensive pathway of integrated services aimed at school readiness. We will build upon our assets and strengthen the services in Isla Vista to help children and families succeed together. 2012 Key Findings THRIVE IV spent six months during 2010-2011 canvassing Isla Vista in order to take a deep, narrow look at our neighborhood and to gain more insight into what is working for families and where gaps in services are. This information was used to develop a comprehensive plan to improve outcomes for children. Health Isla Vista is a geographically isolated community and access to Public Health, mental & dental services is limited Over half of the children screened scored as overweight or obese Education According to the Kindergarten Student Entrance Profile (KSEP) assessments, only 33.3% of children were ‘ready-to-go’ for school. Although Isla Vista has many child care slots for a geographically small community, a significant portion of these slots are in danger due to California’s financial crisis. Family Strengthening Many families and providers report not knowing how to access concrete supports. Core Values Parents are a child’s first teacher Learning takes place in safe and stimulating environments The Children’s Collaborative seeks to build relationships, build leaders, and build upon success. In order to achieve our goals, we will implement specific measurable strategies using a tiered system of care.
