Research Paper - Civil Rights
1. Essential Question: What would it be like to be discriminated against or not to be
allowed to follow a dream? To what length would a person go to be able to live his
dream?
2. The Hook: Student will write a paragraph about their life goal(s). Then will be asked
to think about how they would feel if they were told they could not accomplish this or
these dreams due to their appearance or social status. Read poem. Discuss what can
happen to a person who is not allowed to live his dream
3.The Background Information: Give background on A Raisin in the Sun and its author Written by an African-American playwright that presented a radically new representation
of black life, one that was authentic and unsentimental and unflinching in its telling of
what happens when people are told they cannot live their dream.
The play is based on the poem A Dream Deferred written by African-American poet
Langston Hughes. Will give brief biographical information. (Trivia - Raised by
grandmother whose first husband was killed while fighting with John Brown)
4. Knowledge Building: While reading play ask leading questions so student
will understand the actions of the characters - why they act and react the way they do.
Keep referring back to the poem.
5. Product Planning: Paragraph writing . Choose one of the main characters and relate
their actions and reactions to what Langston Hughes asks in the poem “What
happens to a raisin in the sun. What was the characterʼs dream? Did the character
dry up or explode?
