1 Springhouse Middle School Club Descriptions 2013-2014 24 Challenge & Math Games Are you good with numbers? Join this club and have fun solving Soduko and Kakuro puzzles. We will also play different versions of 24 Challenge including fractions, decimals, and exponents. Cartooning/Drawing Have fun drawing popular cartoon and comic characters or draw your own cartoon creations. Many packets, books, and hand-outs are available to help you with the “how to.” Learn the “Blitz” method for drawing cartoon animals. Battle Basketball Come join in one of your favorite Physical education activities! Students must wear sneakers to participate. Cheer Club This club is open to any student who is interested in the sport of cheerleading. We will go over stretching and motion drills, as well as dances, cheers and charts. You may sign up if you are a cheerleader or if you want to be! Hope to see you in clubs! Bloopers Who says school can’t be fun? Join the Bloopers Club and you will be laughing every club day. You will see animal bloopers, sports bloopers, and various other bloopers. So remember, if you want a good laugh, join the Bloopers Club! Board Games With so many new and exciting games out there, who has time to play them all? Participants will have a chance to try a new game every week. Boggle Boggle your mind! Wake up your brain on club days by playing the best word game ever invented. Weekly prizes will go to the best Boggler each club period. Even if you never played, give Boggle a try. It’s fun! Brain Exercise Riddles, mazes, word searches, and trivia galore! You don’t want to miss this one ☺ Card Games Come and enjoy a few hands of your favorite card games! Members will have the opportunity to practice games they love and learn new favorites too. Chess Club Come learn and play chess in a positive and relaxed environment. All students are welcome from novice to advanced players. Comic Book Club Love comic books? Can't get enough Superman, Batman, and Wolverine? Come in and spend some time reading your favorite comics while meeting others that share your interests. Bring in your own comic books to trade, or just come in and read. Computer Games and More…. This club is for students who want to play approved computer games (CoolMath, FunBrain, FunSchool, BrainPop and more) and/or work on Study Island and other school-related computer projects. Crossword Puzzles If you love words, puzzles and games, this club is for you. Each week will feature two new crossword puzzles to choose from. So let’s get your game on! We will do a wide variety of puzzles for all areas of interest. 2 Digital Memories Club Looking for a great way to display your pictures rather than on paper? The Digital Memories Club gives students the opportunity to make a digital slide show of their pictures. It is a great way for students to create a take home project that includes music and digital effects to help enhance their photos. Everyday Crafts Take everyday items and turn them into something extraordinary. In this club, we’ll use common items to create gifts and decorations for yourself, your friends, and your family! Food Facts Come enjoy food programs that will teach and entertain you about recipes and exciting foods. Iron Chef, Chopped, Good Eats, and Bizarre Foods… just to name a few. Football Interested in playing football? This club will help you improve your skills. You will review plays, watch films, and participate in activities to promote football at the middle school level. Future K Club The Future K Club is a year-long community service club. Students who join this club will work together to build relationships with the community by volunteer work, fundraisers and community involvement. The objectives of our club are to provide opportunities to work together in service to school and community, to develop leadership potential, to foster the development of strong moral character and to encourage loyalty to school, community and nation. We are looking forward to a great year with the Future K Club students! Friendship Bracelets Sign up for this cool club to make funky bracelets to either keep or give to a friend! Pick from a variety of colors and styles. Games & Music Have a blast playing your favorite games with your friends while listening to your iPod or MP3. Gardens & Games Something is always growing in Springhouse’s newest club. If you have an interest in developing, planning, or designing landscapes this is the club for you! In addition to landscaping, this club will also focus on gardening. Learn how to possess the most beautiful and lush garden on your block. During the winter months we will play games indoors. Hats Off for Charities We will be creating hats and scarves to donate to various local charities in need. Join in!!!! History Channel Club Come explore the many halls of history with the History Channel Club. We will enjoy videos and discussion from some of the History Channel’s best documentary and program videos, including: feats of engineering, civilization building, and the epic battles of history’s greatest ancient peoples. History’s Mysteries Ever wonder who really built Stonehenge? Was King Tut clobbered on the head or did he die from some nasty disease? Is there really a curse of the mummy? If you’re a history fan, join us for some energizing discussions after we watch episodes from the History Channel’s Digging for the Truth. We’ll explore the mysteries of pyramids, mummies, Vikings, and entire civilizations that simply disappeared. Homework/Study Club – Need more time to work on homework, projects, or to study? Join us at the homework club…a quiet place to focus on all the schoolwork that you might want to do instead of having to do it at home. Jazz Band Major Club (Full Year) The Jazz Band Major Club is a yearlong club that is only available to members of Jazz Band Major. Students may sign up 1, 2, or 3 trimesters. The club will learn how to improvise and rehearse performance music. Jazz Band Major is an auditioned group. Journaling Are you looking for a creative way to express yourself? Do you enjoy creating stories, writing poetry, or journaling? If so, jump WRITE into The Journaling Club! You will have the opportunity to create poems, journals, stories, acronyms, and/or songs. You may choose to work on your own writing pieces or participate in guided activities. Lasso Golf Play the newest lawn game out there. Similar to golf and horseshoes, lasso golf is a fun game to learn and play with family and friends. Library Club Come and join our newest and coolest club! Learn about how your SMS library operates on a daily basis. Be a part of planning and organizing activities, including ARP contests! Assist with maintaining the Library’s website, bulletin board, and display case. Earn 25 ARP points for your hard work! Loom Bracelets Club Design and create creative bracelets and rings using colorful rubber bands. Loom not necessary but encouraged! Looney Tunes Students will view classic videos from Looney Tunes featuring Bugs Bunny and friends. Students will learn about the creation of the cartoons and discuss historical references in the cartoons. Math Peer Tutor Club (Full Year) Do you have an interest in math? Do you like helping others? Do other kids always ask you for help? If you are a student currently enrolled in Algebra 1, 2 or Geometry and have maintained at least a 90% in previous math classes, you are invited to be a math tutor for fellow classmates. Students enrolled in this club should have an interest in math and/or education. They will be shown various ways to help others in mathematics and will then be placed on a tutor list for others to get help from, including club, activity period, and flex time. This is also a great way to get volunteer hours and help those around you! 3 Middle School Matters: Take a Stand! (Full Year) Do you feel strongly about wanting to make the right choices? Do you want to have a positive impact in your school and community? Do you want your voice to be heard? If you are looking to step outside of the crowd but are sometimes worried about how your peers will react, then this student driven club is for you!! You are invited to join us as we take a stand (together!) against heavy issues that teenagers face – matters such as bullying, drugs and alcohol, destructive decisions, etc. Join us as we unite in round-table discussions that will prepare you to combat peer pressure and reassure you that it is okay to stay true to what is right! Be confident in the positive choices you make! Stand up to prevalent middle school matters! Music Discovery Club Music Discovery Club is about broadening students’ awareness of the different types of music in society. Students will be allowed to share appropriate music with each other and discuss the positives and negatives of each genre. Mythbusters Did you ever watch the Discovery Channel’s show “Mythbusters?” If not, now you have the chance to do so. Each week we will watch a new episode of Mythbusters to confirm or dispel the myths of science. Needlepoint Club Students will create their own bookmark or keychain using plastic canvas and yarn. No experience necessary. See you there! Newspaper Club The Timberwolves Newspaper Club is designed to give staff writers, photographers, and artists time to complete their assignments and to help with production of the school newspaper. Only members of the newspaper staff should choose this club (see Ms. Reinhard if you are uncertain). This club meets the first and third trimesters when the two issues are being produced. Newspaper Editors Club – Full Year Editors for The Timberwolves school newspaper must select this club for the full year. 4 Sign Language B If you already know the alphabet and numbers but would like to learn more conversational sign language, then this club is for you! Peanuts! Celebrate the classic cartoon series with Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the gang! We’ll watch seasonal specials, read classic comics, and do coloring of Peanuts themed art! Sports Zone If you love sports, this club is for you. Club members will participate in various outdoor sports, such as football, basketball, and ultimate Frisbee, weather permitting. Planet Earth Did you catch the Planet Earth series on the Discovery Channel? If not, here is your chance! Episodes feature pole to pole, mountains, deep oceans, deserts, ice worlds, caves, Great Plains, jungles, fresh water, seasonal forests, and a look at the future of the planet. Sudoku and Math Games In Japan, they don’t do crossword puzzles, they do Sudoku instead. Sudoku, in Japanese, means “number place”. You have to fit every digit from 1-9, in any order, into each row (left to right), each column (top to bottom), and each box (of nine squares). Play games like this and other fun math puzzles. Reading Club If you enjoy a good book, this club is for you. We all will read the same book and discuss it over treats ☺ Relaxation Club Just relax! Students in this club will learn relaxation techniques and participate in stressrelieving activities such as yoga, listening to music, playing games, and doing art projects. SADD-Students Against Destructive Decisions The purpose of this club is to promote healthy decisions and share positive decision making with the school community. No longer is SADD just about underage drinking, it includes other destructive decisions for students. Scattergories Come join the fun in the Scattergories Club! Members will play the popular game Scattergories while enjoying an afternoon snack. Scattergories is a word game of categories where all of your answers have to begin with the same letter. If you have a creative mind and enjoy games, this is the club for you! Sign Language A This is a great opportunity to learn the basics of sign language – letters, numbers, and common phrases. We will also learn about facial expression and how to use it when you sign. Tackling the S.A.T. Are you SAT ready? The SAT is the Scholastic Aptitude Test. It is the United States's most widely used college admission test. The SAT math test is comprised of Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry concepts. The SAT critical reading is designed to test your ability to read and understand written English of the level you need to make the most of a college-level course. In this Club, you will take an actual released SAT from the College Board. We will score the test and learn strategies to ace the SAT while you are still in middle school! Teacher Helper Club Do you love hanging posters? How about helping to organize files? What about delivering things around the school? Sign up for this club and help the teachers complete their classroom jobs! Twilight Zone You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension . . .a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into the Twilight Zone. Watch episodes of the classic TV series in this club. 5 TV Studio: SUNN TV (Full Year) This club is open only to students who have applied and been accepted as members of the TV Studio Staff. This is a full year club. You do not have to choose this as your club if you are part of TV Studio. See Mrs. Manmiller or Ms. Brown if you have any questions. Walking Club Want to get outside and enjoy some fresh air? Join the walking club! Students will have an opportunity to walk on campus, listen to their iPod or chat with friends while getting a quick, fun workout! Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring your music. Weightlifting Learn the importance of fitness through weight training and nutrition. As part of this club, you will have the opportunity to develop a personalized workout routine. Wire Jewelry Club Do you like to make jewelry, or would you like to learn how? As a group, we will decide whether we would like to make woven bead necklaces, wire worked earrings, hammered wire pieces, or some other piece of jewelry. Members of the club will be able to share special techniques they know with the group, as well as bring in jewelry they have made in the past. Yearbook (Full Year) – Yearbook Staff Only Members of yearbook staff will take part in helping to create the SMS Yearbook. Learn how the yearbook is put together from the very start to the published book in June. You will learn how to create a yearbook from start to finish.
