Employability at the top of the
agenda
Employment of Business School students
in
graduate
jobs
has
increased
significantly this year as we continue to
focus on work placement and internship
opportunities, as well as a skills
development in the ‘Employability
Conference’ on the 11 March 2014. We
are also seeing more engagement with
experiential learning through business
simulation. New for 2014 is the ‘Risk
Manager’ software which gives a real
flavour of the high pressure city dealing
room. These activities are becoming an
integral part of our programmes.
Director of School
Learning and Teaching
This year the Business School made a
significant investment in online resources
from
the
Chartered
Management
Institute and the BPP across business and
accounting programmes.
Our aim is to become an approved
Chartered Centre for the CMI. To this
end, we are currently finalising our 2nd
year degree modules, which will enable
students to gain CMI Certificates or
Diploma.
City Connections
Director of the Business School, Dr
Heather
McLaughlin,
was
recently
installed as Master of the Worshipful
Company of World Traders at a ceremony
at the Ironmongers’ Hall in the City of
London. Her principal guest at the
banquet was Alderman Alan Yarrow
(pictured below) who is Chairman of the
Chartered Institute of Securities and
Investments.
CCCU Business School has been working
with the Institute over the last two years
to offer an Investment Advice Diploma,
which is now embedded into the
undergraduate Accounting and Finance
degree programme. Alan is a key figure
in the financial services sector and is in
line to be the Lord Mayor of the City of
London in November.
Work Placements
We are pleased to announce that
Medway Community Healthcare, Keel
Toys, the Royal Automobile Club and
Bromley
Healthcare
have
already
guaranteed
to
provide
year-long
placements, which are currently being
advertised. The target is to secure a
minimum of 5 guaranteed placements for
students, of which 4 have already been
agreed.
There is now a section of the Business
School
website
for
employers,
www.canterbury.ac.uk/employerplaceme
nts. Although currently in its basic form,
the site will give a good idea to
employers of what we are looking for,
and provide them with a point of contact
with
the
Placements
Manager.

Business
Challenge
For the fifth time in a row, students of
the Business School are competing in the
IBM Universities Business Challenge. A
record number of 21 teams have been
entered this year, including 3 teams from
our Broadstairs campus. The first part of
the competition, an online business
simulation, was played over a 5-week
period during October and November,
where each of our teams competed
against 7 teams from other universities.
As in previous years, our students rose to
the challenge and five of our teams are in
the regional semi-finals to be held late
February/early March 2014. Good luck to
our teams!

Research and Knowledge
Exchange
Call for Papers - Seascapes:
Cultural Life of Seaside Towns
The
The COaST (Cultural Offers at Seaside
Towns) research group, based in the
Business School, will be holding their 2014
conference, Seascapes: The Cultural Life of
Seaside Towns at the Turner Contemporary
Gallery in Margate on 28th May 2014. We
aim to publish a selection of papers from
this conference, and are now inviting
proposals
for
contributions.
The conference will address the role and
value of the creative and cultural industries
at English coastal towns, considering the
ways
that
material
and
cultural
interventions contribute to patterns of
economic and social change. We consider
culture and creativity in the widest sense of
those words, including architecture and
design, live performance, the visual arts,
festivals, food and restaurants.
We invite research papers that address
these issues, and anticipate a multidisciplinary
conference
that
will
encompass a range of perspectives,
including business and economics,
sociology,
tourism
studies,
social
geography, cultural and media studies,
social history, and the history of design
and architecture.

KTP Awards
A partnership formed to drive innovation
in the charity sector has won a
prestigious
award
at
this
year's
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP)
Awards.
Lynn Morris, Undergraduate Programme
Director (HRM) at the Business School
said:
"We entered into the partnership with
KCFN (now incorporated in CXK Ltd) to
help facilitate the change from grant
dependency to a sustainable business
enterprise which generates revenue
through
commercial
activities.
The KTP was essentially about
‘productising’ core activities, supporting
the development of a commercial
training
centre
and
embedding effective business processes
to enable the organisation to move
forward in a strategic, coherent way”.

This started in November with the first

provides the School
with
a
great
opportunity to create
brand awareness and
international reach in
a competitive market.
Blake Hall College is an approved partner
of Canterbury Christ Church University as
the first independent HE Provider.
Brink Gardner, MD of Blake Hall College
said upon signing the Agreement with
