Noor Ul Islam
Primary School
Our Primary School introduced a few
new competitions this year. So far we
have had a Photography, Baking and
Mastermind competition.
The idea behind having the
photography and baking competitions
was to encourage parents and
children to work together and enjoy
spending quality time together. As
most parents live a busy life it is
sometimes evident that children miss
out on the opportunity to spend some
quality time together and hence the
photography competition gave an
avenue for parents to explore their
surroundings whilst on holiday and
allow their children to ‘snap’ away
capturing some special moments.
As you can see from the top three
pictures from KS1 and KS2 (also found
on our website) they quality of the
pieces were very high, masha’Allah.
The baking competition consisted
of two heats. The first heat required
children, with their parents, to create
a sweet dish and compete against
their class mates. Dishes were judged
by the class teachers and winners
from each year group would go on to
the final round. We had such a huge
response from parents which was very
pleasing. At the end of the day we had
a magnificent cake sale which raised
much needed funds for the school.
In the baking competition final we
split the competition into Reception
Class and KS1 (Years 1 and 2) and KS2
(Year 3, 4, 5 and 6). Children had to
bake a savoury dish and some of the
dishes on display were truly amazing!
Masha’Allah.
We are in the process of completing
the Mastermind competition which
encourages children to read a book
and try to comprehend every single
aspect of the book. Each child will then
be asked ten questions on the book
and the child with the most correct
answers gets to the finals where they
will be questioned in assembly!
We have more competitions coming
up including our first ever Spelling Bee
competition, insha’Allah.
Aalimah Class Update
With the grace of Allah Noor ul Islam Aalimah classes started the year with a total of 48 students. With an increase in the number
of students enrolling we are pleased to say with the grace of Allah the students displayed great commitment and interest toward
their studies and have therefore managed to sit mid-year exams achieving very good results. We are looking forward to a fruitful
end to the year with a graduation ceremony for our final year students planned for June 2013 InshaAllah.

Noor Ul Islam Pre-School
Noor ul Islam pre-school has been full
of activity as always. In December last
year the children and staff were busy
rehearsing to get ready for the end
of term school play. This anticipated
performance was eagerly awaited by
many of the parents and as the curtains
opened up there were plenty of ‘oohs’,
‘ahhhs’ and ‘Maa shaa Allah’.
Following on from this was the
traditional food sale. On offer were an
array of delicious foods all donated by
our kind parents to help raise funds for
the pre-school.
A ‘celebrity’ visit was on the cards
for the pre-School, the well-known
nasheed artist Junaid Jamshed made
his visit on Wednesday 21st November
2013 the kids were curious and excited
and asked the respected brother many
questions, some of them enjoyed the
8
nasheeds they heard and a few initiated
singing their own nursery rhymes to
him which he was very impressed by.
As per our parent/carers request from
the previous term we were fortunate to
have secured a trainer to come in and
deliver a ‘Confident Parenting Course’.
The course enables parents to reflect
on their parenting skills and think about
how they can improve for the benefit of
their children. Alhamdulillah the course
was oversubscribed, and we have
managed to secure more dates for the
course to run again during the summer
term.
In amongst all the daily activities the
children have been learning cooking
skills through the help of kind parents
volunteering their time and knowledge
to teach the children how to cook
delicious foods such as, scones, pizzas,
and biscuits. In addition to this the preschool has started to compile for sale a
cook book with the children’s favourite
recipes. The cookbook will contain an
array of multi-cultural recipes but also
some wonderful memories that parents
can look back on with their child. Inshaa Allah the books will be on sale in
March. If you would like a copy for your
children please email the pre-school on
preschool@noorulislam.co.uk
Looking ahead the pre-school intends
to hold a sisters only pamper and
dinner event in April. The event looks
to raise funds for the masjid and also
allow sisters to come together and relax
for an evening of good food and games!
We ask Allah azza’wajal to accept our
deeds and purify our intentions.

Noor Ul Islam Madrassa Update
The annual full year exams for our
Madrassa students took place in
December.
On 25th January 2013 prize award
ceremony for weekday Madrassa
took place with an attendance
of over 200 people coming to
watch our students recite Quran
and perform Nasheeds and plays.
