The Cap History Project –
An Appeal for Greatness
Great Pictures
Dear Cap Alumni:
We are busy completing the second volume of the history of
Cap and Gown described later in this newsletter. Based on information received, we know we are going to produce a
really good book. So what do we need to move this book
from good to great?
Great Section Write-Ups
Many sections have had the enjoyable experience of reconnecting with section-mates to produce highly entertaining and
informative summaries of their undergraduate time in the club.
Taken together, the result is a mosaic of not only what was going
on in the hallowed halls of Cap but also in the University and the
world at large. Everybody of a certain age remembers where
they were when President Kennedy was assassinated, and that
includes Cap members in the early sixties. The Vietnam war was
a watershed event in the late sixties, and the 1971 section vividly
remembers sitting in the Cap tube room watching the draft lottery on TV, which would impact their lives immediately. Of lesser
import for the world, but still great significance for Cap, coeducation came to Cap years before Cottage, Ivy, and TI saw the light.
The seventies write-ups reflect the fortunate decision, as well as
the reality of how women were welcomed into the club. Taken
together, a unique perspective emerges on rapidly changing decades—from politics, to music, to technology. Amidst all of this,
there is a comforting continuity of how much the club has meant
to generation after generation.
We need to complete final editing and get approval from section
members on the telling of your tales. We may have different
views of propriety and do not want to impose the heavy hand
of a censor, but we also want all of our alumni to be in a position
to run for president, without fear of what’s published in the
Cap History!
We’re still missing the write-ups for a few sections, and we want
to give you all a chance to add more memories before it all goes
to press. With a book of this significance, we do not want any
sections to be missing in action or not as complete as others. We
will be reaching out a final time by email to collect more memories
to complete the story. Please take time to provide your feedback.
We’ve just launched a Cap Photo
Contest – read more inside. The Cap
History needs great photos! We have
most of the section pictures, but if we
are missing one for your section, we’ll be reaching out to see
if you can help. We hope that a copy may be hanging in your
den or packed away in a drawer so we can have 100% of the
section photos. While many alumni have already uploaded some
great pictures, we have many sections, particularly those from
the pre-digital age, where we need more pictures. Moving this
book from good to great is largely dependent on coming closer
to our goal of finding a half dozen or so reasonably clear, candid
pictures per section. We hope that you will take the time to dig
through the boxes in the attic, leaf through old Bric a Bracs or
do a quick search of the online Daily Princetonian archives to find
pictures that relate to your section one way or another. Scanning
and emailing them to us, along with a suggested caption would
be truly appreciated.
Great Articles
So far we are including special articles on the staff, the clubhouse, and coeducation. If you have ideas for other subjects you
are willing to write about, please let us know. Similarly, if you have
relevant pictures, please send them on.
Supporting this Great Project
Would you be interested in supporting the Cap History Project?
We plan on selling the books, hopefully in time for the holidays
this year. We anticipate that this will be a break-even effort. The
project could cost the club if we don’t get enough orders — and
it would be great to offer the book at a lower price for young
alumni. If you would like to make a (tax-deductible) donation to
the Cap History Project, you would receive special recognition for
your generosity—all donors will be listed in the book!
Many thanks for the help you have already provided, and let’s
work together to move the Cap History from good to great!
See you at the club,
Tom Fleming ’69, Graduate Board Chair

Bowen Peard ’15, Cap President
Undergraduate
Officers
Hello Cap Alumni!
My name is Bo Peard and I am lucky enough to serve as
Cap President this coming year. Since officer elections
in early February, the other new officers and I have been
getting the hang of our positions with the guidance of
the old officers, the Graduate Board, and our steward,
Dennis Normile. We are all very excited to pick up where
the previous officer corps left off, and to lead Cap and
Gown to another year of illustriousness!
Since the last newsletter, we have added 98 amazing
new members to the club! Bicker took place the week
of February 3rd, and we met 213 bickerees in three sessions. This large turnout, the largest at any club, indicates continued enthusiasm about
Cap. It also demonstrated the effectiveness of the multi-club bicker system, now in its
second year, which allows the bickering of multiple clubs so that bickerees can better
assess their options and find their ideal place on Prospect Avenue.
Thanks to the productive bicker reforms by outgoing Bicker Chair Alec Bingaman, we
were able to discuss every bickeree over the course of three nights. On Friday, February
7th, Cap received 96 new members from the class of 2016 and 2 from the class of
2015 to the Cap and Gown Club. We welcomed these new members with the traditional
“Pickups.” The old officers picked up all new members at 1879 Arch and led them to the
clubhouse to celebrate with Cap’s full membership. Everyone seemed to have a great
time, and the event made us all even more excited to get to know our new club mates.
The new officer corps is already busy planning events and preparing for the year ahead.
In a quick turnaround after bicker, we started the semester off with a Valentine’s Day
Semi-Formal, complete with a diverse array of food truck-style dishes, all served on
skewers. The cheeseburger bombs were out of this world. The event was high-spirited
and well attended, a success attributable to the vision and execution by Social Chair
Hilary Jessup, Dennis Normile, and Chef Greg. We look forward to a spring full of fun
events—nights out in the new taproom, cookouts and s’mores on the back patio, and of
course House Parties.
While Cap thrives internally, the club also remains involved in the community beyond
61 Prospect. Our Community Outreach Chairs have been hard at work in coordinating
Cap’s participation in this year’s ICC fundraiser, Princeton TruckFest. On April 25th, the
town will close Prospect Avenue to traffic and each eating club will host a food truck,
which will serve food to students and community members. This will be a nice way to
gather the broader Princeton community, while raising much needed funds for local
soup kitchens. We are in the process of planning other interactions with the community
outside of Cap—including social gatherings with other clubs—and in early April, we will
be hosting a lunch for a group of schoolchildren visiting Princeton to teach them about
the value of college.
I hope that you are all enjoying a nice spring and that you will visit Cap sometime soon.
We are always thrilled to welcome alumni back to the club, and I encourage you to stop
by whenever you are in the area. I look forward to meeting many of you at Reunions in a
couple of months!

