Students partner with local, regional, national and international businesses to produce marketing plans, advertising and promotional plans, customer research, social media plans, event management, and strategic plans. Students will be introduced to domestic and global business operations, economic and cultural factors, political systems, and a survey of marketing within the global economy. Students will have an opportunity to experience entrepreneurship from a variety of angles including traditional business plans for consumable products and services to new methodologies such as “lean start-up” most commonly associated with technology based products. Strategic management tools such as the Business Model Canvas will be implemented as the students develop and sketch out new or existing business models. Participation in local entrepreneurial events such as MECA Challenge and Make48 are encouraged. Be prepared to use your entrepreneurial skills to develop a domestic business with the intention to take it global. Founders, owners, entrepreneurs, leaders of major corporations, small business, and startups in the local community will share their experience and expertise with the students through guest instruction, mentoring, and sponsoring internships. Students will be able to communicate with expert professionals locally and globally, while working as a team member on projects with their companies developing life-long mentoring relationships. Client projects will consist of: • • • • • • • • • • • Strategic & Business Planning Price Strategy Development Market Planning and Market Research for businesses Brand Development Product Development Project Leadership Event planning & management Social media strategy development Advertising Strategy Development Product Selling & Donation Solicitation Other unique client projects PROJECT EXAMPLES • Partner with Clay County Economic Development Council in gathering and analyzing data based on individual surveys of over 100 companies. Students created call lists, made cold-calls and administered the surveys. Students developed individual executive summaries and presented to each city in the county. • Partner with St. Luke’s North Hospital to develop a marketing plan to help promote the Mid America Heart Institute’s Athletic Heart Clinic’s screenings. • Partner with North Kansas City Business Council to create a presentation for the yearly Recognition Luncheon as well as the written program provided to all attendees. Required research of businesses to be recognized, securing photos of the businesses, and writing biographies on the key employees. • Partner with MKS Pipe and Valve Company to populate and implement a customer relationship management (CRM) system. Students used company’s software to organize client’s customer’s information, populating the fields, and testing the program. Once completed the students trained the client’s sales and support staff on how to use the system. • Partner with local start-up company to determine profitability while investigating new product development. During the course of the project students were also requested to create a social media marketing plan with the goal of raising $30,000 in 30 days.
