Alumni Directory Child Health Research Award Recipients and Hood Postdoctoral Research Fellows 1942 – 2014 The history of the Charles H. Hood Foundation reveals a century‐long tradition of commitment to community and child health. Countless researchers funded by the Child Health Research Awards Program have made seminal contributions that have benefited large numbers of children. Many of these scientists have also achieved brilliant careers as leaders in their fields. In its early years, the Program focused on infectious diseases, prevention, and training for health professionals. From the mid‐1940s until 1971, the Foundation supported a diversity of programs seeking to improve child health including medical research, demonstration projects, public health programs, scholarships and fellowships. As the Foundation reorganized in 1971, it increased its budget and explicitly emphasized basic science and medical research as its priorities. Over the years, expertise has been added to its Scientific Review Committee to reflect growth of research in genetics, oncology, epidemiology, and other disciplines. The Child Health Program also shifted to an exclusive focus on young investigators. Today, the Child Health Research Awards Program makes two‐year grants which support hypothesis‐driven clinical, basic science, public health, health services research, and epidemiology projects relevant to pediatrics. In addition, the Hood Foundation supports two basic science and/or clinical postdoctoral fellows in Massachusetts. The Foundation’s trustees have also made large grants in health policy and translational research to established New England investigators. To‐date, the Foundation has distributed over $63 million to New England research institutions. The following pages list all Child Health Award Recipients in alphabetical order with the date of their award, title of the original research project and current contact information. The last four pages (48 – 51) denote the 43 Hood Fellows, funded between 1989 and 2014. The Hood Foundation is immensely proud of its Award Recipients and values updates on their current endeavors.
