MARKET PREVIEW
US: U.S. stocks rose, after the first weekly loss for the S&P’s
500 Index in 2012, as Greece approved austerity plans to
secure rescue funds.
Asia: Asian stocks fell, trimming yesterday’s gains, after
Moody’s Investors Service cut the debt ratings of six European
countries including Italy, Spain and Portugal, reviving concern
about the region’s debt crisis.
India: Sensex ended a lackluster session in the green as bulls
took a breather after the sharp rally beginning January 2012.
The market discounted positive cues from global peers after
the Greek government approved austerity measures to secure
bailout funds to avoid default. Market is expected to open on
weak note today and likely to take further direction from
inflation number.
Economy: Germany and the European Commission welcomed
Greek approval of the austerity steps demanded for a financial
lifeline, suggesting euro finance chiefs will pull Greece back
from the brink when they meet in two days. The Greek
parliament’s backing “is a crucial step forward toward the
adoption of the second program,” EU Economic and Monetary
Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said. “I’m confident that the
other conditions, including for instance the identification of the
concrete measures of 325 million euros ($430 million), will be
completed by the next meeting” of finance ministers.
Japan’s economy shrank an annualized 2.3 % in the 4th quarter,
more than economists estimated, as slumping exports
undermine a recovery from last year’s record earthquake. The
contraction compared with the median forecast for a 1.3 %
decline in a Bloomberg survey. Growth was a revised 7 % in the
previous quarter, the Cabinet Office said in Tokyo.
Construction of multifamily units will lead the U.S. building
industry again this year, allowing housing to contribute to
growth for the first time in seven years. Work will begin on
about 260,000 apartment buildings and townhouse
developments in 2012, up 45 % from last year and the most
since 2008, according to a senior economist at BoA.
Commodities: Oil fell from the highest price in almost five
weeks on speculation that crude supplies are rising in the U.S.
and demand for fuel may falter as Europe grapples with lower
credit ratings.
Currency: The yen and dollar gained versus most of their major
counterparts after Moody’s Investors Service cut ratings for
European nations including Italy, Spain and Portugal, boosting
demand for safer assets.

ANZ bank in Australia to slash 1,000 jobs; freeze senior
executives' pay
ANZ Bank announced it will slash some 1,000 jobs in response to
a tougher global environment as profits are squeezed by higher
funding costs and lower demand for financial services. The move
comes barely a week after fellow banking giant Westpac
confirmed it will axe up to 550 jobs to protect its profits while
some 170 positions at the Australian arm of the Royal Bank of
Scotland are also expected to go. (ET)
Rolls-Royce opens largest Asian facility
Aircraft engine giant Rolls-Royce opened its largest Asian facility
in Singapore on Monday as it looks to capitalise on the region's
booming aviation sector. The Rolls-Royce Seletar Campus will be
the only facility outside of the firm's Derby plant in Britain to
assemble, test and produce Trent 900 and Trent 1000 engines,
the firm said. (ET)
Samsung Heavy wins $2.7 bln order in Australia
South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries has won a 3.05 trillion
won ($2.7 billion) contract to build an offshore gas processing
facility in Australia. The facility, expected to be ready by the
fourth-quarter of 2015, will be the world's largest offshore plant,
a spokesman said. It is part of a joint gas development project
between Japan's Inpex, which has a 76 % stake, and French
company Total S.A., which holds the remaining stake. (ET)
Japan approves $8.9 bn aid to Tokyo Electric Power to
compensate victims of Fukushima tragedy
The Japanese government approved a fresh $8.9 bn in aid for the
operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant to help it pay
compensation to those affected by reactor meltdowns. The
decision to release 690 billion yen came after Tokyo Electric
Power in December revised up its estimate of what it would need
to compensate victims of the worst nuclear accident in a
generation to 1.7 trillion yen from 1.01 trillion yen. (ET)
Apple emerges as top American brand: Study
Apple Inc has the best image of any American company, scoring a
record high in a new reputation study, while financial institutions
filled the ranks of the worst. The Cupertino, California company
raced passed last year's brand champ in the poll, Google Inc.
Banks and other Wall Street institutions, meanwhile, plummeted
to alarmingly low levels in the survey. (ET)
