It’s that time of year again and we can hardly contain our excitement for the launch of this new Season. Although this past summer was stellar in our region, we’re excited for what fall brings. As leaves fall, we pick ourselves up and get ready for a year of great Broadway entertainment, and more! You’ve probably heard us talk a lot about VITAL art over the course of the past few years. That’s because we have a strong belief that art and culture are truly vital to our existence. The exciting productions in our Broadway Season, and the myriad of other events here and at our two other historic venues that encompass comedy, music, film, dance, and art generated by local artists from our own community, give us a deeper sense of our world and our place in it. We believe that vital art enlivens our lives and our lifestyles. If you have not gotten a sense of the diversity of programs offered by Seattle Theatre Group, we certainly hope you will take the opportunity to experience some of the amazing art and artists in this season. STG is where you can find arts provocateurs, global masters, cultural icons, and contemporary legends. Contemporary art and issues are prominently reflected in our season this coming year. With the new interest in Cuba, the largest island in the Caribbean with over 11 million inhabitants, we are delighted to host two artists from this land situated just 93 miles off the coast of the US. On October 2, Seattle Theatre Group welcomes the “Adios Tour” of the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club®, at The Paramount Theatre. When people mention the music of Cuba, Buena Vista Social Club is spoken right along with the likes of Bebo and Chucho Valdez, all incomparable legends of the unique sound that is only CUBA! This will be the second time the historic Paramount Theatre plays host to the legendary Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club®, this time as they bid adios. On October 16, we welcome dance and music direct from Cuba with Irene Rodríguez Compañía. A former soloist with Ballet Español de Cuba, Irene has toured Barcelona, Granada, Andorra, Columbia, Guatemala and throughout Mexico. Her company includes 6 dancers and 4 live flamenco and Cuban musicians, to create an evening that traditional flamenco and contemporary dance. We are delighted for the opportunity to present these and a host of other artists who make art vital and lively for all of us. Than you for continuing to be a part of our Seattle Theatre Group family and we hope you enjoy the show! COMEDY MYTHBUSTERS Laughter is the perfect medicine for whatever ails you and we’ve got just what the doctor ordered. On Friday, September 25th, STG presents Ali Wong at the Neptune Theatre for a filming of her upcoming TV special. Since being selected as “The Best Comedian of 2009” by SF Weekly, as well as one of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch” in 2011, Wong has appeared on DAVE ATTELL’S COMEDY UNDERGROUND and LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MYERS. She currently writes for ABC’s new comedy series FRESH OFF THE BOAT. Then, on October 17th, STG welcomes Cameron Esposito to The Neptune. The L.A. based Esposito was named by LA Weekly as one of the Top 12 LA Comedy Acts to Watch in 2013. Cameron is the brains and voice behind revolutionary all-standup podcasts Standup Mixtape (Underground Communique Records) and Put Your Hands Together (aspecialthing records), and is also the founder of the Feminine Comique, the world’s only all-female standup course. There will be no shortage of laughs this Fall as STG’s new season is chalk full of comedic entertainment featuring some of the best stand up comedians today. Check stgpresents.org for a full listing of upcoming events. Take two modestly normal guys, add special effects and science, and you’ve pretty much got the ingredients Jamie and Adam have used to become renowned busters of modern day myths. If you like your myth untouched and in tact, well, this may not be the right choice for a normal evening out. But if you like to see what’s behind some of the things we just automatically take for granted, or if you are just plain curious, this is your cup of tea. This is an all-new live stage show MYTHBUSTERS© - JAMIE & ADAM UNLEASHED, starring Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, co-hosts of the Emmy-nominated Discovery series MythBusters©, and it promises to be an unexpected evening of on-stage experiments, audience participation, rocking video and behind-the-scenes stories. Fans will join Jamie and Adam on stage and assist in their mind-twisting and not always orthodox approach to science. What more could you want in a full evening of entertainment that’s also going to leave you better informed? Check out the curious world of Jamie and Adam as the duo matches wits on stage with each other and members of the audience, Paramount Theatre, December 14, 2015. 