Until recently, the only way to use these services from home or an offcampus office was to use a UCSDprovided dial-in account for your Internet access. We are happy to announce that there is now a way for you to use our resources from any Internet provider, including high-speed cable modem services. The solution is a proxy server, managed by Academic Computing Services (ACS). By changing one of the settings in your Web browser, your connection to our resources such as online journals and databases will go through this proxy server, which will “authenticate” you with the providers of these resources on the Web. ACS maintains a very helpful Web page with detailed information on how to set up your Web browser to use the proxy. There are instructions for various versions of Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers. ACS Proxy Information: http://www-no.ucsd.edu/documentation/ application/squid/index.html 1 One thing to be aware of: You will need to have your UCSD username and password in order to use the proxy server. Everyone at UCSD has this, but if you have not used a dial-in account or a campus Popmail account, you may not know what it is. If you do not know what your UCSD username and password are or need other proxyrelated assistance, contact the ACS Network Operations unit: Phone: (858) 534-1857 / Fax: (858) 534-1746 E-mail: userserv@ucsd.edu Phone Support Hours: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Walk-in Support Hours: 10:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday thru Friday If you have questions about “content” e.g., online journals or databases, please contact the Biomedical or Medical Center Libraries. We plan to use this newsletter to highlight new and existing resources and services. Currents is available for pickup at the Biomedical and Medical Center Libraries, the Medical Center, Thornton Hospital, Shiley Eye Center and other locations. Call Irene Allison at (858) 534-3255 or e-mail iallison@ucsd.edu if you wish to be added to the mailing list. Currents is also available on the Web at http://scilib.ucsd.edu/bml/library/currents Biomedical Library Renovations New Look at MCL ! Y I ou may have noticed some physical changes and signs of construction at the Biomedical Library. We are in the middle of a library renovation project designed to make our facilities and services more convenient to you and our own operations more efficient. During Fall Quarter the following changes took place: Circulation and reference desks were combined in order to provide more efficient service. Unbound journals were moved to the second floor so that all the journals are now close to the photocopy room. Computer tables and new carpet were installed on the first floor. During Winter Quarter approximately 100 new user seats will be added. Thank you for your patience during our construction and renovation. We are proud of the renovation results so far and hope that you like the end result as much as we do. Clinical Resources Web Site T he UCSD Healthcare Clinical Resources Web site provides an efficient one-stop shop for busy clinicians. The site includes access to UCSD Practice Guidelines, digital textbooks (e.g., Harrison’s Online), Clinical Pharmacology (a full-text drug information resource), Medline/ HealthSTAR, and many other important electronic tools. You may visit the site at: http:// health.ucsd.edu/ClinicalResources/ index.html 2 f you haven’t visited MCL recently, you’re in for a rather pleasant surprise. Over the last several months, MCL has lightened (painted the walls), brightened (installed new lighting), renovated (created a new computer and instructional facility) and installed new carpeting. Please stop by and enjoy it with us!