The House Report
By Spencer Jones ’12
Since wrapping up construction on the expansion, the House Committee has focused on
renovating the 1908 building. The changes are exciting and we have completed several
projects already.
We are particularly proud of Cap member and local architect Louisa Bartle Clayton ’93,
Jane Fleming ’00, and our steward Dennis Normile, who redesigned the second floor bathroom. They upgraded the outdated facility, bringing the room in line with the high standards
set in the rest of the club. The highlights of the renovation include oak paneling, a maroon
speckled granite countertop, and floor-to-ceiling partitions which create a comfortable coed
experience. The renovation turned out beautifully and will serve our members and alumni
for years to come.
After the work was done on the second floor, the House Committee engaged Louisa and
her firm, Knight Architects LLC, to outline a few key projects that we could complete over
the next five years. Unfortunately, before her recommendations could be developed, plans
had to be put on hold so that we could make emergency repairs to the chimneys and
third-floor bathroom.
Work is currently underway to finish extensive overhauls to four of the five chimneys after a
survey found that they were structurally unstable. While a brutal winter has slowed construction, the two chimneys with the most damage are slated to be finished by mid-April. The
other two chimneys, which are in less dire straits, should be completed before reunions and
graduation.
Updating the third-floor bathroom was a top priority on Cap’s list of near-term projects.
Much like the restroom on the second floor, the third-floor facility was not designed to be
used as a coed space. Plans to redesign the room with more privacy were already being
put together. However, we found that the showers, which are used by the undergraduate
officers, were leaking into the TV room on the second floor. This discovery forced us to
expedite the project.
Plans to fix the leaks and to design a more coed-friendly space are scheduled to begin this
summer. After absorbing the six-figure costs associated with repairing the chimneys and
renovating the third floor bathroom, our long-term plan had to be reexamined.
We have simplified a number of our projects and put others on hold. Here is a brief look at
what we hope to accomplish in the future:
• Improve our indoor storage by installing a shed behind the clubhouse to expand space.
• Upgrade the windows throughout the 1908 clubhouse to increase functionality, while maintaining the historic character and
elegance of the original design
• Cover the alumni terrace on the side of the club to reduce costs associated with tent rentals during large events as well as
improving the facility for summer bookings
• Refit the taproom with better acoustic equipment, which the undergraduate officers plan to fund out of the social budget
Finally, as we continue to improve our facilities, we want to ensure that the students and staff who use our building are safe at
all times. With this in mind, cameras focused on the entrances and exits and other modern security devices have been installed
throughout the clubhouse in key locations. We will use these tools to protect our investments in the facility and ensure that our
members, alumni, and staff feel secure every time they step into the club.
We are excited for our alumni to see all of the wonderful work that has gone into the building. We look forward to sharing our progress with everyone at Reunions.