The Head teacher in his speech
emphasised the need of an Islamic
education, the importance of
parents setting right examples
and practicing the Sunnah of the
Prophet (saw) in our lives.
On 16th February 2013 our Saturday
Madrassa had a prize ceremony.
With only the Saturday before
to prepare the children stood up
in front of parents to put on a
marvellous performance. Some
children recited Quran and others
told stories but the highlight was a
play by our special class consisting
of boys aged 12-16 years. The play
was about a boy who is confused
between good and evil. He received
advice from both his Eeman (Islamic
faith) and Nafs (worldly desires) but
after hearing the intense dialogue
battle it was left up to the audience
to decide the path for the boy.

Acquiring Islamic Knowledge
“...It is only those who have knowledge
among His slaves that fear Allah...”
[Fatir: V28]
“Whoever follows a path seeking therein
knowledge, Allah SWT eases for him the
path to paradise by it.” [Muslim]
‘Ilm is the arabic term for knowledge.
It is that great quality which not only
upgrades mankind, attributes him with
respect and nobility, but when referred
to Islamic knowledge, it also enlightens
the heart with the pure radiance of the
knowledge of Allah the Most High.
In Islam attaining and possessing Islamic
knowledge is what defines one as a
Muslim. Once one has submitted to
Allah the Most High, he becomes bound
to follow His commandments in every
walk of life. Through ‘ilm one recognises
Allah the Most High, through ‘ilm one
become aware of the lawful & the
unlawful & it is through ‘ilm that one
acknowledges what pleases Allah the
Most High & what displeases Him. The
Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings
be upon him) emphasised the obligation
of knowledge stating:
“Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon
every Muslim” [Ibn Majah]
It is therefore, compulsory that each and
every Muslim gains a sufficient amount
of knowledge in order to practise Islam
properly. As a result, it is no surprise that
there are numerous virtues for acquiring
‘ilm.
Allah the Most High promises in Surah
Mujadilah, verse 11:
“Allah will exalt in degrees those of you
who believe & and those who have been
granted knowledge.”
This exaltation can be understood from
16
the following hadith:
“Indeed the ‘aalim, (the learned one),
all that is in the heavens & the earth
supplicate for his forgiveness, even
the fish in the water!” [Abu Dawud,
Tirmidhi]
As the acquiring of Islamic knowledge
is an individual obligation, this can be
fulfilled in various forms and mediums,
be it a lengthy intense form of study
or several short courses of study,
depending upon the individual’s ability
and time commitment.
Of the most successful methods of
lengthy intense study is the highly
recommended traditional Dars-e-Nizami
based Alimah programme. This 5 year
programme offered by Noor Ul Islam
Alimiyyah is a multi disciplinary course
covering the Islamic sciences to develop
a sound understanding of Islamic
law and theology supported by a full
command in the Arabic language.
The course comprises of:
- Arabic Grammer, focusing mainly on
Syntax and Morphology
- Tajweed (Qur’anic intonation)
- Islamic theology/doctrine
- Fiqh (Jurisprudence)
- Principles of Jurisprudence
- Hadith (Prophetic Traditions) & the
Science of Hadith
- Seerah & Tareekh (Prophetic biography
and History)
- Qur’an Translation and Tafsir (Exegesis)
After studying the two vital sciences;
Exegesis of the Qur’an and the Sciences
of Hadith along with secondary Hadith
texts, the whole course culminates in
the final year, in an intensive study of
the core Hadith texts, namely the six
authentic books of Hadith.
Students are also required to perform
regular oratory exercises where they are
expected to deliver lectures to diverse
audiences on contemporary as well as
non contemporary issues in light of the
Islamic principles learnt.
The course also maintains the traditional
system of Ijazah upon graduation, which
is permission from the teacher to the
students to transmit knowledge. Every
scholar is then part of an unbroken
chain of transmission leading back to the
Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings
be upon him).
The benefits of studying the Alimah
course at Noor Ul Islam Alimiyyah are
numerous.
The course equips one with thorough
knowledge of the Qur’an and Sunnah,
a deep understanding of the juristic
laws governing a Muslim’s life, and
great appreciation of the works of our
pious predecessors, providing one
motivation to excel similarly in the field
of knowledge.
