Please note the following information regarding an elearning session on Accessibility for Ontarians with
Disabilities Act (AODA). The University is offering this course as part of its responsibilities under the
Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. It is a condition of your employment and you are
expected to complete it by August 1, 2011. I took this course when it was first introduced and it takes
about one hour to complete.
In 2005 the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) became law. Ontario is the first
Canadian jurisdiction to recognize that a complaint-based system is not an effective way to address
disability and pass legislation aimed at requiring service providers and employers to move toward a
regime of universal accessibility for persons with disabilities.
The Customer Service Standard is the first of five regulations to be passed into law. Under its provisions,
the University is required to orient employees and volunteers on the provision of accessible services.
The University is obligated to report to the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services on the
implementation of this regulation. The University welcomes this opportunity to participate in efforts
toward making Ontario an even better place for persons with disabilities to live, learn and work.