Community Outreach Keeps on Truckin’
By Mariesa Lee ’09
Janie Lee ’15 and Katie Bauman ’15 are the new Community Outreach Chairs for
Cap and Gown, and there couldn’t be two better people suited for the job. Janie is
a junior from Walnut, California, majoring in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public
and International Affairs and getting a certificate in African American Studies. Katie is
a junior from Jacksonville, Florida, majoring in Anthropology and getting a certificate
in American Studies. For both of these women, community service is a part of their
identity. They know the value of breaking out of the Princeton bubble and engaging
Cap members in the community beyond the club walls.
Janie Lee ’15 and Katie Bauman ’15
Janie is interested in public education reform as well as education within prisons. As
a result of her interests, she initiated and taught a poetry and public speaking course
at a local prison. On campus, she formerly led the Students for Education Reform
chapter and the Pace Council for Civic Values, which is a student board at the Pace
Center that seeks to promote a culture of active citizenship.
Katie is interested in nonprofits and their varying approaches to service and the
community. She is a mentor in Mercer County’s Big Brother Big Sister program and
is starting a service project with Homefront Family Preservation Center, a shelter for
women and children. On campus, she serves on the Pace Center’s Student Volunteer
Council board, which oversees the weekly service projects run by Princeton students.
Community service dinner at Cap
One of the projects Katie and Janie are working towards as Cap Community Outreach
Chairs is a new Interclub fundraising event – Princeton Truckfest. Truckfest is a
fundraising event that brings the 11 eating clubs together to raise funds for “Send
Hunger Packing,” a Mercer County program that provides backpacks of food for
needy schoolchildren to take home over the weekend. On Friday, April 25th, Prospect
Avenue will be closed to traffic and each of the eating clubs will host a food truck with
all of the proceeds going to “Send Hunger Packing.” University students and members of the community are invited to join in this new Interclub effort to support the
neediest schoolchildren of our local community.
The Cap and Gown community would like to thank Janie and Katie for their leadership and dedication to community service. We
couldn’t be more proud of this year’s Community Outreach Chairs!
Pyne Prize Recipient
Joseph Barrett ’14
Recipient of Moses Taylor Pyne Honor Prize
Cap member Joe Barrett is one of two winners of the 2014 Moses Taylor Pyne Honor
Prize, the highest general distinction conferred on an undergraduate. During his speech
on Alumni Day, Joe thanked Cap and Gown for taking great care of him and feeding
him such delicious food so he could focus on his work!
Joe is from Port Washington, NY, and is a history major pursuing a certificate in South
Asian Studies. He participated in the first year of Princeton’s Bridge Year Program, in
Varanasi, India; is a tutor with the Petey Greene Prisoner Assistance Program; a cofounder of Students for Prison Education and Reform; and a club soccer team member.
Joe, whose thesis explores the government’s role in reducing poverty in the 1960s,
plans to work to develop volunteer-based GED tutoring programs for prison inmates. In
the long term, he hopes to focus on policy issues related to domestic and international
poverty, especially those tied to education and incarceration.
Congratulations, Joe, on this recognition of your accomplishments!

and great bands came to play. In quieter moments, many used the beautiful library as a

While the organized events were fantastic, many of us treasure memories of regular, day-to-day life at Cap. Whether we were studying at the

we spent many wonderful hours at 61 Prospect. We look forward to

ICC (Interclub Council) Releases Results on
Spring 2014 Club Admissions
By Lisa Schmucki ’74, GICC Advisor, and Mark Bur ’08, ICC Advisor
Over the past two years, the ICC (Interclub Council) has been working to improve
the process for joining an eating club and to provide better information for students who are interested in joining.
In the first year, the ICC created a private website to synchronize the process of
joining an eating club for all sophomores and juniors. In the spring of 2013, a new
“multi-club” option was added to the bicker process as well. For the past two
years, students have been able to bicker two clubs from the pool of Cannon,
Cap and Gown, Cottage, and Tiger Inn.
This past year, the ICC created a new public website — princetoneatingclubs.
org — for students to learn more about the clubs, and to more easily compare
the unique characteristics, facilities, and costs of each club. The new website
has had over 8,500 visits since it launched in November 2013.
The goal of these efforts is to to provide better information, to encourage more
students to explore the clubs, to decrease the stress surrounding the process,
and to provide a more positive experience for all students.

All eleven clubs participated in the new synchronized club admissions process
including 6 selective clubs (Cannon, Cap and Gown, Cottage, Ivy Club, Tiger
Inn, and Tower) and 5 open clubs (Charter, Cloister Inn, Colonial, Quadrangle,
and Terrace).

Cap is a fantastic place to host all kinds of parties, events, and
meetings. The club has expanded dining spaces, a beautiful
back terrace, and is fully air-conditioned for summer weddings
and parties.
• Rehearsal dinners
• Retirement dinners
• Engagement parties
• Wedding receptions
• Class reunion lunches and
dinners
• Wedding showers
• Alumni birthday parties
There are spaces for parties large and small, indoors and outdoors. The club is now handicapped accessible with an elevator.
The back terrace fits a 40 x 40 tent perfectly. The club has a
state-of-the art AV and projection system with a giant screen that
pulls down in the new dining room, and a large screen monitor
in the historic dining room. The main dining room has a raised
floor at the end that is perfect for a band, as a stage, or for a
presentation.

Annual Dues and the Annual Fund
Cap and Gown has continued to thrive over the generations
thanks to the devotion and support of our members. Our recent
Capital Campaign is a shining example of that, raising $5.5 million to expand and renovate the club.
As we look forward to the future, we count on your support
through the payment of dues and donations to the Annual Fund.
Operating costs continue to rise, and we want to keep our beautiful clubhouse in mint condition. Here are the ways your support
helps Cap:
• Graduate Dues fund communications with our alumni, such
as this newsletter, and alumni events at the club to keep us
connected with each other.
• The Annual Fund provides funds for ongoing maintenance
and improvements to the clubhouse like chimney repairs and
repairs and renovations to the bathrooms.
• A new restricted Endowment will assure a solid financial foundation for future generations.
If you have not yet paid your annual dues or made a donation to
the Annual Fund, you can do so:
• online at capandgownclub.org
• by using the enclosed envelope. (For tax deductibility, make
your check out to the Princeton Prospect Foundation – Cap
and Gown.)
