Webpage: www.math.gatech.edu/~zlin Prerequisites: Math 4318 Required Text: Real Analysis: Measure Theory, Integration, and Hilbert Spaces, by Elias M. Stein and Rami Shakarchi, Princeton University Press, 2005. Supplementary Text: 1. An introduction to measure theory, by Terrence Tao: http://terrytao.…les.wordpress.com/2011/01/measurebook1.pdf 2. Real Analysis (4th Edition), by Halsey Royden and Patrick Fitzpatrick, Pearson, 2010. Material: Measure Theory (Chapter 1) Integration Theory (Chapter 2) Di¤erentiation and Integration (Chapter 3) Abstract Measure and Integration Theory (Chapter 6) Participation: Attendance in classes is mandatory. Students are expected to read the materials before and/or after the classes. It is suggested that you start to work on homework problems right after they are assigned. Academic Dishonesty: All students are expected to comply with the Georgia Tech Honor Code. Any evidence of cheating or other violations of the Georgia Tech Honor Code will be submitted directly to the Dean of Students. The institute honor code is available at http://www.deanofstudents.gatech.edu/integrity/policies/honor code.php Grading: There will be homework assignments weekly, two midterm exams and one …nal. They will count toward the grade as follows: Assignments 33% Each Midterm 16% Final 35%. 1. Solutions to the assigned problems should be written up clearly, and should contain explanations of critical steps. Homeworks are due at the BEGINNING of class on the announced due date, and late homeworks will NOT be accepted. A selected subset of problems from each assignment will be graded. One assignment will be dropped in the calculation of your grade. 2. The midterm exams are take home (for 24 hours), and the comprehensive …nal is 2 hours and 50 minutes (as scheduled by the University). There will be NO makeup exams. The weight of the missed exam will be moved to the …nal, only if you can present evidence that your absence was due to serious illness, death in the family, or participation in University activities at the request of University authorities. The tentative schedule for the exams is as follows: Exam 1: Wednesday, 2/13. Exam 2: Wednesday, 3/27. Final Exam: Wednesday, 5/1, 11:30-2:20. To get an A, respectively B,C, and D, your …nal score will have to be greater than 90%, respectively 80%, 70%, and 60%. Some of these requirements may be lowered if the overall average score of the class is low (i.e. your grade may get curved up).
