Rationale for the Course:
This course gives students an introduction to both Office 2010 software as
well as basic computer concepts.
Course Description:
This course is an introduction to computer concepts and application
software. Topics include computer history and fundamentals, operating
systems, computer hardware, privacy, security, using application software
as productivity tools, and working with Windows 7and Microsoft Office
2010 software.
Prerequisites:
None - This is an entry level course.
Required Materials:
Textbook Packet will include: Physical book, required student access
code to Pearson website (includes eBook and MyITLab software), and
180-day trial version of Microsoft Office 2010.
The Book Packet may be purchased at any of our college bookstores located
on our three campuses or at the University Bookstore on Highway 544 in
Conway.
Please note: If you are on Financial Aid and wish to use your aid to
purchase the textbook, you must purchase the textbook at one of the HGTC
College bookstores located on our campuses.

Technical Requirements:
Software needed is installed on Campus computers in the classroom, at the
Campus Libraries, at the SSTC (Student Success and Technology Center)
and at the testing centers. If you are taking CPT 101 in-class (not online),
we create and take care of the computer environment on the HorryGeorgetown Technical College Campus. Students are responsible for
installing the software at home (if the student chooses to work at home
additionally). If the student has any issues, the student needs to call
Technical Support for MyITLab which can be located on the main MyITLab
webpage, or by visiting the following URL:

All assignments are due by the due date and time, no exceptions.
Student must schedule time on campus in a computer lab to complete
assignments until the student home computer is working properly for
CPT 101 usage.

All tests/exams will be evaluated using MyITLab Assessment software.

The basic computer concepts tests will be open-book and notes. The test will be
comprised of multiple-choice questions.

The lab tests (Word, Excel, & Access) and final exams (Word & Excel) will be
hands-on activities.

Online students will take all tests in one of the college’s testing centers.
The final exam may not be exempted.

Grading System
HGTC has a standardized grading scale for academic courses. The grading scale is:
A: 90-100
B: 80-89
C: 70-79
D: 60-69
F: Below 60
A different grading scale may exist in some academic programs. Refer to the College Catalog for specific
information.
Grade reports showing scholastic marks attained by the student are available at the end of each semester. The
following grades are used:
A ---- EXCELLENT: used in GPA calculations; carries a value of 4 quality points and earns credit hours.
B ---- ABOVE AVERAGE: used in GPA calculations; carries a value of 3 quality points and earns credit hours.
C ---- AVERAGE: used in GPA calculations; carries a value of 2 quality points and earns credit hours.
D ---- BELOW AVERAGE: used in GPA calculations; carries a value of 1 quality point and earns credit hours.
F----- FAILURE: used in GPA calculations; carries a value of 0 quality points and earns 0 credit hours.
(Hours attempted are used in GPA calculations.)
I ----- INCOMPLETE: does not affect GPA calculations; defaults to “F” automatically after one term if the
incomplete work has not been completed and generates 0 quality points and 0 credit hours.
WF -- WITHDREW FAILING: used in GPA calculations; carries a value of 0 quality points and earns 0 credit
hours. (Hours attempted are used in GPA calculations.)
W --- WITHDRAW: not used in GPA calculations; carries a value of 0 quality points and earns 0 credit hours.

TR--- TRANSFER: not used in GPA calculations; earns credit hours; generates no grade points. A “TR” is
given for allowable equivalent credits earned at other accredited colleges, universities or technical
colleges. All “TR” grades must be supported by an official transcript of record from an accredited
postsecondary institution.
E ---- EXEMPT: not used in GPA calculations; earns credit hours; generates no grade points. An “E” is
awarded for HGTC courses which students have been permitted to exempt as a result of testing,
articulation, equivalent work experience or other educational experience.
AU -- AUDIT: not used in GPA calculations; carries a value of 0 quality points and earns 0 credit hours.

Incomplete
A grade of Incomplete (“I”) is given when the student does not complete his/her work or take the final
exam due to illness or for other reasons over which the student has no control. This grade is given only
with the approval of the professor involved. An incomplete must be removed by the end of the following
term. Otherwise, grade becomes an automatic Failure (“F”).

