Showcasing YCAC’s Teachers
Before signing up to take a class, you want to see the teacher’s credentials,
right? The opening exhibit of 2011 in Yates Gallery is designed to do just that
for you: five of YCAC’s teaching artists will be in the spotlight.
Dick Kane, a popular Rochester artist, creates in several media. His watercolors, oils, and acrylics of regional landscapes will reflect his penchant for plein
air painting. He will be teaching a winter studio workshop at YCAC on Mondays, 9AM to 12:30 PM, from February 7 through March 14. He encourages
potential artists to try their hands, while he also challenges the “old timers” to
grow.
Sandi Cirillo is a Steuben County artist and teacher working in fibers. She
uses various felting techniques to create semi-abstract pictures, landscapes,
bowls, and other fiber pieces.
Robin Secrest teaches both adult and children’s classes year ‘round at YCAC.
Our Creative Workshop space is always hung with her students’ drawing exercises, paintings, perspectives, color experiments. She will begin an 8-week
adult drawing class February 1 exploring a variety of techniques, compositions
and subjects. Working from still life, photos, and the imagination, basic principles such as line, shape, volume and perspective are discussed but different
creative approaches and expression are the main focus of the class. An afterschool class for students also starts Feb. 1. (See page 5.)
Roger Hyndman has been an artist in residence at Sunny Point, teaching Solar Print-Making. Roger is a practicing artist who is striving to find and record a
balance between the natural environment and the human imprint upon it. His
recent work focuses on recording the harmony and balance that exists between the creative expressions of humans and the majestic forms and beauty
of nature. He explores the use of environmentally-friendly materials and accepted conservation practices in his print-making.
Kathy Wheat leads a monthly Stamping workshop at YCAC, inspiring students
to create original designs and using Stampin’ Up materials. A bridge between
craft and art, polishing the design element brings out the artsy side of students.
The stamping group won’t meet in January, but resumes on February 21. People are welcome to one evening to try it out, but most likely will return for more!
Hunt Country Vineyards will be donating the wine for the reception, Sunday,
February 6, 1:00—3:00 PM. Get a look at these instructors’ talents and sign
up for a class while you’re there.

The mission of YCAC is to enrich the
quality of life of Finger Lakes
residents, artists, and visitors by
providing opportunities for active
participation in the arts.
To this end, we plan,
promote, and develop art programs
and projects; coordinate, schedule,
and publicize events; develop and
maintain physical facilities.
Programs of YCAC are mainly
supported by an annual grant from
the Yates County Legislature, from
commissions collected on Gallery
sales, and by memberships .
To all our Members and FriendsI want to wish you all the best in this
exciting and promising new year!
As I write this I am looking at the past year
and musing upon an interesting mix of impressions. My challenges in filling this role
as Executive Director have been many.
Among them, and truly the most pleasant,
were the associations of faces with names,
while getting to know individual members,
and hearing their interesting stories- I find
we have a diverse, talented and intriguing
group of people at YCAC!
The past year also revealed the ambitious
and extensive array of arts and cultural programming, arts education, artist services and
opportunities we sponsor. In a dynamic way
we foster regional initiatives and community
building... Ultimately, the arts create a 'place'
unlike any other.
The Artist Studio Tour, our full calendar of
gallery exhibitions, a permanent space for
retail sales for local arts, Sunny Point
Artspace, our workshops for all generations,
a new and beautiful website promoting our
programming and regional artists' work, volunteering and individual learning opportunities we provide, the internships with local
colleges, theater programs for elementary
students, partnerships in regional arts festivals, local student shows, awards and scholarships, our Community Arts Grants, from
the Attic Treasures sale, for regional community groups; these are all reasons to be
very proud of being a member of Yates
County Arts Center. Various ways of inclusion in the arts for everyone are what we as
arts providers initiate and support. What a
wonderful mission we have!
Actually, in many ways, this was an anticipatory year, setting loose our collective imagination about where, when, who, and what
we will be in 2011, when we finally have a
home of our own and a space for all our activities under one roof we can call ours.

This Fall, after we obtained our building at
127 Main Street, Penn Yan; volunteers,
with crowbars in hand, set about the renovation process, taking away the layers
(including that era when bad orange carpet
was chic), from the Maxwell Building to
reveal its history and potential. We thank
each of them from our hearts for all the
hours they have put in so far and the dirt
and dust they have endured to bring about
a miraculous transformation! It is going to
be a wonderful place for art for Yates
County and the Finger Lakes!
Of course, we are going to need all the help
we can muster, and we wish to invite
whomever might want to lend a hand to
participate - Call and we will give you
something to do, to share in the fun!
As we proceed in the renovation, we are
planning a phased approach working with
architects, designers, contractors, funders
and members. In practical terms, we envision a time line of both long and short
range goals to create a place for the arts on
Main Street. We are anticipating the completion of our workshop space in the upstairs and a home for offices as soon as
possible during our month of being closed
in January. We simultaneously will tackle
the gallery space downstairs to be able to
inhabit that space early in the exhibit
schedule of 2011, and ultimately have identified some larger capital projects that will
be scheduled afterward.
We are encouraged about our future as
partners with our Main Street neighbors
and friends who welcome us warmly as
fellow retailers and as a cultural anchor
bringing more tourism to the downtown.
Stay tuned and stay warm.