18 SEATTLE THEATRE GROUP COMPOSED BY PRODUCED BY DIRECTED BY BILL WHELAN MOYA DOHERTY JOHN McCOLGAN OCTOBER 30–NOVEMBER 1 • THE PARAMOUNT THEATRE 877-784-4849 • STGPresents.org Due to the nature of live entertainment; dates, times, performers, and prices are subject to change. Born out of the desire to marry the unabashed performance energy of rock ‘n’ roll with the broader palette of musical nuances treasured in classical music, Seattle Rock Orchestra (SRO) is a 50+ piece orchestra complete with strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, choir and a rotating cast of guest vocalists. SRO celebrates its fifth season at the Moore Theatre with a re-imagining of their very first Moore show, this time flaunting even more hits, dance tunes and glam rock glory! Before paying tribute to the titular music legend, SRO will open the show with a deeper look into the genre, performing a set of songs by glam rock contemporaries T. Rex and Electric Light Orchestra. Featuring David Bowie songs “Young Americans,” “Let’s Dance,” Life On Mars?” and “Changes,” T. Rex songs “Get It On (Bang A Gong)” and “20th Century Boy,” and ELO songs “Mr. Blue Sky” and “Don’t Bring Me Down,” (with many more hits by all three artists) this will be two glam-tastic evenings of local music at its finest! The 7-month renovation included upgrading the backstage area, exposing the original stage and proscenium, adding state of the art lighting and sound, safety upgrades, and improved patron amenities. This was accomplished while maintaining the historic architectural integrity of the theatre. On September 25, 2011 the newly renovated Neptune Theatre opened to the public featuring local musician Mark Lanegan. In honor of the theatre’s history of showing the Rocky Horror Picture Show, this was also screened on opening and is now shown annually. The opening celebration consisted of over 40 events with a week of free community centered engagements. The Neptune has been voted best music venue in Seattle, and has become a gathering place for people from all walks of life. One of the most popular programs is Nights at the Neptune: A People’s Theatre Joint. Nights at the Neptune lends the theatre to local artists at no cost, to present a work in progress or a completed work. Performances are free to the public as well. This program allows us to make one of Seattle’s remaining historic theatres available to a broad diversity of artists presenting programs that have a race and social justice component. We believe that Nights at the Neptune is a perfect example of how STG honors the importance of making our venues, the people’s theatres. JON BATISTE SNARKY PUPPY An incredibly memorable Neptune Theatre performance was that of jazz master Jon Batiste and his band Stay Human. The Louisiana native blew the audience away with his signature style and unique take on the All-American art form that is jazz music. This month, Batiste will be taking the reigns as bandleader for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Those who were lucky enough to catch his show at the Neptune in 2013 know what kind of musical flavor he will bring to The Late Show. For those that don’t, check out the STG TV segment we produced on Batiste leading up to his unforgettable 2013 performance at The Neptune. You can find it at www.stgpresents.org/stgtv Speaking of music movers and shakers, the instrumental fusion of Snarky Puppy arrives at The Neptune Theatre on November 22nd. Another New York-based group, SNARKY PUPPY is a three-headed creature: first, and most obviously- an original music ensemble. Second- a production team and session band for individual artists. Third, and probably most importantly - SNARKY PUPPY is a group of musicians enthusiastically committed to music education and community outreach. Originally from Denton, Texas, this quasi-collective has gone from the best-kept secret to one of the most respected names in instrumental music. Some of their collaborators include Erykah Badu, Roy Hargrove, Justin Timberlake, and Marcus Miller. These are musician’s musicians, formally trained and precise on a variety of instruments. Although still “underground” in many respects, the band has earned high praise from critical stalwarts like the BBC, Village Voice, Guardian, and Boston Herald, and has performed at some of the best venues and festivals in Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America. Want a taste of the Puppy, check out one of their YouTube videos featuring vocalist Lalah Hathaway. The clip has garnered over 4 million views!
