Message from the President
I am pleased to provide a review of the Association of Diabetes Educators of Singapore
(ADES) in FY 2012.
It is to no surprise of the increase in the demand for diabetes education across
healthcare continuum in tandem with the growing number of people with diabetes and
chronic diseases. Indeed, each time when our current and past committee members get
together to reflect on the achievements of ADES since its inauguration in 1997, it really
warm our hearts to see our voluntary organization which is managed solely by a team
of compassionate diabetes trained nurse volunteers being able to come together to
organize monthly continuous education workshop and talks, organize outreach and
education projects and continuously expanding our networking across countries to learn
and share expertise.
Although, ADES operates on a miniature scale amidst the extensiveness of the
healthcare system and constantly faces ongoing challenges in its operations. I am glad
that ADES has continuously been able to attract capable, passionate and cheerful
working committee and subcommittee to help in its growth . In addition, with the
emerges of the social platforms, ADES has also proactively engaged such platforms to
provide peers to seek solace and friendships over the years.
Our work in training healthcare professionals continues to make good progress. Further
afield, ADES has initiated collaborative effort with Diabetes Society of Singapore,
National University of Singapore Medical Society Hospital, Touch Diabetes Support and
various community leaders to support programmes and activities for prevention and
training for public and people with diabetes.
We have achieved much in FY 2012 through the dedicated committee members and our
partners whom have worked alongside us to help us achieve goals and contributions to
the society. As such, better information and delivery of education and care have been
disseminated and shared to meet the needs of healthcare professionals and people with
diabetes. I would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone for their
contributions and support.
Yours sincerely,
Brenda Lim
President, ADES

3.0 ACCREDIATION & CERTIFICATION & CERTIFICATION BOARD FOR
CERTIFIED DIABETES EDUCATORS
A Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) is a diabetes nurse who possesses comprehensive
knowledge of and experience in diabetes management, pre-diabetes, and diabetes
prevention.
Every year, the sub-committee of ADES Accreditation & Certification Board led by
Diabetes Advanced Practice Nurse Ms Joyce Lim and Ms Sri Rahayu Masjum are
committed for development and administration of certification program for Certified
Diabetes Educators in Singapore. We had 8 candidates on 19th November 2011 and 4
candidates on 25th August 2012 for their first certification with requirements including
320 hours of core curriculum on diabetes training and 1200 hours of patient education
and counselling. By the 5th year from day of certification, all CDE will need to apply for
re-certification with completed 100 hours of core curriculum and 500 hours of diabetes
related clinical hours. This year, we received 6 CDE for re-certifications.
We are privileged to invite Dr Shaikh Shakoor Abdul as our chairperson for ADES &
Endocrine and Metabolic Society of Singapore (EMSS) as Certification Board for
Diabetes Educators A/Prof Thai Ah Chuan from National University Hospital and Medical
Advisor of ADES to advise on the standards of written assessment examination.
