CELEBRATING 25 YEARS
From the President
As President of the Shaker Schools Foundation, I am pleased to report on
the results of the past year. I am very grateful to each member of our dedicated board and staff, as well as to the administration and School Board. It is a
pleasure to work with them on behalf of the extraordinary Shaker Heights City
Schools, which contribute so much to our community and to society.
This autumn, the Foundation will celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary. In
preparation for that happy occasion, we have been reflecting on our accomplishments and the challenges yet before us. You will read about our history
elsewhere in this Annual Report, but I want to point out several themes that
have emerged.
The Shaker Schools Foundation was founded in 1981 by citizens who beNancy Karr
lieved that Shaker parents, graduates, and residents might make contributions in
support of extra programs that were not covered by the District’s budget. It was
the first foundation in the state of Ohio to raise funds for a public school system, and it was designed to receive “gifts and bequests for scholarships, capital
improvements, and special programs for the ultimate benefit of the students of
the Shaker Heights City School District,” according to our first president. As
has often been the case, our community’s leaders made a
pace-setting decision in support of our schools.
The Shaker Schools bold,We
are proud to continue providing resources to
enrich the educational experiences of students in the
Foundation provides Shaker Heights City School District. The generosity of
our donors has enabled the Foundation to make a posidifference in the education of Shaker’s students. We
resources to enrich the tive
have done so through grants to teachers to fund programs
that enhance learning and creativity; the underwriting of
educational experience projects that support curriculum; awards that recognize
our students’ achievements in academics, the arts, and cocurricular activities; and capital improvements to learnof students of the ing environments.
During 2005, the Foundation awarded grants to 48
teachers
in support of programs that included the purShaker Heights City
chase of materials for digital portfolios to record elementary students’ accomplishments; the creation of a Latin
School District. dance class for High School students and their parents
to increase interest in language and culture; and a variety
of projects to nurture all academic areas. Donors established endowed funds to celebrate a parent’s milestone birthday as well as to
honor the lives of several Shaker students and a faculty member. To recognize
their generosity and the support of the larger community, we hosted our first
donor reception in April 2005. A few weeks later, the Foundation went “on the
road” to reach out to alumni who live and work in New York City. Our campaign to renovate the small auditorium at the High School reached its $400,000
goal, because our extraordinary community responded with enthusiasm and
generosity.
These are only a few of the highlights of our busy year, and we thank you for
making the Shaker Schools Foundation’s ongoing service to the Shaker Schools
possible. We are grateful to be in a position to help realize your dreams, and
we look forward to many more years of working together to ensure that our
community’s children receive the best education in Ohio. Thank you.
Nancy Karr

History
The Shaker Schools Foundation
The establishment of a foundation that
builds an endowment for a public institution is a radical departure for public
schools, and the Shaker Schools Foundation is among the first of its kind to be created in the country.” (Shaker Schools
Foundation’s first Annual Report, 19821983).
As early as the 1970s, Shaker residents
were discussing whether a foundation
could be established to support the school
system. Their vision became reality
on November 18, 1981, when the Shaker
Schools Foundation
was incorporated. It
was the first foundation in the state of
Ohio to support public schools and was
established with the
purpose of receiving
gifts for scholarships,
capital improvements, and special
programs to benefit
the students in the
Shaker Heights City
School District. That
intention has guided the Foundation
during its entire existence and was rearticulated as a mission
statement in 2001: The Shaker Schools
Foundation provides resources to enrich
the educational experience of students of
the Shaker Heights City School District.
It is widely accepted that the quality
of life in Shaker Heights depends on the
reputation of its schools. Since the opening of the community’s first school in
1912, the District has developed and sus-
tained an educational program that challenges each student to work toward superior scholastic achievement. Shaker Heights
is home to one of the country’s preeminent
school districts because its residents are
committed to a community that is diverse
and vibrant and to a public school system
of the highest quality. By supporting
teaching and learning in the District, the
Shaker Schools Foundation helps the city
attract residents who value education, as
well as the very best faculty and administrators who will uphold these high ideals.
Throughout its existence, the Shaker
Schools Foundation
has enhanced classroom instruction at
all grade levels with
grants to t e a c h e r s
and for projects
and has made
awards to individual
students to recognize their academic
success and encourage their pursuit of
advanced studies.
In 2001, the Foundation decided to
explore additional
opportunities to support the entire school
district and, in 2002,
initiated a capital
campaign to improve the high school’s
two auditoriums. The small auditorium
was renovated and outfitted with technology upgrades to create a 100-seat
academic space for lectures, multimedia
presentations, technology-enhanced instruction, and small-group rehearsals and
performances. The Foundation raised
$400,000 for this project, which was com-

