hat Stomp did for trash cans and what Blast did for
drums is what Tap Dogs has done for tap dancing. Don’t
look for Fred Astaire or Donald O’Connor. Elegant is
not quite the right word for this. Try wild, potent and reckless. Tap
Dogs is a rocking no-holds-barred industrial-strength version of
tap, spawned in an Australian steel town north of Sydney in the
garage of a dance teacher with ver-r-r-r-y different ideas.
What began in Newcastle, Australia, did not stay in Newcastle.
After spending a few years as a machinist, Tap Dogs creator/choreographer Dein Perry decided that show business might be a better
bet. He rounded up his Newcastle dancing mates and launched a
very macho, very contemporary show themed to their very industrial experience.
Performed within a construction site set by designer/director
Nigel Triffitt to the driving score of composer Andrew Wilkie,
Perry’s Tap Dogs emerged as part theatre, part dance, part concert
in an entirely rough, tough, thrumming reinvention of tap. It took
the 1995 Sydney Theatre Festival by storm, and has since played
330 cities worldwide, won awards, sold 12 million seats and shows
no sign of letting up. n

elcome back to Rydell High where, you’ll be pleased to
know, summer love still simmers. Danny Zuko and Sandy
Dumbowski are still here and, even after all these years,
they’re lookin’ good. In fact, they haven’t changed a bit, which goes
to show just how nifty the 50s really were.
Grease is, of course, the word. It is also the fifth longest-running
musical in Broadway history. That, along with the immense
popularity of the 1978 movie starring John Travolta and Olivia
Newton-John, made Grease not only a household name but also
the high school reunion you wish you’d had.
Old kids will still find their thrill on Blueberry Hill.
New kids will love the same thing we’ve all loved
about Grease: the music, the
dancing, the fun and, of course,
the hand-jive. So slick back
your pompadour, smooth
your poodle skirt and
return to the thrilling
days of yesteryear.
Grease. It’s got a
great beat. We give
it a “10.” n

1988 with his Masters in Business
Administration. He began his career
with Combustion Engineering in
Windsor, CT in 1982, and moved
to Maryland in 1992 to assume
the position of Comptroller for
various theatrical productions in
association with Mr. Howey. In his
current position he oversees the
daily operations of all aspects of
management information systems,
finance and accounting. Mr. Kindl
and his lovely wife, Cindy, are the
proud parents of three wonderful children: Stephen, Stacey and
Scott.
NICHOLAS HOWEY (Executive
Producer) has a Ph.D. in Theatre
Arts and studied repertory theatre in
Prague. Together with Kary Walker
he founded the Harlequin Theater
outside Washington DC, which
enjoyed a 20 year run. Nicholas and
the late Larry Shue were subjects
of the play Wenceslas Square written by Shue, directed by Jerry Zaks
and produced at The New York
Shakespeare Theater.
Together
with Kenneth Gentry and Dallett
Norris, Nicholas founded Troika
Entertainment. He is happily married to actress turned real estate
agent, Mary Ellen Nester, the father
of two grown kids “in the biz”
(Jennifer & Christopher) and soonto-graduate high-schooler Florin- all
of whom remind him daily that life
and the theater are as good as it
gets.
RANDALL A. BUCK (Chief
Operating Officer) has produced
over 50 productions all over the
world as Troika Entertainment’s
Chief Operating Officer. Before
rejoining Dr. Howey at Troika in
1999, Mr. Buck was Vice President
and General Manager for Livent in
Toronto. While working for Livent
Mr. Buck managed productions
such as Fosse, Ragtime, Show Boat,
Music of the Night, and Kiss of
the Spider Woman. Randy was a
stage manager for over 20 years,
opening the Phantom of the Opera
Music Box tour and Show Boat! on
Broadway. Since beginning as an
apprentice with The Kenley Players
in the late 60s, Randy has the privilege of working with directors such

Daniel L. Ritchie
T
his issue of Applause
lists our donors for
fiscal year 2010. My personal
thanks goes to each of the
individuals, companies and
foundations that helped us to
achieve our goals last year.
The world has changed—
economic models that worked
for cultural institutions
are being challenged and
we at The Denver Center
are no different. We face
endowments that must be
rebuilt, facilities that must be
not only maintained but also
improved, and funding that
is less secure than it was just
two years ago.
We made a choice for fiscal
2011 to bring you a year of
Denver Center Attractions
(DCA) and Denver Center
Theatre Company (DCTC)
shows that is unsurpassed
in quality, creativity and
inspiration. To do so
required a leap of faith on
the financial side. And so,
I am making the “Ritchie
Challenge.” If others will
give $500,000 in new and
increased gifts, I will be
pleased and proud to match
it with a personal gift of
$500,000. I believe that
the people of the Rocky
Mountain region want
world-class theatre and that
together we can achieve this.
We look forward to
presenting Billy Elliot, West
Side Story, Next to Normal,
9 to 5 and other great DCA
Broadway touring shows in
2011, and the productions
you will see on our DCTC
stages in the months to come
will be second to none. From
Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39
Steps and Bram Stoker’s
Dracula to an adaptation of
Isabel Allende’s novel The
House of the Spirits and the
Pulitzer Prize-winning play,
Ruined, we will share stories
that cross cultures and time
zones.
Finally, our commitment to
Colorado’s children remains
strong. Student Matinees,
family productions, in-school
workshops and Academy
programs for children young
and older will be an exciting
part of our 2010-11 season.
With high expectations
of what we can do together,
I challenge you to become
a donor or increase your
donation to the Denver
Center between now and
June 30, 2011. With equally
high expectations I promise
you a year of theatre you will
not forget. n