YCAC
Maxwell Building Update:
Renovations have begun!
The first phase of clearing out, pulling down and removal
has started. If you saw the dumpster in front of 127 Main
Street on November 23, that was YCAC’s volunteers
cleaning up.
Note the old picture: as Baldwin’s Bank, it was a 3-story
building! Today those third story window sills can still be
seen on the front brick work. See more renovation photos
on our website, www.YCAC.org/locations.

On March 26, at 1 PM, watch Dick Kane, long time instructor with
YCAC, who always offers an interesting and creative approach to art
and teaching. He will also be offering his winter painting class, a
weekly painting workshop on Mondays, at the YCAC Elm Street Gallery on February 7 through March 14, and will be back in the summer
for his plein air series of classes.
March 12, at 1 pm, brings Roger Hyndman to the gallery to demonstrate mono printing, an exciting creative process for printing a oneof-a-kind print. This is sometimes compared to painting with surprising color, shapes and lines which are produced by the artist using
inks on a plate run through the printing press.
Instructor Kathy Wheat will offer some interesting paper arts and printing classes Saturday February 26th at 1 pm. Learn to make
envelopes and boxes from recycled paper.
( A great way to re- purpose an old calendar!)
On March 5, from 1-2, fiber artist Sandi Cirillo will be
doing a one hour mini workshop demonstrating wet
felting and needle felting. Feltmaking is a process
that combines wool with soap and water to make
absolutely fabulous pieces of art such as felted
bowls, bags, even landscapes.
Instructor Robin Secrest will teach a children’s class, “Paper Adventures in
Art”, from 11- 12 and “Drawing for Adults” from 1-2 on February 12.
Sample the Experience with Free Mini-Workshops
During the "Classy Art Exhibit" opening February 6th at the Yates County Arts Center Gallery on Elm Street Penn
Yan, our YCAC workshop teachers, who are our invited exhibitors, will be previewing their wonderful workshops
scheduled to be held during 2011, by giving everyone a small taste in a MINI WORKSHOP of approximately 1 hour.
Instructors will be holding demonstration workshops on Saturdays during February and the first 2 weeks of March,
where you can participate and even take away a small piece of art as you learn! Workshops are free and open to the
public and all are welcome.

Happy New Year.
It is amazing to me how the level of promise and hope appears as we begin another year. This year brings me to
my second term as Board President and a term that holds more growth and look to the future than seems quite
possible. And yet as another year draws to a close and before we usher in the new one I want to take the opportunity to say Thank you.
Thank you to Board members, both past and present, the Executive Director, the many members who support our
organization and of course the amazing number of volunteers for their time and expertise. Thank you for all the
hard work within your roles and the many times each of you step up and support another role. While your talents
are always appreciated, your contributions to this year were truly above and beyond the usual dedication. With
your help we have bought and begun the remodeling of a new building, prepared to move from a busy well used
smaller space full to the top with supplies and still continued to support the art and artist needs of the community.
Sunny Point has begun its first steps in new programming and new residencies and many new art workshops and
artists from far and near have enjoyed the hospitality of the lake property. Even more important all of the art
classes’ feedback has been positive and frequent.
In these tough economic times we face a number of challenges but everyone’s hard work,
determination and courage to continue offering exhibits, classes and events has helped us
fulfill our objectives and to continue to meet our mission.
You have all been the picture of community spirit this year and I am very excited about the
work we will complete and the contributions that we will make in the future. Enjoy the festivity of a new year and celebrate our successes with each other. See each of you in 2011.

Two Join YCAC Board
At its December meeting, the YCAC Board of Directors welcomed two new members, Tammy
Ladd and Greg Blessing.
Greg tells us: I was born in NYC and raised in northern New Jersey. I moved to Wayne, NY in
1976. While I am not an avid art enthusiast, I appreciate all forms of art. I have always enjoyed the art of photography. I was a member of the Village of Penn Yan’s Historic Commission for about four years. I have been involved in construction and food service for over forty
years. Hopefully some of my life experiences can help YCAC accomplish some of their goals.
From Tammy: I have lived in the Penn Yan area for about 20 years after growing up in the
Corning area. I've always had an interest in the arts but did not take it seriously until 10 years
ago when I went back to school and received a degree in fine arts and I have been painting in
oil ever since. I look forward to this new phase in the YCAC and am proud to be a part of its
growth.

Spotlight on Volunteer Joyce Herbert
Joyce and husband Glenn found a getaway cabin near Branchport in 1974. In 2000
they decided it was time to live in their favorite community and built a year round home
here. Joyce worked for 26 years in nonprofit fund development at the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, George Eastman House, and Keuka College and volunteers as
Secretary for the Bluff Pont Association. She retired 4 years ago and at the recommendation of friend and YCAC member, Bev Oben, got acquainted with the Arts Center.
Since then she has enjoyed participating in the Center’s volunteer program, meeting
other volunteers and exhibitors, and of course, the exposure to all the beautiful local
creations showcased here. Reviving a long time interest in sewing and crafts, she now
makes beaded jewelry and tiny silk purses. Joyce and Glenn have two children and 5
grandchildren all living in the Rochester area.
