Program Philosophy
• Knowledge and Employability courses are available
to students in grades 8 through 12 who fit
established criteria.
• The courses are intended to provide students with
opportunities to experience success and become
well prepared for employment, further studies,
active citizenship and lifelong learning.

Course Plan
Each K&E student will have opportunities to:
• gain/improve upon foundational skills in core
courses
• possibly move onto complete curriculum within a
school year
• create a path to earn at least a Certificate of High
School Achievement (80 credits) or, as
appropriate, an Alberta High School Diploma (100
credits)

Each K&E student will have opportunities to:
• write Knowledge and Employability Provincial
Achievement Tests in grade 9 that match what has
been studied
• have their families be actively involved in
developing, updating and monitoring their own
learning plan; parents can be your greatest
partners
• explore their own learning styles and adjust their
learning to match.

Grade 8 Program
• Students have a low teacher : student ratio
(1:15-18).
• Educational Assistant presence in core classes.
• Depth of skills/knowledge in core areas is reduced
or modified compared to a typical grade 8
program.
• Parents are involved for at-home support and
guidance.

Grade 8 Program
• Assessments are done early to determine student
learning levels; programs are created to meet
students where they are and see them advance
gradually.
• Higher emphasis on having kids learn in ways that
match their individual learning styles.
• Greater emphasis on developing social skills,
working in groups, and gaining student
independence.

Grade 9 Program
• Builds on success of the grade 8 program, but
participation in grade 8 is not required.
• Depth of knowledge/skills in core areas is a reduced/
modified version of full grade 9 program.
• Students write Grade 9 K&E Provincial Achievement
Tests in May and June.
• Students participate in job shadowing off-campus
during the school day.

Grade 9 Job Shadowing
• 2 seven-week job shadowing off-campus experiences
that allow students to learn more about the world of
work and gain valuable skills and connections in the
community.
• Before going, kids will complete some job-awareness skill
development (Occupations 9 course material).
• Placements will be initiated by students’ interests;
• classroom teacher oversees performance in
conjunction with job supervisors
• in-class performance and attendance determines
weekly participation in job shadowing; if you’re behind
in your studies, you cannot go to work.

Q. Why has my child be recommended for this program?
A. It’s all about learning.
• Your child may presently be 2-3 grades below
other grade 7 or 8 students and would benefit
from greater 1-1 support and more personalized
plans for educational achievement.
• Your child is presently not achieving at least 50%
in core classes, or is only doing so with
adjustments to curriculum.

even with teacher assistance and extra time.
• Your child’s attendance has been such that gaps in
learning are evident and we want to boost his/her

Q. What option does my student have for high school classes?
A. Kids who have taken K&E 8 or 9 classes may be best suited
for 10-4 courses (K&E) in high school.
Many students who start in 10-4 courses transition to 10-3 or
higher level courses during the quarter.
Careful transition planning occurs between St. Francis and
CCHS for grade 9s.

Q. How does K&E curriculum compare to the regular curriculum?
A. Curriculums are quite similar, and in some subjects just as
challenging
Fewer outcomes than in ‘regular’ programs. As a result,
students get stronger in the most important concepts/skills
Reduced curriculum allows for work to be done almost
exclusively in the classroom; ‘homework’ is rare
Greater commitment to meeting students where they are
individually to see them excel in a more personal way
