SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT FOR QUARTER I
PAPER 3: SPEAKING/ORAL ASSESSMENT TEST
S.Y. 2013 – 2014
Conducting the Oral Assessment Test
The Oral Assessment Test should proceed along the following lines. The teacher may do either on-thespot evaluation or post-performance evaluation (if the main test was recorded/taped).
1. Welcome the student and explain briefly what is going to happen in the course of the test.
2. Warm-up section: conduct a general conversation by asking the student a few questions about
herself/himself, the school, etc. to give the student time to get used to the examination situation.
3. Hand the oral assessment card/paper to the student. This must take place AFTER the warm-up
has taken place. Any necessary explanation should be given at this point, followed by a short
preparation period (approx. 1-2 minutes), when the student is at liberty to ask questions.
4. MAIN PART OF THE TEST: The Test is divided into two parts: (1) Read Aloud and (2) Panel
Discussion.
a. Read Aloud. Each student will be given the copy of the poem to be read in front of the
class. He/she will be assessed using a rubric.
b. Panel Discussion. The Class will prepare a panel discussion setup with five to eight
persons per batch, who will do AT LEAST ONE of the three sets provided herein.
5. The oral assessment test must be conducted in English all throughout.

Excerpt from Epic Darangan
O Hinagud!
O great spear
Of hardened, holy wood,
With point of blessed metal,
Go you high! Go far!
Meet you the magic of my foes;
Strike you the magic
Of mine enemies,
Take your blows
And strike again!
Strike surely – swiftly,
Unrelentingly.
In God’s mighty name I, thus, entreat;
With God’s voice
I, thus, command you,
I, the Emperor,
The King Indarapatra.
***
Far above the sunset glory,
In an arc of flaming splendor,
Great Hinagud cleft the sky,
Falling on the mighty summit
Of the angry Bud Natutan.
Thunder crushed and echoed loudly,
Through the still and sullen hills.
And the mighty mountain split up,
Throwing high a horrid vomit,
Vomit made of burning rocks,
And the tortured land lay trembling
Rocking, heaving helplessly.
II. PANEL DISCUSSION.
1. The students will be grouped by five to eight in a panel discussion setup.
2. Each student will act as a guest panelist and must give their insights through ANY ONE of the