Students are immersed in the Arabic
language so they can directly access the
Qur’an, Hadith and classical Islamic texts
in order to enhance their knowledge
both during and after their course of
study.
The teachers and students are
committed to actualise the knowledge
learnt in example and practise, in the
form of well adapted tarbiyah sessions
on a weekly basis. This provides spiritual
nourishment and allows one to focus
on self rectification, the fundamental
objective in life and a core value of Noor
Ul Islam Alimiyyah.
Whether one wishes to serve the
community professionally as scholars,
leaders, and teachers or simply expound
on their Islamic knowledge, the
alimah course at Noor ul Islam offers
a remarkable journey on the legacy
of the beloved Messenger of Allah
(Peace and blessings be upon him).
Darkness to Light
By Shameera Bint Salim-Yusuf Bhoyroo
We say life is too short and
let’s go out and have fun,
Reality check! Yes life is too
short but real pleasure and
true happiness comes in
worshipping our Creator.
We fall into the traps of the
cursed Shaytaan, like evil
actions such as drugs and
alcohol.
“O you who believe,
intoxicants, and gambling,
and altars (idols), and
arrows of chance are
tools of affliction used by
the devil. You shall avoid
him so that you may be
successful.” (Quran 5:90)
This dunya is temporary
and we are here for one
main reason which is to
worship Allah in the most
perfect way.
We need to turn back to
the Deen and follow the
footsteps of our beloved
Prophet Muhammad
(peace be upon him). We
need to stop falling for this
Dunya and fall in love with
our beautiful Deen.
“Allah is the Protector of
those who have faith. He
will lead them from the
depths of darkness into
light. As for those who
disbelieve, their patrons
are the devils: from light
they will lead them forth
into the depths of darkness.
They will be companions
of the fire, to dwell therein
(for ever).” [Qur’an 2:257]
We ourselves need to
change for the better. So
seek forgiveness from your
Lord. We must start off by
sorting out our intentions,
following it up by
performing good actions.
“Truly, Allah does not
change the condition of a
people until they change
what is in themselves.”
(Quran 13:11)
We need to better
ourselves. O Youth! Leave
the streets, it will in
reality cause you sadness,
darkness and unhappiness.
True happiness is
submission to your Lord,
the one who created you.
We are all accountable for
our deeds, remember we
are Muslims and have a
duty to obey Allah. Death
can come at any time. Turn
to Allah before you return
to Him.
“Everyone is going to taste
death, and We shall make
a trial of you with evil and
good, and to Us you will be
returned.” [Qur’an 21:35]

ETIQUETTES OF RECITING THE QURAN
Strive to be sincere when
you learn and recite the
Quran
Abu Hurayra narrated that
the Messenger of Allah said:
“The first man to be judged
on the Day of Resurrection...
is a man who learnt knowledge
and taught it as well as recite
the Quran. He will be brought
forward, and acquainted with his
blessings and he will recognise
them. He will say, “What did you
do for them?” The man will say,
“I learnt knowledge and taught
it as well as recite the Quran for
Your sake.” He will say, “You lie,
rather you learnt knowledge
so it would be said, ‘A scholar!’
and you recited the Quran so it
would be said, ‘He is a recitor!’
and it has already been said.”
Then an order will be given and
he will be dragged upon his face
until he is thrown into the Fire...”
(Related by Muslim)
Apply the teachings of the
Quran
Deem lawful what the Quran
deems lawful, and deem illicit
what the Quran deems illicit.
Obey its commands and avoids
its prohibitions. In the long
narration the Messenger of Allah
said: “We came upon a man who
was lying down on his back, and
another man who was standing
over him with a rock or stone
and was breaking his head with
it. Whenever he would strike
him, the rock would roll away.
Whenever he went to retrieve
the rock, he would no sooner
return than the other man’s
head would heal and return
18
18
to its previous state. Then the
man would keep on striking
him. I asked, “Who is this?”
[The Prophet then explained the
meaning of what he saw]: As for
the one whose head would be
constantly broken, he is a man
whom Allah taught the Quran,
but who would sleep from it at
night and not apply it during the
day. That will be done to him
until the Day of Resurrection.”
