SPANISH AMERICAN WAR NEWSPAPER
Essential Question: Why did the US go to war against Spain in 1898, and why
was the outcome significant?
You are going to learn about the events that led to the Spanish-American War and examine how the war and its aftermath reflected the
new role of the United States as a world power.
You will be creating the front page of a newspaper using several images and articles that you write as you respond to parts of Chapter
5 Section 2 and the additional reading you have been provided.
Your Newspaper must include the following:
*A Title
*A picture accompanying each article.
1. A letter to the editor expressing your feelings about the coverage in the New York World and New York Journal of events in Cuba.
(Chapter 5, Section 2- pages 145-151); Additional Reading
Your letter should include:
-your thoughts on the accuracy of these stories
- details explaining the events happening in Cuba and the beginning of the rebellion
-your ideas on the coverage of these event as an effort to keep Americans informed
-the term reconcentration camps.
2. A lead story sensationalizing the publication of the de Lome letter and the explosion of the USS Maine in order to fuel public anger
toward Spain. (Chapter 5, Section 2- pages 145-151); Additional Reading – you will need to use this for the de Lome letter (section 3)
Your story should include:
-the basic details of each incident
-attempts to encourage Americans to press the US Government into war with Spain
-the terms de Lome letter and USS Maine
3. A report from the battlefield as if you were a war correspondent. (Chapter 5, Section 2- pages 145-151); Additional Reading
Your report must include:
- details of the various battles taking place in Cuba on both fronts
-reports of casualties
-the terms Rough Riders and San Juan Hill
4. Next to the image provided, a caption for the cartoon in which you describe the events that prompted the cartoonist to draw it. (CH 7
Section 2 273-274)
Your caption must include:
- an explanation of each character in the cartoon and who each represents
-the terms Platt Amendment and Anti-Imperialist League
5. A story explaining the troubles in Puerto Rico and the Philippines. (Chapter 5, Section 2- pages 145-151); Additional Reading
Your story must include:
- the trouble with the government in Puerto Rico; details about the debate of American
citizenship in Puerto Rico
-Details of the rebellion in Philippines
You will also be graded on: 1)neatness 2) accuracy 3) spelling and grammar 4) detail
