AP Latin IV- Caesar/Vergil Magistra Parsinen The AP Latin IV course is a course which emphasizes reading, translating, understanding and interpreting orginial Latin passages. It is equivalent to the fourth through sixth semesters of college Latin. *AP students may receive college credit for successfully passing the Latin AP exam. However, some colleges and univerisities may not accept AP credits. Check with your college/university to see what credit if any you will receive for passing the AP Latin exam. Course Objectives and Goals By the end of AP Latin 4, students will: • read Latin passages aloud with proper classical pronunciation and to enhance comprehension of the Latin language. • translate selections of Caesar’s Gallic War and Vergil’s Aeneid as literally as possible into polished English. • write critically and analytically about the translations and readings with appropriate references to rhetorical, stylistic, and metrical devices. • comprehend and translate Latin at sight from authors including but not limited to: Livy, Tacitus, Augustus, Horace, Ovid, Catullus • appreciate the historical, social, political and cultural context of the translations and readings, and make connections to their own culture and time. The multiple choice section includes approximately 50 questions in the following categories: • (approx. 20 questions) Syllabus Reading Vergil & Caesar • (approx. 30 questions) Sight Reading: Poetry & Prose Section 2: Free ResponseThe time allotted for this section includes a 15-minute reading period and 1 hour and 45 minutes of testing time. The format is as follows: • Vergil Translation- 1 passage • Caesar Translation- 1 passage • Analytical Essay- 1 prompt • Short Answers Vergil or Caesar- 5-7 questions • Short Answers Vergil or Caesar- 5-7 questions Assessment 40% Tests 35% Quizzes 25% Daily Work/Homework Six Week Average 80% 12 Week Average 20% Final Exam Semester Average Tests • Practice AP tests. Once every 3 weeks, you will have a test. These tests will be patterned after the AP test. These tests will cover grammar, translation, literary devices, scanning, and questions on the passage’s thematic and structural content. • Essays on tests. In your essay you will examine the social, political, cultural and historical context of the literature selections. • Weekly Sight Translation tests. Multiple Choice tests over a passage of prose and a passage of poetry that you have not previous seen in class or for homework. You will have a sight translation test every week. Again, these are patterned after the AP test. Quizzes/ Daily Work/Homework • Daily warm-ups will include opportunities to practice the scansion of dactylic hexameter and to practice reading Latin at sight • Comprehension Quizzes over required English readings will be given as appropriate within the curriculum • • • • • Grammar review and vocabulary quizzes will be given weekly. It is extremely important to memorize the “must know” vocabulary lists for Caesar and Vergil. You will have passages to complete both in class and outside of class every day! Come to class prepared. Translate your readings prior to arriving to class and be ready to discuss/ ask questions. It is imperative that you are an active participant in the class. Prepare your assignment twice. Translate the passage the first time looking up vocabulary and analyzing the grammar. Then retranslate/reread to see if you comprehend the meaning of the passage. Take excellent notes during the class discussion of the assigned lines. As you prepare your daily assignments, keep a list of names, place names, epithets, mythological names and other titles.
