Description of
The “asynchronous” Introductory Latin
Our Intro Latin Course for the middle grades uses Latina Ponti (Latin for the bridge) a text/workbook
that develops the students understanding of Latin grammar and syntax. Along with that we will read
passages in Lingua Latina by Hans H. Orberg. The student will learn to compose sentences in Latin and
will even learn to converse a little bit in Latin!
Whiteboard Sessions:
Start the week with a pre-recorded Whiteboard Session. This is a lecture the student watches at home
on their computer; these can be viewed at the student's convenience and any number of times. The
week's Latin grammar concepts will be introduced. The student should have their books and notebook
paper and pencil ready. There will be opportunities for them to pause the lecture at certain spots,
practice what is being taught, and then start the lecture again to see whether or not they are getting the
concepts. This instant feedback is invaluable in building the student's confidence with the Latin!
Latina Ponti:
This text / workbook contains 28 lessons and 4 reviews. To make it easy to follow for a weekly plan,
each chapter will have a Practicum and Homework Exercises. At the beginning of the week, the student
will watch the recorded Whiteboard Session and then work the lesson's Practicum, which he will then
check with the key at the back of the workbook. If he, or she, gets it correct she is done for the day!
Homework:
After this the students will have three exercises to work for each week's lesson; they are called Day 1,
Day 2, and Day 3. These should be spread out over the week as much as possible: drilling vocabulary
one day, translating sentences another, and reading the story another. The tutor or parent will have a
Teachers' Key for this homework, and those may be corrected for a grade. A set of tests will be
included with the key.
Schedule of Assignments
You will be provided a chart with a suggested schedule, but because this is an asynchronous course, it
is up to you to time the student's progress through this course. This sheet will show the grammar
covered and the lessons to be done each week. You can fill in the dates to your convenience. In other
words, if you are going to be on vacation for two weeks, you just adjust the schedule as needed.
Live Q & A:
In our periodic “live” sessions online, the teacher will answer the student's questions and lead an
interactive session. At the minimum, there will be a Live session each second Tuesday of the month at
1:00 PM--but these will meet more often, as there is a need.
