MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear new arrivals and returning Western Students,
Welcome to the Society of Graduate Students (commonly
known as SOGS). It’s my pleasure, on behalf of the
Society’s Executive and Staff, to welcome you into our
student union, which offers services, social activities and
advocacy for Western graduate students. SOGS recently
launched a new website here at www.sogs.ca. It’s an
important resource to find out news about the Society,
including the monthly newsletter and most recent Council
package. If you have questions, I can be reached by email
at sogs.president@uwo.ca. I also have a space at the
SOGS Office in UCC 260.
I encourage you to take full advantage of this day planner, but also make sure to learn more
about the SOGS health plan and to pick up your bus pass. I hope to see many of you during
department and/or SOGS orientations, or later on at the Grad Club (in the basement of
Middlesex College). I encourage you to take the opportunity to learn more about our various
committees and activities and join in—it’s your Society after all!
As Local 47 of the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), SOGS embodies many values of
student unionism via its role as an advocate for graduate student needs. The CFS (which
represents Local 47 in Ontario and nationally) advocates for students across Canada. You can
find their latest campaign information on the SOGS website. At Western, we’ve organized a
number of campaigns over the years. Last year SOGS campaigned on the issue of Access
Copyright, an agreement Western had signed which levied unfair fees upon students for access
to copyrighted materials. We are pleased that Western decided not re-sign this agreement this
past June. Another initiative is a campaign on Post-Residency Fees—these represent tuition
reductions after major milestones are completed in a degree (coursework, comprehensive
exams or first draft status). These types of reductions, which exist in many Canadian
universities, used to exist in Ontario, and we would like to see them return. These are two
examples of projects SOGS has undertaken in past years, and ultimately, the future of SOGS
advocacy will be in your hands.
SOGS expresses itself in many ways. It of course all begins with all of you, the members of the
Society. SOGS also has a Council that meets monthly, to which I encourage you to elect—and
become nominated to stand as—Councillors. Each department can elect a certain number of
Councillors, and you should ask your department student associations about the process. The
Society also has a number of committees, which serve to engage students in a variety of
Society projects and initiatives, relevant to all the services and advocacy aspects of SOGS.
Joining a committee is easy! Don’t hesitate to write to me and ask how to start participating.
In short, whether you are new to Western or a returning colleague, SOGS is your Society and
we are committed to making your time here a worthwhile and engaging experience. Don’t
hesitate to use of services to the fullest, to participate in our many activities and to support
efforts to advocate for graduate students here, around Canada and the world.
Have a wonderful year,
Kevin Godbout

SOGS offers various forms of financial
assistance. Programs are funded by the
membership, administration fees, and surplus
revenues generated by the Grad Club.
Emergency Loan Program
The Society disperses emergency loans of up
to $1,000 per application. These are needsbased loans secured through a stringent
screening process. Loans must be repaid
within the term. Upon receipt of a loan,
recipients are required to submit postdated
repayment cheque(s). Students with more
complicated financial needs should seek
appropriate support from sources outside the
Society.
Grad Club Bursaries
Grad Club Bursaries of $500 are awarded
three times annually to full-time Society
members. The awards are based on
demonstrated financial need. Applications for
these bursaries are available through the
Graduate
Student
Portal
at:

Applications must be completed and returned,
with original receipts, to the SOGS office by
the last business day of each term.
Travel Subsidies
Subsidies are awarded to a maximum of $400

On-campus events (conferences, lectures)
bring external speakers who present their
research and scholarship to Western grad
students. Research Western, SOGS, and the
SGPS collaborate on a jointly-administered
fund to provide aid for these events. Funding
applications are due at least one month in
advance of the event. Any member of the
academic university community engaged in
providing support for graduate student
research and scholarship is eligible to apply.
Details about application requirements and
accompanying forms are available on the
SOGS website. To search all graduate awards
by faculty or program, use the search engine
on the Donor Funded Award page on the

SOGS ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Graduate Student Teaching Awards
Each year, undergraduate students recognize
outstanding graduate student Teaching
Assistants by nominating them for a Teaching
Award. Twenty $500 awards are presented
annually to five graduate students in each of
the four academic divisions: Arts &
Humanities, Biological Science, Physical
Sciences, and Social Sciences. Award
recipients are selected by the GSTA
Committee. Both nominees for and recipients
of the award are recognized at a reception
held each year. The awards are sponsored
jointly by the Society of Graduate Students
and the UWO PSAC Local 610.
Western Research Forum
The annual WRF, established in 1987, is a
multi-disciplinary conference organized by the
SOGS Academic Committee. The conference
features both poster and oral presentations
from graduate students in all the academic
divisions: Arts & Humanities, Biological
Science, Physical Sciences, and Social
Sciences. The WRF aims to appeal to a
diverse group of academics and invites all
University members to see their colleagues’
work. Presentations are judged and prizes
awarded for the best papers and posters in
each program category.
Western Graduate Review
The Western Graduate Review has recently
been remodeled to encourage more graduate
student participation. We're moving from a

