(3 credit hours) This course is designed to give students experience with Microsoft® Office Applications for the purpose of performing business tasks and for providing training for expected upper-division coursework needs. The course is in a lab environment with direct instruction concerning the use of current software, internet applications, and electronic communication. Out of class assignments require the use of a computer with Internet access. Learning Objectives 1. Students will examine Internet resources and demonstrate the ability to download files from web sites, to use Internet search engines to locate information to be used in the solution of cases, to send and receive e-mail and attachments, to save files as web pages, and to import web information into applications. 2. Students will have online use of myitlab which simulates Microsoft 2007. This software will be required to complete some assignments. 3. Students will demonstrate an ability to use Microsoft® Word 2007, Microsoft® PowerPoint 2007, Microsoft® Access 2007, and Microsoft® Excel 2007 software. 4. Students will create and edit spreadsheets using Microsoft® Excel 2007 and will demonstrate the ability to save, print, create hyperlinks, create macros using Visual Basic, compute values using relative and absolute formulas, produce charts, and apply advanced techniques including freezing panes, data analysis, goal seek, and solver. 5. Students will demonstrate an ability to use Microsoft® Access 2007 software including creating and editing databases, analyzing and creating reports, working with multiple tables, and creating custom forms. 6. Students will sit for an Excel Microsoft® Certified Application Specialist Exam thereby gaining the opportunity to become Excel Certified. 7. Students will demonstrate the ability to integrate software packages to solve business problems. 8. Students will complete a project requiring the integrated use of Office 2007 software. The students will research an MIS problem and create a PowerPoint slide show to present to the class. Evaluation Production Tests (40%) Two production tests will be given during the course of the class. Each will count as 20% of the final grade. MCAS Excel Test (20%) A Microsoft® Certification Application Specialist Exam will be given for Excel. All students passing this exam at the acceptable standard will receive a certificate from Microsoft® stating certification. This exam is scheduled in advance, and students are expected to attend on the date announced. The MCAS exam is 20% of the final grade. Those students not receiving certification on the first take of the exam will have an opportunity to take the exam a second time approximately one week after the first exam. Your instructor will announce when the second exam will be scheduled. Assigned Class work (25%) Students will complete online and in-class assignments to be submitted for credit. No work will be accepted by email. Project (15%) Students will be assigned a project requiring a PowerPoint slide show presentation. All students must be in class and present the PowerPoint presentation to receive credit for the project. The presentations will be given over a two-day period which will be the last class day and the day scheduled for the final exam. All students must be in class both days to receive full credit for the presentation. Grading Scale Production Tests 1, and 2 MCAS Test Class work Project Total 40% 20% 25% 15% 100% A=90% +, B=80-89%, C=70-79%, D=60-69%, F=Below 60%. No plus or minus grades will be given. The MIS department does not post grades. Conduct Your instructor will adhere to university policies related to cheating and class conduct. (Refer to the Student Handbook, sections Academic and Misconduct and Classroom Misconduct for information) One item in the handbook specifies that students are not to cause disturbances in the classroom. In addition to any improper classroom behavior, any behavior that is distracting for other students or for your instructor is not allowed. Examples include bringing non-enrolled guests to class, and bringing phones or pagers that ring or beep during class. No food or beverages are allowed in the classroom. Cell phones, iPods and other players are not appropriate for the classroom. Your instructor will give one warning if a cell phone rings. A second occasion will result in a 2-point deduction in your final grade. A third occasion will result in an additional 5-points deduction. After 3 occasions, you will be asked to leave the class. It is important that you attend class and that you arrive on time and stay until the class ends. Class attendance will be checked each day. If you are late, make sure you tell your instructor. Some of the work that is done in class is not available in the textbook you purchased. It is to your benefit that you attend class each day. Your instructor reserves the right to penalize your class work grade for repeated offences.