Grades earned in courses impact academic progression and financial aid status. Before
withdrawing from a course, be sure to talk with your instructor and financial aid counselor
about the implications of that course of action. Ds, Fs, Ws, WFs and Is also negatively impact
academic progression and financial aid status.
The Add/Drop Period is the first 5 days of the semester for full term classes. Add/Drop periods
are shorter for accelerated format courses. The following week of the semester is Financial Aid
Attendance Verification period. You must attend at least one meeting of all of your classes
during that period. If you do not, you will be dropped from the course(s) and your Financial Aid
will be reduced accordingly.

Your Commitment
Success in this course requires a serious commitment on your part. You must be committed to
attending each and every class. You must be committed to coming to class with your homework,
reading material covered in class, and be prepared and to be attentive in class. You must be
committed to seeking help with your work if you find yourself having difficulty. The opportunity for
success is available to you, and you must be committed to taking advantage of this opportunity.
Departmental Rules
In compliance with college policy, there is to be absolutely no eating or drinking in the computer
labs on the Conway, Georgetown, or Grand Strand Campuses.
Professors will not accept “Extra Credit work nor should students ask a professor to make “Extra
Credit” assignments. Students should not expect that grades for any exam, quiz, assignment, or final
exam to be “curved”. Professors in the Department do not curve grades.
Your professor will not accept any assignment turned in past the due date and time. No late
assignments will be accepted.
In the majority of courses in the Department, students are expected to complete lab assignments
outside of class unless directed by the professor. Class time is reserved for instructional purposes
only.
Students are prohibited from copying software from the college computers. Anyone found copying
copyrighted software will be disciplined through the Vice President for Student Affairs. Do not load
personal software of any type on the computers in the labs including games or entertainment
software. Systems are purged frequently of data files or unauthorized software.
Users of the computers and network services, including Internet access, provided by the college are
subject to monitoring. If a student deliberately disrupts monitoring, such as powering off a computer,
the student will be asked to leave and will be charged with an absence. Users shall abide by the
procedures and policies set forth by the College regulating information system use. Acceptable use is
always ethical, reflects honesty, and shows restraint in the consumption of shared resources. If you
are not sure whether or not what you are doing is allowed, ask your professor prior to doing it.
Only college computers will be used in the classrooms.
Cell phones, beepers, pagers, and other electronic devices will be turned off prior to coming into class.
If any device goes off during class, or is used during class, the student will be asked to leave
and will be charged with an absence. No excuses. If there are any questions, ask.
Turn off your computer when you leave the classroom. Your professor will show you the correct
procedure.
Student Conduct
To ensure a positive learning environment for all students, the Department follows the Code of
Conduct as outlined in the College Catalog. In accordance with the Code, the Department expects
students to:

