The Golden Bears and the Aggies square off Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. Cal went 1-2 in the Old Spice Classic, defeating No. 20 Temple in its first game of the tournament last Thursday. The victory marked the first time that the Bears have beaten a nonconference team ranked in the top 20 since 1998 (No. 9 North Carolina). Cal lost the next two games to Notre Dame and Boston College. The Bears struggled to score in both games, producing final scores of 44 against Notre Dame and 46 against Boston College. One of the bright spot in the Old Spice Classic for Cal was the play of freshman guard Allen Crabbe, recording his first collegiate double-double, boasting 10 points and 10 rebounds against Notre Dame. He is now fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 8.0 ppg. Crabbe just missed out on reaching his first double-double the previous night against Temple, as he racked up 12 points and eight rebounds against the Owls. A team that will pride itself on its defense all year, in two of their last two games, the Bears held Notre Dame to shoot 27.8 from the field and Temple to 33.3. Boasting a youthful team this season with five true freshmen, the Bears turned to their newcomers to make an immediate impact right away, and they have not disappointed. In addition to Crabbe’s performance last Friday, fellow freshman guard Gary Franklin scored 16 points against New Mexico on Nov. 20, drilling four of his 10 three-point attempts. Franklin is also third on the team in scoring at 9.4 ppg. Forward Richard Solomon has snagged 22 rebounds through the first five games. Junior guard Jorge Gutierrez was firing away from three-point range against Boston College last Sunday, connecting on four of his five attempts. He led the Bears in scoring against Boston College, collecting 12 points along with four rebounds and four assists. Gutierrez is Cal’s leading scorer on the season at 13.4 ppg, but not far behind is junior forward Harper Kamp at 12.6 ppg. Kamp led the Bears in the victory over Temple with 13 points and seven rebounds. A win over UC Davis and Mike Montgomery would reach 50 wins at Cal in 74 games — faster than any coach at Cal since Nibs Price won 50 of his first 60 games from 1924-25 through the start of the 1928-29 season. Montgomery is also four wins away from his 600th career collegiate head coaching victory. A four-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year and recipient of a John R. Wooden "Legends of Coaching" Lifetime Achievement Award, Montgomery brought a proven record of success to Berkeley, and has collected 20 postseason appearances, claimed five conference championships and reached the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. After the first week of this season, Montgomery was named the National Coach of the Week by The Hoops Report after Cal’s two season-opening victories over Cal State Northridge and New Mexico. Montgomery continues the 2010-11 season with a 596-268 (.689) record at the college level, a mark that places him sixth in victories among active coaches at the Division I level. He was 393-167 (.702) over 18 years at Stanford from 1987-2004 and 154-77 (.667) during the previous eight seasons at Montana. Overall, 27 of his 28 teams have posted winning records. In his first season coaching the Bears, Montgomery took a team that was predicted to come in eighth in the Pac-10 preseason media poll and guided Cal to a third-place finish in the conference. Montgomery also helped Jerome Randle and Patrick Christopher earn All-Pac-10 first-team honors. Under Montgomery's guidance, Randle won Pac-10 Player of the Year honors in 2010. While coaching at Stanford, Montgomery garnered an assortment of honors, including the prestigious John R. Wooden "Legends of Coaching" Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. The Long Beach, Calif., native was tabbed the Sports Illustrated National Coach of the Year in 2000 and the Naismith and Basketball Times Coach of the year in '04. In addition, he has been honored as the Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2004. NIT First Round NIT First Round Montgomery received the John R. Wooden "Legends of Coaching" Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, following Dean Smith of North Carolina (1999), Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (2000), Lute Olson of Arizona (2001), Denny Crum of Louisville (2002) and Roy Williams of Kansas (2003). The award recognizes coaches who exemplify Coach Wooden's high standards of coaching success and personal accolades. Three student-athletes under Montgomery's tutelage have been named Wooden All-Americans (Todd Lichti in 1989, Mark Madsen in 2000 and Casey Jacobsen in 2001). During the year, Stanford set or tied 13 Pac-10 and school records, including team marks for wins (31) and scoring average (83.2). Since Haas opened in the fall of 1999, Cal has posted a 138-46 record on Pete Newell Court, good for a .750 winning percentage. In 2010-11, the Bears won all except one game on the home court. A Look at UC Davis UC Davis heads to Berkeley winners of three out of its last four. The Aggies beat Sacramento State and Seattle in their last two contests. Guard Joe Harden paces the Aggies in scoring, averaging 14.1 ppg and 7.3 rpg. Fellow guard Mark Payne is also posting an average of 12.6 ppg. One of the Aggies’ starting guards, Eddie Miller, was a member of the Cal basketball team from 2007-09. Cal-UC Davis Series History Cal boasts an all-time perfect record of 30-0 against UC Davis. The last time these teams met, the Bears were victorious, 90-71, during the 1986-87 campaign. UC Davis Head Coach Gary Stewart Gary Stewart is in his seventh season as head coach of the Aggies and his 17th season overall as a head coach. In his first head coaching stint, he guided