ASK CINCO MATH Common Questions regarding High School Mathematics Curriculum Update 2015-16 • Why are there changes to the High School Math program this year? In 2012, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) approved new standards for Mathematics K-12. These standards are called the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills or TEKS. The revised high school math TEKS will be implemented in all Texas public schools this school year (2015-2016). Which courses are affected by the changes to the TEKS? The math courses that are affected by the changes to the TEKS are Algebra 1, Geometry, Math Models with Applications (MMA), Algebra 2, and Pre-Calculus. The changes affect both the Academic and the PreAP/GT courses. Where can I find the revised (new) TEKS? (Make sure to look at the TEKS adopted in 2012.) The revised TEKS are on the TEA website or via the QR code: http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/rules/tac/chapter111/index.html. Where can I find the Katy ISD math curriculum for the 2015-2016 school year? The curriculum can be found on the following website or via the QR code: https://katyisd.instructure.com/courses/46575/pages/math-courses. • How has the Katy ISD math curriculum changed? The Katy ISD math curriculum is based on the standards set forth by TEA. The Katy ISD math curriculum for the 2015-2016 school year has been revised for Algebra 1, Geometry, Math Models with Applications, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calculus to reflect the changes to the TEKS for each course. For more information on the changes to curriculum, the state has provided a side-by-side document that compares the new and the old TEKS. This document can be found on the following website or via the QR code: http://www.projectsharetexas.org/resource/revised-mathematics-teks-side-side-tekscomparison?keys=math%20teks%20side%20by%20side 9/9/2015 • What textbook resources will be available for Katy ISD students? Due to changes in TEKS, new resources have been adopted for the following courses: Algebra 1: Each student will be issued an interactive textbook (consumable) and access to the online textbook. Title: Texas Algebra 1, 2016 Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Geometry: Each student will have access to a hard cover textbook and access to the online textbook. Students will also have access to an addition resource that is consumable. Title: Texas Geometry, 2016 Publisher: McGraw Hill Math Models with Applications: Each student will have access to a class set and the online textbook. Title: Texas Math Models with Applications, 2016 Publisher: Pearson Algebra 2: Each student will be issued an interactive textbook (consumable) and access to the online textbook. Title: Texas Algebra 2, 2016 Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Pre-Calculus: Each student will be issued a hard cover textbook and access to the online textbook. Title: Texas Pre-Calculus, 2016 Publisher: McGraw Hill What is the difference between an interactive textbook and the traditional hard cover textbook? The interactive textbook is the textbook for the course. The main differences between an interactive textbook and a traditional textbook is that students have the opportunity to write and take notes inside the textbook. At the completion of the school year, the consumable book will belong to the student. How are online textbooks accessed? MyKaty Cloud is a web portal that provides Katy ISD staff and students with a single sign-on location to access district applications and educational resources—including textbooks. Textbooks should be accessed the through this portal. Then, only for Geometry and Pre-Calculus, after initially accessing through MyKaty Cloud, the student will access the online textbook via Canvas. What other features exist online? Through accessing their online textbooks, the students will find many helpful resources such as study quizzes, tutorial videos, study guides, etc. How was my child’s teacher prepared for these changes? Katy ISD has been preparing for these changes the past couple of years. Teachers and Instructional Coaches were trained in the new TEKS, any potential gaps in curriculum during the transition and the new Textbooks. The District is also providing teachers assessment questions to ensure the TEKS are being learned by the students. How will classroom teaching be impacted by these changes? The new Texas TEKS are to designed to help prepare students for today’s world—one in which they need to be problem solvers. Teachers will be providing students even more opportunities to communicate, make choices on which tools to use and think. The teachers at Cinco have embraced this approach and you will see a less traditional classroom—one where more communication is occurring between students and from students to teachers AND one where teachers are listening more to help facilitate versus directing.