Show respect for others. (Give complete attention and listen while others are talking, avoid arguing
with instructors and classmates, avoid confrontation with others during classroom discussions,
respect the opinions of others, keep conversations and questions focused on relevant course issues,
avoid threatening behavior toward students and professors, use appropriate language, turn off
electronic devices such as cell phones and pagers while in class.)
Engage in classroom activities. (Avoid sleeping, actively participate, avoid doing personal work or
other class assignments, and exhibit a positive attitude and interest in the class, and use personal
computers for note taking only.)
Exhibit respect for College property. (Use equipment with care, avoid eating and drinking in
classroom where prohibited, keep desk area neat and clean, be in classrooms at the start of class, and
stay until class is over.)
Take ownership and responsibility for one’s learning. (Complete assignments, be prepared to
participate in learning, put forth effort to learn, ask questions, take responsibility for one’s own
actions, and maintain scholastic honesty.)
Show respect for authority. (Exhibit cooperation with the professor, avoid comments that show
disrespect for the professor and their knowledge, select appropriate times to inquire about academic
performance which may be outside the classroom, complete assignments on time and as directed by
professor, address professors as Professor, Mr., or Mrs.—not by his/her first or last name.)
Consequences for not following these guidelines are listed in the Code of Conduct in the College
Catalog.
Attendance
For In-class Students Only
A student at Horry-Georgetown Technical College is responsible for all course work and all assignments
made in each class. Therefore, he/she is expected to attend regularly and promptly each class meeting in
which he/she is enrolled. Students should limit absences to those that are unavoidable. An absence is
defined as nonattendance for any reason, including illness, emergency, or official leave. Due to the
nature of the classes taught and the difficulty in making up missed assignments, the Department strongly
encourages all students to attend every class.
The Department maintains a general attendance policy requiring students to be present for a minimum of
90% of classes in order to receive credit. For classes meeting three (3) days per week, five (5) absences
are allowed. For a class meeting twice a week, three (3) absences are allowed. Absences are counted
from the first day of class. Students are responsible for all work missed. Students exceeding the
absence limit will be withdrawn from the course with a grade of "W" or "WF," depending on the grade
average at the time of withdrawal.
For On-line Students Only
Initial Communications and Drop/Add: An email is required from each student to the professor by
the end of Drop/Add period (normally one week after the course starts). If the end of Drop/Add
period falls on a Friday, students will have until the following Monday at 5pm to email their
professor. At that time the professor will initiate a withdrawal for each student who has failed to
send this email and the student will be dropped.

Attendance Policy: Students are expected to communicate with the professor frequently.
Attendance in an Internet course is defined as electronic communications with a professor. After
the Drop/Add period each student will be expected to communicate with the professor a
minimum of once a week, via email, phone, discussion, participation, or chat. Each professor
reserves the right to stipulate how this communication is to take place and how often it is to take
place, as long as the minimum requirements are met. Check for these attendance requirements
within each course. After two (2) weeks with no communication, the professor will initiate the
withdrawal process and the student will be withdrawn from the course. Grade assignment will be
in accordance with College Course Withdrawal procedures.
Tardy Policy
Students are expected to be on time for each class. A student not present when roll is taken will be
marked absent. See your professor after class. (Do not assume that the absence will be changed to
tardy.) A second tardy will be charged as an absence. Materials are often distributed at the
beginning of class. The professor will not stop class to accommodate a late student. Students leaving
class early without specific permission will be marked absent.
Class and Assignments
During class students should not be entering anything into the computer unless the professor has
requested that they do so. Students will not use the Internet or play games, and no outside work will
be done during class unless permission has been given. Professors will normally act as a facilitator to
help each student learn course concepts. This means that quite often a question by the student will be
met with a question by the professor in order to help the student reach his/her own answer. Students
should always do his/her own work. Copying any type of assignments will not be tolerated, and
both the copier and the supplier will both receive grades of zero. All assignments must be submitted
through MyITLab. Do not email assignments to your instructor. Late work WILL NOT be accepted.
Course Withdrawal
Students missing the first 2 class meetings will be administratively dropped unless prior
arrangements are made with the course professor.
October 30, 2012 is the last day to withdraw and unconditionally receive a grade of W. Withdrawal
after this date will result in a grade based upon the quality of work produced at the date of
withdrawal.
Makeup Policy
Students are responsible for the timely makeup of all assignments missed while absent. Only one test
per semester may be made up if the reason for doing so is valid and if the following procedures are
followed:

The professor or office is called before the test period.
A suitable time has been arranged with the professor to make up the test. (The makeup test
will probably be a different test from that taken on the originally assigned date).

A makeup test will be allowed only for justifiable reasons and will be done only if the professor deems
the reason to be acceptable. Students are allowed to make up ONE test per semester, without the
approval of the department head.
Instructor Late Policy
If an instructor has not arrived in the classroom within 10 to 15 minutes of the scheduled class start
time, and prior arrangements have not been announced, the students should contact another
instructor in the Department to determine what the cause might be. Class is NOT dismissed until the
students are officially notified by someone in the Department.
