February 2013 President’s Message In this issue: President’s Message…….1 Dear Baltimore Chapter Members, Chapter News..................2 I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Membership Update........3 CAP Reporting………....4 Events Schedule…….…..5 CIA Candidates……..….6 Leadership Directory…..8 To recap on the past several months’ activities, the chapter held a CAE Roundtable at Protiviti’s Baltimore office in November followed by our Fall Social Event sponsored by ClearView Consulting. Our January meeting topic was on SOC 1 & 2/ Vendor Management presented by Grant Thornton and Corporate Governance lead by PWC’s Center for Board Governance. In February, Protiviti led our Hot Topics in IT Audit meeting with sessions on IT Governance, and Emerging Security Threats and Bring Your Own Device followed by Red Owl Analytics who presented on Big Data and PWC who spoke on Business Continuity. All of these were well attended and successful sessions. Thanks to all of the firms who provided speakers and sponsorship for our events. We have many training and networking opportunities for our chapter members scheduled for the remainder of 2013 starting in March so please see our chapter website for upcoming event. One of the combined events, which I am very excited about, is our April Meeting and Spring Social. At our last Board meeting, which occurred last week, The Leadership Team agreed to subsidize majority of the session as a gift back to our chapter members. The session is scheduled for April 17th at Rusty Scupper in Baltimore and the topic will be a CAE and Audit Committee Panel discussion on Internal Audit Best Practices and will be followed by our Spring Social which is sponsored by Clifton Larsen Allen. More details on this and other sessions throughout the remainder of the year are posted on the events section of our chapter website. I’d like to move our attention to a Committee of the Board that was established a few years ago to provide service to those in need within the Baltimore community, the Community Service Committee. This committee was established by the Board to provide opportunities for members to give back to the community by planning and organizing activities in which they can participate. Since being established we have held events with organizations like Maryland Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity in addition to coordinating food drives for Maryland Food Bank. Unfortunately, we do not receive the best attendance for these events so I am soliciting feedback from the Chapter to let us know if there are any NFOs that could use a helping hand. Please contact me with your recommendations so I can share with our Community Service Committee to plan events that would be meaningful to the Chapter as a whole. As a follow up from last newsletter, we continue to looking for volunteers for leadership roles at the Board, Executive Committee and Committee Chair levels so if you are interested in taking on one of these roles, please send me a message and we will do our best to get you involved. Best Regards, Nick Chavis -- President, IIA Baltimore Chapter | 410-241-4765 | Nicholas.Chavis@gmail.com Chapter News Board Meeting This year chapter board meetings will be held from 8am-11am. Certified professionals have more job opportunities, gain more confidence and competence in their skills and job performance, and, according to The IIA, increase their earning potential up to 18% more than their non-certified peers. Being driven to master a certification while balancing professional and personal responsibilities shows your commitment to your career. It will demonstrate to your supervisors the determination that you possess-- not to mention the new skills you attain and refine-- to advance your current position and status. Your hard work and effort will not go unnoticed by your employer and colleagues. Becoming a CIA demonstrates that you have the knowledge, skills, and abilities that an internal audit professional uses on the job today. Meeting your continuing education requirements each year demonstrates your commitment to the profession and your continuing professional development. Once certified, take the time to encourage and mentor other chapter members, colleagues, or even students who are potential CIA candidates. It is a rewarding experience to see others achieve success.
