Dear Educator:
As a department of the University of Oxford, the Press furthers the University’s objective of
excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide. Our Canadian branch
was founded in 1904, and our first Canadian schoolbook—Canadian High School Arithmetic—was
published in 1925. More than three million copies of our most famous text, the Canadian Oxford School
Atlas, have been printed since the first edition appeared in 1958. You, like me, may well be familiar
with the iconic black-and-gold cover from your own days as a student!
Today the world is changing faster than ever and Oxford is changing with it. The Atlas—in its ninth
edition—remains a cornerstone of Canadian classrooms, and Oxford texts in the humanities and
social studies still set the benchmark for excellence. But exciting new resources such as Shakespeare
Online carry the Press’s traditional reputation for excellence into new multimedia dimensions. The
world of the twenty-first century is more interconnected than ever before and so too have new
partnerships with other leading educational publishers reinvigorated the Oxford list.
We are proud to represent in Canada the various imprints of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, one
of the largest and most respected American school publishers, as well as Davis Publications—
North America’s leading publisher of educational resources for art educators and students—and
Goodheart-Willcox, a long-established and leading publisher of technical, trades, and vocational
texts and resources. Oxford is also the Canadian home of the renowned literacy brand BOLDPRINT;
and we’re delighted to bring Project X, perhaps the most successful new literacy program of the past
decade in the UK, to the Canadian classroom.
Oxford offers a wide range of print and online resources tailored to the needs of today’s teachers and
students. It is our privilege to support you as an educator in the very important work that you do.
Sincerely,
David Stover
President

Profiles in Power
History
Each of the chapters in The Canadian Challenge is anchored
by a profile of the Prime Minister in power during the
period. It allows students to see events in context and
encourages them to explore how each Prime Minister
influenced Canada and the world during his or her time
in power.
Thinking Like a Historian
The Canadian Challenge teaches students historical thinking.
The “Thinking Like a Historian” section at the end of
each chapter helps students to find, select, and interpret
different sources of information, identify continuity
and change, analyze the causes and consequences of
events, use secondary sources as evidence, and ask
historical questions.
Up-to-Date Information
The final chapters of The Canadian Challenge deliver indepth analyses of the challenges Canada faces in the
21st century, including the complexities of the evolving
political landscape. In the final chapter, students are
asked to analyze future challenges and reflect on the role
they may play in dealing with them.

Connects the study of geography to students’ everyday
lives and encourages them to think how they can make a
difference in the world around them. Blending a geographic
inquiry model and a focus on natural and human systems,
Encounter Canada offers a fresh and innovative approach to
learning geography concepts and skills.
A highly visual text with an easy-to-follow structure
and smaller “chunks” of content. Hands-on activities
allow students to achieve success. Simple diagrams,
illustrations, charts, and maps provide effective content.
Basic foundational geographic skills such as mapping and
graphing are introduced early in the text and reinforced

History and Geography Grades 7–8
Authors: Christine Hannell
and Stewart Dunlop
Authors: Christine Hannell
and Stewart Dunlop
Students explore the five
themes of geography, the
different patterns in the
physical world, and the
world’s natural resources.
They also learn to interpret
and use a wide range of
data, and produce maps,
graphs, and diagrams. In
doing so, students apply
skills in research and
communication, and use of
maps and globes.
Students gain insight into
population distribution
around the world, trade
relationships between
different global economies
(with emphasis on
Canada), and factors
that affect migration.
Activities throughout
require students to use a
wide range of geographic
tools, such as topographic
maps, land-use maps,
scattergrams, and
population pyramids.
