DISTRICT 9
• The story, adapted from Alive in Joburg, a 2005 short film directed by
Blomkamp and produced by Sharlto Copley and Simon Hansen, pivots
on the motifs of humanity, xenophobia and social segregation. The title
and premise of District 9 were inspired by events that took place in
District Six of Cape Town during the apartheid era.
• Plot: In 1982, a large alien spacecraft stops directly above Johannesburg.
An investigation team enters the ship, discovering a population of sick
and malnourished extraterrestrials. The aliens, derogatorily referred to as
“prawns” are confined to District 9, a government camp just outside
Johannesburg. Periodic unrest then occurs between the aliens and the
locals and subsequently the South African government hires
Multinational United (MNU), to relocate the aliens to a new internment
camp.

Apartheid Wall: The Israeli West Bank barrier is a separation barrier under
construction by the State of Israel along and within the West Bank.
•Israel argues that the barrier is necessary to protect Israeli civilians from
Palestinian terrorism, including the suicide bombing attacks that increased
significantly during the Second Intifada.
•Israelis most commonly refer to the barrier as the "separation (hafrada) fence" and
"security fence" or "anti-terrorist fence", with "seam zone" referring to the land
between the fence and the 1949 armistice lines.
•Palestinians most commonly refer to the barrier as racial segregation wall, and
some opponents of the barrier refer to it in English as the "Apartheid Wall."

Racial discrimination: discriminatory or abusive behavior towards
members of another race, unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis
of prejudice
Racial profiling: a form of racism consisting of the (alleged) policy of
policemen who stop and search vehicles driven by persons belonging to
particular racial groups
Racial segregation: the practice of restricting people to certain circumscribed
areas of residence or to separate institutions (e.g., schools, churches) and
facilities (parks, playgrounds, restaurants, restrooms) on the basis of race or
alleged race. Racial segregation provides a means of maintaining the
economic advantages and superior social status of the politically dominant
group, and in recent times it has been employed primarily by white
populations to maintain their ascendancy over other groups by means of
legal and social colour bars.