pleted in November 2003 and
continues to provide a greatly
improved learning environment.
Now the Shaker Schools
Foundation is seeking capital
funds of $1.4 million to refurbish the large auditorium.
Used for a variety of High
School and District activities,
the large auditorium is notable
for its architectural beauty.
Restoring the space to its original splendor while retrofitting
it for state-of-the-art sound,
lighting, and technology will
create a venue commensurate
with the performances of
Shaker’s theater and music
programs. The renovation
also will provide an exceptional environment for classes,
presentations, and meetings.
In 1991, several community leaders sought the Foundation’s opinion of a gala
event that could raise funds
for the schools. Their idea, A
Night for the Red & White
White,
made its debut on February
27, 1992. Since that time, the
popular annual benefit has raised more
than $1 million to support technology, the
arts, and humanities in the Shaker schools.
This community project is a testament to
the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, working on behalf of Shaker’s children.
Throughout its history, the Shaker
Schools Foundation has provided a means
for individuals and organizations to express their gratitude for and belief in the
work of the Shaker Heights City Schools.
1983
In February, author and illustrator Steven Kellogg
spends a morning with elementary school students and the afternoon with art classes at the
High School. The Shaker Schools Foundation
provides funding for his visit.
1981-2006 SHAKER SCHOOLS FOUNDATION
With gifts from a large community of donors, the Foundation has been able to offer
students and faculty a variety of educational experiences that would not otherwise
have been possible. The years to come
hold much promise and many opportunities for continued service. The Shaker
Schools Foundation, guided by its committed board of trustees and supported by a
growing cohort of contributors, is ready to
embrace its future.
1988
An enrichment grant from the Foundation helps
provide scholarships for an elementary school field
trip to Greenfield Village in Michigan. Teacher
reports indicate that for some, this has been the
first long-distance bus ride, the first overnight
school trip, or the first excursion outside of Ohio.

Funds
Since its inception, the Shaker Schools Foundation has encouraged donations in honor or
in memory of an individual or family. When gifts reach $2,000, a named endowment fund
is established, and income from such funds helps support teaching and learning in the
Shaker Heights City Schools. The first six funds created in the Foundation’s early years
represent the themes that have continued over the past 25 years: honoring the contributions or memory of faculty members, students, and loved ones and supporting academic
activities. Today 58 funds help fulfill the mission of the Shaker Schools Foundation by
supporting programs that enrich curricula, encourage and celebrate student achievement,
provide professional development, and enhance learning environments. The following
funds were established as of December 31, 2005.

Homecoming.
2005
On April 18, the Foundation hosts “Shaker in New York,” a
special event for alumni living on the East Coast. Nearly
150 attend, representing the classes of 1942 to 2004. Ten
alumni whose careers are in the performing arts provide the
entertainment.
CELEBRATING 25 YEARS
A Nightfor the
Red and White
The Friends of the Shaker Schools Foundation presented A Night for the Red & White
on March 19, 2005, at the Inter-Continental Hotel. This extraordinary benefit broke all
records for attendance and proceeds, raising more than $140,000 to enhance technology,
the arts, and humanities in each of the Shaker Heights City Schools. The first A Night
for the Red & White was held in 1992, and since that time these events have contributed
over $1 million to enrich learning for Shaker’s students. Many thanks and congratulations to the volunteers who spent countless hours planning the 2005 event – and to the
community for its generous support.

Peter’s Garden Donors
Ground was broken in October 2004 for a very special project at Onaway Elementary
School – Peter’s Garden. This learning garden honors the memory of Peter MorgensternClarren, Shaker Class of 1999, who attended Onaway and tutored there until his death
in spring 2004. Funded entirely by more than 400 donors and the Morgenstern-Clarren
family, the Garden was dedicated in fall 2005. Composed of an observation section, performing area, and dreaming garden, the newly landscaped area provides a beautiful, educational space for students and enhances the Onaway neighborhood year-round. Many
thanks to these generous donors, whose contributions helped to build Peter’s Garden.
