Katy ISD Guiding Principles for
Math Instruction

Math classrooms have a learning environment that is
challenging and supportive.

Math concepts are connected through the use of multiple
representations which develop understanding and the
ability to solve problems.

Learned concepts are demonstrated and communicated
daily both orally and in writing.
Changes to the
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
 The
Texas Education Agency approved new
standards for Mathematics in 2012.
 The
revised High School math TEKS will be
implemented this school year. (2015-2016)
 Cinco
Ranch Math Team is excited and prepared to
embark on this new path as we prepare students to
be even better problem solvers!!

Katy ISD Math Curriculum Changes

The Katy ISD Math curriculum is based on the standards
set forth by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

The Katy ISD curriculum has been revised for Algebra 1,
Geometry, Math Models with Applications, Algebra 2, and
Pre-Calculus to reflect the changes to the TEKS in each
course.

Textbooks – Algebra 1 & Algebra 2

New Resources for Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 have been Adopted.

Each student in Algebra 1 or Algebra 2 will have access to an
interactive Textbook and an online textbook.
The advantages to having an interactive textbook is
that students have the opportunity to take notes and
write in the textbook.


New Resources for Geometry have been Adopted.

Every Geometry Student will have access to a hardcover textbook
with an additional interactive resource and access to the online
textbook.

New Resources for Pre-Calculus have been Adopted.

Every Pre-Calculus Student will have access to a hardcover
textbook and access to the online textbook.


New Resources for Math Models with Applications have been
Adopted.

Every Student in Math Models with Applications will have access
to a Class set of books and access to the online textbook.

How to help your child in Math

Discuss how they are doing in mathematics with them on a
regular basis.

Ask them to show you how problems are solved.

Encourage them to try working problems without using
their notes as quickly as possible.

Have them put forth an effort on each problem and
attend tutorials to get closure and extra practice in the
areas they are struggling.

REMEMBER—making mistakes and correcting them is part
of the learning process—encourage them to embrace
mistakes as part of learning!!

Peer Tutoring--Mu Alpha Theta every Wednesday
after school

Teachers are aware and using pre-assessments to
monitor any gaps in curriculum that have
occurred due to the changing TEKS.

Reassessment is available for major grades—
specific Retesting Procedures are provided by
classroom teachers.
