AnswersBibleCurriculum.com Why Do We Need the “Old” Testament? by Erik Lutz, AiG-USA (www.answersingenesis.org/articles/2010/08/16/we-need-old-testament) But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:14–15) Scripture is divided into two main sections: the Old Testament and the New Testament—but if we have a “new” one, why do we need the “old” one? The Old Testament is full of rich (and 100 percent reliable) history and is the only true foundation for understanding the world around us. But God’s Word is far more than a history textbook. It’s packed with thousands of vibrant accounts about real people— their failures and successes, disobedience and faithfulness, intense physical and spiritual warfare, and countless choices for good or evil. The apostle Paul warned the Corinthian believers to remember and learn how the Israelites were judged for their idolatry, since “all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition” (1 Corinthians 10:11). In the same way, we should study and learn from the lives of those in the Old Testament. God inspired the writers of the Old Testament, and He guided and orchestrated the events recorded therein—with His people in mind. Every detail God chose to include in Scripture is important, and all of it fits perfectly together to tell the awesome truth of God’s plan to accomplish His marvelous salvation through Christ for fallen humanity. Today’s passage tells us that from a young age, Timothy knew “the Holy Scriptures,” which were capable 4 - God Preserves His Word - Why Do We Need the Old Testament? Junior High • Year 1 • Quarter 1 of making him wise for salvation. At the time Paul wrote this letter to his young protégé, the Holy Scriptures consisted primarily of the books of the Old Testament, which provide us with the historical foundation of the Gospel message expounded in the New Testament (Romans 15:4). As we have discussed in the past several devotionals, Scripture has one consistent message and one central theme. From the first chapters of Genesis, we read of how God created a perfect world but man sinned, which brought a consequence of death—so a Deliverer was promised, the Seed (i.e., offspring) of the woman (Genesis 3:15). This promised Messiah is anticipated throughout the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New Testament in the person of Jesus Christ, who died in our place so that we could be saved. It is crucial for Christians to seek to understand and declare “the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27) because, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction of righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). In order to effectively reach the world with the message of Scripture, we need to diligently study and strive to live out the truth of God’s Word—all of it! Copyright © 2012 Answers in Genesis. AnswersBibleCurriculum.com A Different Gospel Galatians 1:6–9 6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. ISLAM Islam draws its doctrine from the sayings of Mohammed, who supposedly received the messages from the angel Gabriel, as recorded in the Koran. The Koran mentions Jesus as a prophet, but the following is one passage that reveals the Muslim view of who Christ was. Surah 5:17 In blasphemy indeed are those that say that Allah [God] is Christ the son of Mary. Say: “Who then hath the least power against Allah, if His will were to destroy Christ the son of Mary, his mother, and all every-one that is on the earth? For to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between. He createth what He pleaseth. For Allah hath power over all things.” 2 Nephi 25:23 For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do. How does this compare to Ephesians 2:8–9? Is this a different gospel? Is Joseph Smith a true prophet of God? Explain. JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES Witnesses take their doctrine from the writings of Charles Taze Russell and a retranslation of the Bible known as the New World Translation. Today, the Watchtower Society directs the information, and the Witnesses spread the message by distributing The Watchtower magazine door to door. In the writings of this organization we find the following statement about the Resurrection of Jesus: Having given up his flesh for the life of the world, Christ could never take it again and become a man once more. For that basic reason his return could never be in the human body that he sacrificed once for all time. How does the opening statement of this passage compare to Colossian 2:8–10? Is this a different Christ? Is Mohammed a true prophet of God? Explain. MORMONISM Mormonism draws its doctrine from the Bible and also three other books supposedly given to Joseph Smith from God: The Book of Mormon, The Pearl of Great Price, and Doctrine and Covenants. These three works are revered above the Bible since they came directly through Joseph Smith. The following comes from The Book of Mormon as delivered on golden plates by the angel Moroni, translated by Joseph Smith, and recorded by a scribe. 6 - Don't Change God's Word - A Different Gospel Junior High • Year 1 • Quarter 1 How does this statement compare to Luke 24:38–40 and 1 Corinthians 15:1–5? AnswersBibleCurriculum.com Athanasian Creed Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic faith. Which faith except everyone do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. And the catholic faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity, neither confounding the persons, nor dividing the substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Spirit. But the godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, is all one, the glory equal, the majesty co-eternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit. The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, and the Holy Spirit uncreated. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Spirit incomprehensible. The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Spirit eternal. And yet they are not three eternals, but one Eternal. As also there are not three incomprehensibles, nor three uncreated, but one Uncreated, and one Incomprehensible. So likewise the Father is Almighty, the Son Almighty, and the Holy Spirit Almighty. And yet they are not three almighties, but one Almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. And yet they are not three gods, but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Spirit Lord. And yet not three lords, but one Lord. For as we are compelled by the Christian verity to acknowledge each Person by Himself to be both God and Lord, so we are also forbidden by the catholic religion to say that there are three gods or three lords. The Father is made of none, neither created, nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone, not made, nor created, but begotten. The Holy Spirit is of the Father, neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. 10 - The Trinity - Athanasian Creed Junior High • Year 1 • Quarter 1 So there is one Father, not three fathers; one Son, not three sons; one Holy Spirit, not three holy spirits. And in the Trinity none is before or after another; none is greater or less than another, but all three Persons are co-eternal together and co-equal. So that in all things, as is aforesaid, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshipped. He therefore that will be saved must think thus of the Trinity. Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believe rightly the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the right faith is, that we believe and confess, that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and man; God, of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; and man of the substance of his mother, born in the world; perfect God and perfect man, of a rational soul and human flesh subsisting. Equal to the Father, as touching His godhead; and inferior to the Father, as touching His manhood; who, although He is God and man, yet he is not two, but one Christ; one, not by conversion of the godhead into flesh but by taking of the manhood into God; one altogether; not by confusion of substance, but by unity of person. For as the rational soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one Christ; who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead. He ascended into heaven, He sits at the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence He will come to judge the quick and the dead. At His coming all men will rise again with their bodies and shall give account for their own works. And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil into everlasting fire. This is the catholic faith, which except a man believe faithfully, he cannot be saved. True—The idea that there is no such thing as absolute truth must be absolutely true or it is false, so the argument is self-refuting. The Bible gives us a source of absolute truth. 2. True—In John 14:6, Jesus Himself said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Acts 4:12 also carries this same idea. 3. True—Since the Bible is from the only eyewitness to the whole of history, it contains the only accurate history of the universe. The Bible references its historical nature many times (Genesis 5:1; 2 Peter 1:16; etc.) and has been confirmed by many archaeological findings. 4. False—Since the Bible makes it clear that life begins at fertilization, any abortion is an act of murder—a clear sin. Psalm 51:5–6, Luke 1:41, and many other passages confirm this idea. There are surely tragic medical situations when one life or the other will be lost, but those cases are rare and should not be considered an abortion in the sense it is typically referred to. 5. False—Genesis is abundantly clear that God formed Adam from the dust (Genesis 2:7) and Eve from his side (Genesis 2:21–22), so there is absolutely no room in the text to allow for an evolutionary process. 2:8–9; Romans 3). Those in the Old Testament were looking forward to a Savior who would come and remove their sins. Today, we look back to the Savior that has already died for our sins. In either sense, sins are forgiven through the work of Christ on the Cross and sealed by His Resurrection and ascension to the right hand of the Father. 8. False—There is no biblical prohibition of marriage between different people groups. Since all people are descendants of Adam through Noah, there is no biblical reason to bar such marriages. Paul describes all people as coming from one blood in Acts 17:26. The only marriage that is condemned is that between a Christian and an unbeliever (1 Corinthians 7:39; 2 Corinthians 6:14). 9. True—God’s original creation was very good (Genesis 1:31) and did not include death of any kind. All death was ushered in as a result of Adam’s sin and the Curse (Romans 5, 8). 10. False—If an outside evidence could prove the Bible is true, that evidence would be a greater standard than the Bible itself. That idea is rejected since the Bible is the very Word of God. The Bible must always be the ultimate standard. We might say that evidences “confirm” or “support” the truths of the Bible, but they cannot prove the Bible. 6. False—There has been no change in the character of God—ever! (Malachi 3:6; James 1:17) This is a common misrepresentation of a soft Jesus and a harsh Father. Understanding the roles within the Trinity and reading the many harsh words from Jesus, the One who will be the coming Judge, will correct this misunderstanding. God has always been both merciful and just. 11. True—Since dinosaurs were land-dwelling, airbreathing animals, and Noah took representatives of all of the land animals on the Ark, dinosaurs must have been on the Ark (Genesis 7:14). 7. False—The sacrificial system was never established to provide forgiveness of sins, but to cover over the sins (Hebrews 10) until the Perfect Lamb would come to be the final offering to take away the sins of the world. No one has ever been saved from their sins by their own good works (Ephesians Part 2: Answers will vary by student. True—All wisdom comes from God and the Bible contains the words of God (2 Peter 1:2–4 and 2 Timothy 3:14–17). The Bible does indeed have guidance for every situation that an individual might face.
