SAC students working hard to document new information on reptiles. By: Karim Usman To kick off the school year, all grades, pre-k - 8th grade traveled to Lincoln Park Zoo for an adventurous field trip. Each grade level was split up, and then they explored different animals. They saw zebras, giraffes, lions, tigers, see otters, and a lot more. They heard the lion roar, they saw the monkeys climbing and swinging on trees, and they saw the otters swim around the whole tank. Social Studies teacher, Mr.Hansen, gave students a scavenger hunt. In the hunt, students discovered new information about animals. Also, they located statues and read about people who created them. Reading Buddies By: Tuba Korkmaz At SAC, kindergarteners and third graders have reading buddies to improve kindergarteners’ reading levels. Every year Mrs. Zorin and her Kindergarteners meet with the third graders and either read in the Library or classroom. Every Friday, after lunch they meet and read. This helps the third graders because they cooperate with the younger children. This is also beneficial for the kindergarteners because they learn how to read with older kids. Book buddies reading and enjoying the nice weather outside. V OLUME 1, I SSUE 1 P AGE 4 Family Fun Night Parent Teacher Organization By: Bushra Yazjanova By: Sena Bahar Tiryaki Families preparing to die dye at the Family Fun Night. Each month SAC has an enjoyable activity where families have fun with their children. Each class individually plans on the monthly night out. For example, the pre-k’s had an activity about tie dying and coloring projects. Family fun night is located in the gym of SAC. HOW TO TIE DYE: You will need the following materials: Gloves Fabric Dye Plastic squeeze bottle Ziploc bags| Salt Rubber Bands A white t-shirt (100% cotton recommended) Disposable plastic table cloth or garbage bags Large bucket or bowls Plastic squeeze bottle 1. Grab a 100% cotton shirt 2. If you bought a kit, the dye will already be in the squeeze bottle. All you need to do is add warm water 3. To enable the Procyon dyes to bond with the shirt, you need to soak it in warm water and soda ash for 10minutes. The temperature of the water should be same as a baby’s bath! 4. Now soak the water out. After you did that, you get to pick any style you want! There is a striped design and a spiral design 5. The next thing to do is rubber band the shirt tightly 6. Now have fun with the dye and squirt any color you want! Parents and Teachers at the PTO Meeting. Do you want to know what the parents are planning? Science Academy of Chicago (SAC) Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) had two meetings so far for the 2015-2016 school year. During both meetings, the PTO discussed events that are being planned such as the Back to School Fall Festival and the annual Thanksgiving Dinner. The PTO’s signature event is its Thanksgiving Dinner. Last year, approximately 450 people attended. The PTO is still discussing the details about the event (i.e. seating arrangements, food preparation, date of the event) They also discussing if they should have the children sitting by the adults or if they should sit separately, but they are thinking if they should only let older kids sit with adults. The winter concert (Cutting Hall, Palatine, December 10th) and bake sales were briefly discussed as well. The PTO has about 20 to 23 members, but they are always looking for more members to volunteer T HE C HRONICLE P AGE 5 Teacher Spotlight Fall Word Search By Burak Gulsen By Selma Ucan Mr. Linardakis, SAC’s science teacher for grades 4-8, is in the teacher spotlight! Then something unexpected happens at a Chinese restaurant that changes their life! This movie stars: Jamie Lee Curtis as the Mom, and the one and only Lindsay Lohan as the high schooler. One of her most popular childhood movies was The Parent Trap. I loved this movie and I rate it 5 stars! The only thing I would change is the fiancé, because he doesn’t look suitable for the mom: Jess. P AGE 7 FUN FACTS School desks have 300 more bacteria then a toilet seat. I thought the noodles wouldn’t be that great because it was my mom’s first time making them. Cajun Noodles are bow-tie noodles with chicken and a special sauce. The sauce is made out of several ingredients such as butter and spice. When my mom was finished cooking, we came to the dinner table and ate. And when I tried the noodles, they were so tasty that they are now one of my favorite foods! Also, my family enjoyed them too. It was a pleasant experience.
