SUMMARY SMARTteam: Students Managing Anger and Resolution Together (SMARTteam), formerly titled SMART Talk, is a computer-based, violence prevention program that is designed to teach participants anger management, dispute resolution, and perspective taking. EVIDENCE Results from a randomized controlled trial demonstrated short-term effects of the program (i.e., 4 months post-baseline) by reducing beliefs supportive of violence and increasing intentions to use nonviolent conflict resolution strategies. However, the study failed to find effects on self-awareness, confidence in using nonviolent strategies, or self-reported aggressive behavior. COMPONENTS SMARTteam is designed to provide students with the knowledge and tools to help resolve conflicts, increase social competency, and improve decision making. Students can use the program in pairs or individually, and the modules can be run successively or independently. Activities cover a variety of topics. Anger Management; Dispute Resolution; Perspective Taking; Triggers and Fuses; and Mediation. Each module includes games, activities, graphics, and cartoons. In addition, interviews with teen mediators that endeavor to teach youth how to control anger, how to negotiate and compromise, and how to recognize others' perspectives are used. For example, "What's on THEIR mind" is similar to a game show and demonstrates perspective taking. PREVIOUS USE As of 2006, SMARTteam had been implemented in 650 schools across the United States. www.militaryfamilies.psu.edu Clearinghouse@psu.edu 1-877-382-9185 May 2014 This material is based upon work supported by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Office of Family Policy, Children, and Youth, U.S. Department of Defense under Award No. 201048709-21867 developed in collaboration with The Pennsylvania State University.