THE GRAD CLUB
Dear Graduate Student,
On behalf of myself and the employees, we would like to extend an invitation to all
Grad Students to the Grad Club. We are constantly trying to improve our food, service and
ambience in order to make your visit a pleasant and enjoyable experience.
We serve great food for the best value on campus with a wide variety of vegetarian
dishes and daily specials. Our kitchen operates from 8AM – 11PM Monday to Friday and 8AM –
10PM during the summer months serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. We offer daily lunch
specials: an East Indian buffet on Wednesdays, Create your own Pasta on Thursdays and a
Themed buffet on Fridays. During the warmer months we offer a BBQ on the patio instead of
the Themed buffet. We serve all day breakfast and lunch on Saturdays from 11AM – 2PM.
The Bar features one of the best selections of draught beer that the city has to offer as
well as a great variety of spirits, wine and non-alcoholic drinks. Our facilities allow us to host
functions for up to 200 people such as Christmas parties, birthday parties, retirement parties,
weddings, thesis defense parties, receptions and much more.
Every Tuesday evening the Grad Club host a trivia night that is well attended by Grad
Students, open mic on Wednesdays and the music of Rick McGhie on Thursdays. We also
feature a variety of promos during the course of the year and show most sporting events on one
of our big screen TV’s. You can find out more about the Grad Club and upcoming events on our
website at www.uwo.ca/sogs/gradclub/.
The Grad Club is owned and operated by SOGS at no cost to Graduate Students. The
revenue from the Grad Club helps fund bursaries that are available exclusively to Grad
Students. Supporting the Grad Club is supporting Graduate Students. If you have any thoughts
or suggestion to improve the Grad Club, please feel free to contact me or the Grad Club
committee. This committee which advises SOGS and the Grad Club management meets once a
month regarding our operations. We are committed in being financially stable, environmentally
responsible and are always looking for new and fresh ideas, so get involve and help us achieve
our goals.

CANADIAN FEDERATION OF STUDENTS
STUDENTS
WORKING TOGETHER
Dear Members,
As a member of the Canadian Federation of
Students you are united with over 500,000
students across Canada.
The strength of the student movement is more
than just numbers. Our strength comes from working together—across the
country, throughout the provinces, and within our campuses. For more than
thirty years, students across the country have worked together towards our
common goals. Together, we continue the fight to reduce tuition fees and student
debt, for safer campuses free from all forms of violence and oppression, and for
more sustainable campuses and communities.
Government programs that benefit students, such as the Canada Student Grant
Program, are the direct result of well-organized, united efforts on the part of
students. Yet students still collectively owe more than $15 billion in federal
student loans, and tuition fees have increased once again this year in almost
every province. In the face of governments downloading the cost of postsecondary education onto students and their families, we must continue to draw
on the strength of our unity, and send a clear message to government that
affordable, accessible post-secondary education must be made a priority.
I strongly encourage you to make the most of your time on campus, and join
the fight for high-quality, universally accessible post-secondary education.
In solidarity,
McCormick

TUITION FEES
IN ONTARIO ARE
THE HIGHEST IN
CANADA
Tuition fees remain the most significant
barrier that students face when
trying to access post-secondary
education. Students in Ontario pay
the highest average tuition fees in
Canada. High fees not only deter many
low- and middle income people from
pursuing a college or university
education, they negatively influence
the educational, career and life
choices made by those who do
attend.
The Liberal
government is again
enabling fees to
increase by 3% to 5%
this year
Since 2006, when the
provincial government
cancelled the tuition fee
freeze that was in place for
two years, tuition fees in
Ontario have risen by up to
80 per cent. The exact
amount depends on the
type of study and program,
but fees have climbed at
three times the rate of
inflation over the past eight
years. Despite promising to
reduce tuition fees by 30 per
cent to get elected in 2011,
the Liberal government is
again enabling fees to
increase by three to five per
cent this year.

PSAC LOCAL 610 – UWO TEACHING ASSISTANTS &
POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATES UNION
PSAC Local 610 is a chartered local of the Public Service Alliance of Canada. They represent
two bargaining units: teaching assistants (TAs) and postdoctoral associates (PDAs) at Western.
TAs and PDAs establish the priorities and policies of Local 610 while adhering to the
constitution of the PSAC. Through periodic negotiations with the University, PSAC Local 610
establishes a Collective Bargaining Agreement that defines working conditions, compensation,
and benefits for each bargaining unit. PSAC Local 610 works to ensure that all members are
aware of their rights under this agreement, and that the terms of the agreement are honoured by
the University. To supplement the SOGS Health and Dental Plan benefits, PSAC Local 610
provides additional support for members through various funding programs: the extended health
plan (EHP), annual scholarships, bursaries, and the food bank. All union members are eligible
and there are no additional fees for these programs. For more information about the local or
benefit programs, please visit the website or read the handbook available in the PSAC Local

Western Foot Patrol is a free service to
promote safety and deter crime on the
Western and affiliate college campuses.
WFP provides a safe and secure
environment for students, faculty, and
staff. Its mission is to raise awareness of
personal safety issues, deter crime
through visible patrols, and provide safe
escorts to community members. This
approach to safety focuses on students
helping students, engaging student
volunteers with the direct provision of
services and creating a sense of
ownership and responsibility. WFP and
the Campus Police operate the Work
Safe Program. This service is free of
charge and is open to anyone who will
be working late on campus. Call to
register with the program and when
you’re ready, call the service for your
escort. This program normally operates 7
days a week from 6pm–6am, and from
9pm–6pm in September, on holidays,
and during exam periods. Participants
must register before using the program.