Consistently recite and
study the Quran
Constant recitation and study
ensures frequent revision and
that one does not forget what
one has memorised. Ibn ‘Umar
(may Allah be pleased with
father and son) reported that
the Messenger of Allah said: The
example of the companion of the
Quran is that of an owner of a
tied camel: if he is vigilant over
it, he will hold onto his camel;
if he releases it, it will go away.
is for the one who allows such
a situation through negligence.
The Messenger of Allah said:
“Wretched is it for one of them
to say, “I forgot such and such
verse.” Rather he was made to
forget it.”
(Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
The Messenger of Allah said
when he heard a man reciting
a chapter of the Quran: “May
Allah have mercy on him for he
has indeed reminded me of such
and such verse which I was made
to forget from such and such
chapter.”
(Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Obligation to
contemplate the Quran
Allah said, “(This is) a Book (the
Qur’ân) which We have sent
down to you, full of blessings
that they may ponder over
its Verses, and that men of
understanding may remember.”
(Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
(Sad 38:29)
Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased
with him) reported that the
Prophet said: “Maintain the
Quran, for by the One in whose
hand is my soul, it goes more
intensely than do camels from
their hobbles.”
One should reflect on its
teachings, aims and wisdoms.
Through this one learns about
one’s Lord, how to worship
Him and how to distinguish
between the righteous and
the misguided. The more one
reflects on the Quran, the more
his knowledge; foresight and
practical application of Islam will
increase.
(Related by al-Bukhari)
One should not
say regarding his
memorisation “I forget”
rather say “I was made to
forget
Saying “I forgot” implies neglect
of the Quran and the reprimand
Permissibility of reciting
the Quran whilst one is
standing, walking, riding,
sitting or lying down
Allah said, “Those who remember
Allâh standing, sitting, and lying
down on their sides...”
(Aali Imran 3:191)
In order that you may mount firmly
on their backs, and then may
remember the Favour of your Lord
when you mount thereon, and say:
“Glory to Him who has subjected
this to us, and we could never have
it (by our efforts). And verily, to Our
Lord we indeed are to return! “
(Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14)
‘Abd Allaah ibn Mughaffal (may
Allah be pleased with him) said: “I
saw the Messenger of Allah reciting
Surah al-Fath while he was riding his
camel.”
(Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
‘Aa`ishah (may Allah be pleased
with her) said: “While I would be
menstruating the Prophet would
recline in my lap and recite the
Quran.”
Requirement for ritual
purity to touch the Quran
Allah said, “Which none can touch
but the purified.”
(Al-Waqi’ah 56:79)
The Messenger of Allah sent a
letter to ‘Amr Ibn Hazm, governor
of Yemen, which contained various
legal rulings including: “And none
can touch the Quran except the
purified.”
(Related in al-Muwatta)
One may hold the Quran via a
barrier because in doing so one is
not physically touching the Quran. It
is permissible to carry the Quran in
one’s pocket but one cannot enter
the toilet with it unless one fears by
leaving it outside it will be stolen.
Recommendation to recite
Quran clearly and slowly
and dislike to recite it
quickly and carelessly
Allah said, “Or a little more; and
recite the Qur’ân in a clear and slow
style.”
(Al-Muzzammil 73:4)
Reciting Quran slowly and clearly
giving each letter its due according
to the rules of recitation allows for
greater contemplation, which is not
achieved with hastiness. However
to read quickly without compromise
and negligence allowing greater
amounts to be read can be deemed
better in the way the former is like
giving a single large jewel in charity
whilst the latter is like giving many
small jewels. The value of both is
indeterminable. And Allah knows
best.
Recommendation to
prolong certain vowels
when recititing the Quran
When asked about the recitation of
Prophet, Anas (may Allah be pleased
with him) said: “It was prolonged.”
And to demonstrate this, he read,
Bismillaahir-rahmaanir-raheem; he
prolonged Bismillaah; he prolonged
Ar-Rahmaan; and he prolonged ArRaheem.
(Related in al-Bukhari)
Prophetic guidance to
refrain from reciting
Quran when sleepy
‘Aa`ishah (may Allah be pleased
with her) narrated that the
Messenger of Allah said: “If one of
you becomes sleepy during prayer
then let him sleep (or rest) until his
sleepiness goes away because if one
of you prays while he is sleepy, he
might try to ask for forgiveness but
curses himself instead.”
