PHYSICS CLUSTER MINUTES October 13, 2015 1:30pm to 3:30pm Lake Worth Campus ITEM 1. What can faculty do to support the four Performance Funding measures (Job Placement/Continuing Education, Completion to 3-4 years, Retention, and Entry Level Wages)? Discussion: Prof. Andric believes that the department chairs in all of the A.S. programs should have access to student transcripts and the PantherWeb to better advise students. The physics cluster was in unanimous agreement. Data/data source: Action: Physics Cluster would like to request access to student transcripts to better advise students. ITEM 2. Review Cluster Minutes Guidelines http://www.palmbeachstate.edu/academicservices/Documents/sectiong.pdf A. Minutes should be prepared and distributed no more than one week after a cluster meeting is held. B. Minutes should be prepared using the standard minutes template located at http://www.palmbeachstate.edu/academicservices/documents/TemplateClusterMinutes. doc. Minutes must address any identified district issues set forth by the VPAA. C. Any cluster recommendations should be in writing and sent to the VPAA in addition to being in the cluster minutes. D. Any curriculum changes (new courses, revised courses, etc.) must be initiated through the established curriculum process (http://www.palmbeachstate.edu/curriculumdevelopment). Discussion: No discussion Data/data source: Action: No action ITEM 3. (SCIENCE CLUSTER ONLY) Reminder to file paperwork to discontinue AST courses (AST1003 and AST1004). Discussion: Prof. O’Brien will submit the appropriate documents to delete these courses. Data/data source: http://www.palmbeachstate.edu/academicservices/Documents/cdf.doc Action: Appropriate documentation to delete AST1003 and AST1004 has been submitted to Kathy Gamble in the office of Academic Services. Item 4. Embedded Assessments: Professor Trupin informed the cluster that there might be a change in the embedded assessments for AST1002 Descriptive Astronomy. Discussion: No other changes in embedded assessments are anticipated and Prof. Trupin will inform us of any changes to AST1002 embedded assessments at the next cluster meeting. Action: No other action was taken at this time. Item 5: Professor Jang-Young Bang proposed to the cluster that he plans to start using Openstax , free online textbooks, for PHY2053. There was no objection by the cluster and this change has been documented in the Physics Cluster textbook list for 2015-2016. Discussion: The cluster agreed that this was an appropriate change. Action: There was no objection and the textbook change has been recorded. Item 6: Should the textbook for PHY2048 be changed from Serway & Jewett 7th ed. to Serway and Jewett 10th ed.? Discussion: The physics professors in the cluster are reluctant to change textbooks at this time. Action: PHY2048 will continue to use Serway & Jewett 7th ed. and the change to 10th edition will be discussed and the next cluster meeting. Item 7: Professor Andric proposed changes to the Engineering Technology Program Discussion: Professor Andric explained to the cluster changes that he has proposed to the Engineering Technology Program. These changes have been well documented and have been submitted to PBSC Curriculum Committee. Action: Professor O’Brien moved that these changes be approved by the cluster. This motion was seconded by Prof. Jordan and was approved unanimously by the Physics Cluster. Other: There was no other business and the meeting was adjourned at 3:30 Attendance: Andrew Trupin, Steven Stemle, Jerry O’Brien, Lilian Jordan, Marie Grasso, Jeffrey Sundquist, Oleg Andric, William Miner, Jang-Young Bang, Roxana Melendez Submitted by: Prof. Jerry O’Brien TEXTBOOK ADOPTIONS for the Academic Year – 2015-2016 Descriptive Astronomy Course Title and Number: Descriptive Astronomy – AST 1002 Current Textbook: Astronomy: A Beginner’s Guide to the Universe by Chaisson & McMillan, 7th Edition, ISBN-10 0321815351 / ISBN-13 978-0-321-815354 Publisher: Addison-Wesley Copyright: September 2012 First Semester for Current Edition: Fall 2012 Last Semester for Current Edition: Unknown Planetary Astronomy Class discontinued by Physics Cluster 3/26/2014 Course Title and Number: Planetary Astronomy – AST 1003 Stellar and Galactic Astronomy Class discontinued by Physics Cluster 3/26/2014 Course Title and Number: Stellar and Galactic Astronomy – AST 1004 Earth Science Course Title and Number: Earth Science – ESC 1000 Current Textbook: Earth Science by Tarbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa, 14th Edition, ISBN-10 (soft cover version): 978-0-321-92809-2 Publisher: Pearson/Prentice Hall Copyright: 2012, 2015 First Semester for Current Edition: Fall 2014 Last Semester for Current Edition: Unknown Earth Science (Study Guide available but not required) Course Title and Number: Earth Science – ESC 1000 Study Guide: Study Guide by Hatfield and Pinzke, 13th Edition, ISBN-10: 0321714857 / ISBN13: 9780321714857 Publisher: Pearson/Prentice Hall Copyright: 2012 First Semester for Current Edition: Fall 2011 Last Semester for Current Edition: Unknown Textbook required in Professor Jeffrey J.
