CISA 310 • Introduction to Electionic Spreadsheets • Class Number 15226
08/24 – 10/18 • ONLINE
Instructor: Felicia Heiler
Voice Mail: 916-286-3602, E-Mail: heilerf@flc.losrios.edu
Catalog Description:
This course is designed to introduce the student to the use of spreadsheet programs. The
course will include designing a spreadsheet, developing formulas for accurate automatic
calculations, using spreadsheet functions, producing charts, developing “what-if” models
based upon relative and absolute cell referencing. Students will be using mathematical
concepts and skills.
Prerequisite:
None. Advisory CISC 300 or 310. Instructor note: Recommend at least Math 20, but prealgebra is preferred. Student should be familiar with the calculation of percents, and use of
mathematical orders of operations, and problem solving skills. Student should have excellent
reading comprehension skills. Critical thinking/problem solving is a real plus.
Credit:
1 unit (18 hours lecture + 18 hours lab), CSU transferable
Textbook:
Select one textbook only. The Introductory book is used for those students taking only CISA
310 and the Comprehensive edition is used for those taking both CISA 310 and CISA 311.
Microsoft Office Excel 2010, Introductory. Authors: Grauer, Mulbery & Poatsy; Publisher:
Prentice Hall; ISBN-13: 9780135098479.
OR
Exploring Microsoft Excel 2010 Comprehensive. Authors: Grauer, Poatsy, Mulbery, &
Hogan; Publisher: Prentice Hall ISBN-13: 9780135098592.
Supplies:
If you are working in our campus or center labs, you will need some storage device. All
computers on campus have USB ports for flash drives.
Student Learning
Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to do the following:

use text, values, formulas, and functions to create accurate spreadsheets efficiently.

use formula views to audit underlying mathematical formulas or functions for validity and
accuracy.

use relative, absolute, and mixed cell referencing to efficiently produce valid and effective
formulas which automatically calculate accurate results from varied data.

isolate constants which are variable in nature so that a change in the variable results in
immediate recalculations in the formula area without editing formulas based upon
changes in the data.

select appropriate ranges of data which can then be used to produce charts of various
types which graphically portray numerical data in the form of percentages, trends, or
comparisons.

use Boolean logic or logic tables to arrive at decisions about processing of the data.
Grading:
There are 510 points possible. The points break down as follows:
MS Excel / 10 pts each ........................................... 310
Four Chapter Exams @ 25 pts each ........................ 100
Final Exam ............................................................... 100
Final grade will be based on a scale of 90+% = A, 80% = B, 70% = C, 60% = D, 59-% = F.


Work through at least the required exercises.
Save the files and submit the assignments by the required due dates in the designated
chapter folders in the D2L “Dropbox”.
Dropping a Class:
Each student who is unable to complete this class must process the appropriate paperwork with
the Admissions Office to drop the class. Failure to do so will result in a final grade of “F”.
Data Files:
There are there ways to access the data files: (1) download the data files in the computer lab
on the T:/drive under my name, heiler; (2) download the data files from my web page
http://flc.losrios.edu/~heiler; (3) go to www.prenhall.com and download the files directly from
the publisher’s website. If you prefer to borrow a CD from me, send me an email.
Completing the Exercises: You should complete all required assignments according to the specifications within the text.
No coversheets are required as no printing is to be done.
The completed exercises should be placed in the chapter folders in the “Dropbox” in D2L.
There is a due date for each chapter which is shown as the End Date for the chapter folders in
the Dropbox. When the End Date has been reached, you will not be able to submit
assignments through the Dropbox. Within 5 days of submitting your assignments, I will give
your score in the feedback section of the Dropbox. If you turn in assignments early, you will
have the opportunity to resubmit corrected exercises without penalty. (This opportunity does
not apply to students who wait until the last couple of days of class to turn in work.)
Chapter Assignments:
Exercise Evaluation:
CISA 310, Fall 2013
Cruise through chapters 1-4. Do not attempt to simply do the required exercises without first
reading the chapters and doing all of the Hands-On Exercises. Turn in only the required
exercises via the D2L “Dropbox”, one chapter at a time. I do not need extra files.

Study/work through the concepts (white pages) of the chapters.

Complete the Hands-On Exercises (Yellow Pages).

Peruse the Chapter Objectives Review at the end of every chapter.

Self test on the multiple-choice exercises.

Do the exercises at the end of the chapter.

Send to me the completed exercises as shown in the table below.

Take the chapter exams in D2L. Be sure to take the D2L exam when finishing each
chapter while the material is still fresh in your mind. You get two chances at each quiz.
The higher score is used for the final score.

Sheet Views: The question has come up among students as to how the sheets should
appear when complete. To this end, I have placed the sheet views for the chapters in D2L.
These views will not give you the underlying formulas. However, the data shown is
correct. Your underlying formulas should give the results shown. If not recheck your
formulas. In addition, there is some leeway in formatting such as clipart, theme colors or
font. I am not overly concerned about exact clipart, fonts, or themed colors.
Exercises are evaluated using one or more of the following criteria:

Is the student’s name on every sheet to identify the sheet as his or her work?

Do the formulas result in a correct calculation? Is the math behind the formula logical?

Are sheets formatted in an attractive manner (Titles centered, text visible, column values
are consistent)?
2
8/8/2013

Is the use of cell referencing (relative or absolute) when copying formulas done
effectively? Does the formula(s) accurately reference the correct cells when using cell
referencing?

Is the use of cell referencing (relative or absolute) when copying formulas done
efficiently? Did the student simple type the adjusted formula numerous times? This is
terribly inefficient.

Are charts appropriate and are they titled?
Final Exam:
The Final Exam will be posted in D2L. It is a 100 question, two-hour time limit exam that
covers the four Excel chapters with 25 randomized questions from each chapter.
Student Rights and
Responsibilities:
Please refer to pages 51-62 in the College Catalog (on the college website and Insider) for the
policies that will govern this class.
Support Services:
There are support services such as tutoring available to students. Click on the Student