La Verne, his alma mater, from last place to first in a matter of three years. He was also the head coach at Cal State East Bay before heading to Davis. It was Cal’s first victory over a ranked nonconference opponent since defeating No. 9 North Carolina in 1998. Harper Kamp led the Bears in scoring over the Owls with 13 points and six rebounds. Cal’s offense sputtered in the next two games, being held to just five points in the first half against Notre Dame and 15 in the second half against Boston College. Despite strong defensive efforts in both games, the Bears lost their last two games in the tournament. Cal’s Defense on Top of its Game While Cal’s offense only garnered five points against Notre Dame last Friday in the Old Spice Classic, the defense kept the Bears in the game, limiting the Irish to just 21 first-half points. Notre Dame ended the contest shooting 27.8 from the field. In Cal’s victory over Temple last Thursday, the Bears held the Owls to shoot just 33.3 from the field. Opposing offenses are averaging just over 60.0 ppg against Cal this season (60.4), which ranks fourth in the conference. The Bears are also holding opponents to shoot just 37.5 percent from the field and that mark currently ranks second in the conference. Gutierrez Starts Season Off on Right Foot Jorge Gutierrez set new career highs in scoring in the first two games of the season (18 vs. Cal State Northridge and 20 vs. New Mexico). His previous career high was 15. He also posted a new personal best in assists with eight against the Matadors. Gutierrez was a catalyst for the Bears, not only taking over for Jerome Randle as the team’s point guard, but he also maintained his strong defensive presence. He scored the Bears’ first basket of the game against New Mexico on a layup after notching his first steal, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Gutierrez was also clutch at the free throw line, connecting on 20 of his 26 attempts in the two games, including 13-for-15 against CSUN. He led Cal in scoring against Boston College in last week’s Old Spice Classic, collecting 12 points, four assists and four rebounds. Gutierrez is the team’s early scoring leader at 13.4 ppg. He is also four wins away from his 600th career collegiate head coaching victory. Montgomery has quickly turned things around for Cal basketball in his short time with the team. In his first season, he took a team predicted to finish eighth in the conference to a third-place finish and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Last season, the Bears garnered a Top-20 preseason ranking, won its first Pac-10 championship in 50 years and garnered a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, advancing to the second round. Montgomery also guided Jerome Randle to be named the 2010 Pac-10 Player of the Year. His 596 career wins currently ranks sixth among active NCAA head coaches. Harper Kamp: Picking Up Where He Left Off After redshirting last season due to a nagging knee injury, Harper Kamp has picked up right where he left off in the 2008-09 campaign. Kamp posted a career-best 25 points against New Mexico on Nov. 20. His previous personal high was 18 points. He led Cal in scoring for the second straight game against Temple last Thursday with 13 points. Kamp is currently second on the team in scoring (12.6) and third in rebounding (5.6). After making his first 10 free throws, he has made 16 of his 18 tries (.889) from the charity stripe that ranks tied for second in the Pac-10. Sanders-Frison Makes an Immediate Impact After battling back spasms through the second half of last season, Markhuri Sanders-Frison got his senior season off to a great start with his first career double-double against Cal State Northridge on Nov. 16. Sanders-Frison tallied a personal-best 15 points and tied his career high in rebounds with 10. He shot 4-for-6 from the field and 7-for-10 from the free throw line. He has led Cal in rebounding four of the five games this season, boasting nine rebounds twice in addition to his career high of 10. Sander-Frison is averaging 8.6 rpg on the season. Franklin For Three Never mind being a freshman, guard Gary Franklin has no fear with shooting the ball when it is in his hands, particularly when he is standing behind the arc. Franklin is 11-for-39 from behind three-point range. He swished four treys against New Mexico on Nov. 20, part of his season-high 16 points. He is third on the team in scoring at 9.4 ppg and also third on the team in assists with 11. The freshman from Mater Dei High School has started every game this season along with fellow freshman guard Allen Crabbe. Cal's Nonconference Success at Haas Pavilion With a 2-0 record in Haas Pavilion thus far this year, Cal has won 40 of its last 42 nonconference home games, including the last 21 in a row, after the victory over New Mexico on Nov. 20. Cal went 15-1 for the entire 2009-10 season at Haas Pavilion, with the one loss coming against UCLA in overtime. In 2008-09, the Bears were 9-0 in Berkeley against teams outside the Pac-10. Looking back further, Cal was 8-1 outside the conference at home in 2007-08 and 6-1 in 2006-07. Crabbe Gets First Collegiate Double-Double Allen Crabbe earned his first collegiate double-double, the second this season for Cal, when he notched 10 points and 10 rebounds against Notre Dame last Friday. Markhuri SandersFrison secured the Bears’ first double-double in the season opener against Cal State Northridge. Crabbe is averaging 8.0 ppg and second on the team in rebounds at 6.2 rpg. The 2010 California State Player of the Year out of Price High School, Crabbe has also been good on seven of his eight tries from the free throw line. He just missed getting his first doubledouble against Temple last Thursday when he boasted a season-best 12 points and eight rebounds.
