KADİR HAS UNIVERSITY 2013-2014 STUDENT’S HANDBOOK 1 With an exceptional academic staff, a wide range of educational opportunities, strong international connections and dedication to development, we are one of the leading universities in Turkey. Our students, who are eager to build upon their knowledge through dedicated research and who continually strive for self-development, are the foundation of our success. With such a student body, we aim to build the future together. Situated in the heart of Istanbul, we are a global university providing students with the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in their areas of expertise. Through the course of their education, our students develop a sense of responsibility and self-confidence, as well as the ability to foresee and shape changes in the world, not just follow them. We are always on the lookout for rare talent, and we encourage our students to become innovative, dynamic individuals who are critically aware. Kadir Has University, apart from being a respected academic institution, also contributes to the vibrancy of Istanbul, supporting the economic, social and cultural development of our local area. We promote concerts, exhibitions and sporting events, and students have the opportunity to join a variety of clubs in addition to engaging with the social responsibility projects they undertake during the course of their studies. With the life-long education courses we offer, Kadir Has University is an energetic institution offering a wide range of opportunities for students, staff and the residents of Istanbul. I invite you to join us on this exciting journey of education and progress, which is grounded in the philosophy that the key to success is self-improvement. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ayd›n Rector 2 3 KAD‹R HAS Our University’s founder as well as the first Chairman of its Board of Trustees, the late Mr Kadir Has, one of the leading philanthropists of Turkey and holder of the Distinguished Service Medal of the Turkish Republic, strove during his life-time to, in his own words, “pay his debt to his country” believing that it was his debt of honour and obligation to Turkey to give back to his country what he had gained and to this end he systematically dedicated himself to philanthropy. The Kadir Has Foundation (HASVAK) he started in 1991 with his wife Rezan Has has carried out very important services towards helping the country develop, especially in the fields of education and health. They bequeathed their entire estate to this foundation. The late Mr. Kadir Has, who passed away in 2007 leaving behind immortal achievements, spoke of our university as “the realization of his biggest dream” and he continues to live with his principles, worldview and love of education in the philosophy of our university and in the hearts of our students whom he loved dearly. 4 5 Contents 8 Knowledge Management System (BYS) 9Blackboard 11 Information Center 12 Orientation Days Program 16 Student Advising System 18 Academic Ethics and Additional Programs 20Scholarships 22 Student Affairs 23 Social Responsibility 24 Sports Facilities 25 Health Services 27 Education in English 28 Opportunities for Studying Abroad 31 Lifelong Learning Center 32 Student Council 35 Student Clubs 36 Career Center 38 Khas Fest 40 Culture and Arts 42 Student Coordinatorship 43 Activity Calendar 45 Academic Calendar 46Contact 6 7 Knowledge Management System The Knowledge Management System (BYS) is a student information management system which facilitates the coordination of student registration and the archiving of student data. All our students must attend the presentation about BYS during the orientation days in order to fully learn the way this system works. All announcements made on BYS and all e-mails sent to the e-mail address given to students by the university are considered to be notices made to the official addresses of the students. All students are expected to check BYS announcements; Kadir Has University does not accept any responsibility for complications arising from the failure to fulfill this obligation. https://bys.khas.edu.tr Students can access the Knowledge Management System using their personal passwords given to them by the Student Affairs Office. Students can carry out the following operations on BYS: 1) Choose their courses, make their course registrations and send them to their advisors. 2) Check the advisors’ approval of course registration. 3) See weekly course schedules. 4)Check their exam scores. 5) Follow the announcements made by the university for the students. What is Blackboard? Blackboard is a learning management system which enables instructors to create and implement numerous activities that support their courses. Through this system, faculty members can easily communicate with their students, share course materials, give assignments and exams, and engage students in discussions outside class hours, as well as track student performance. The system can support distance learning and also facilitates enrichment of traditional campus based in-classroom courses with electronic content and activities. Blackboard enables users to access course materials and participate online in course activities from any computer, tablet or smart-phone with an internet connection and a web browser from anywhere in the world using their personal user name and password. As this is a system requiring a password for access, students can only see the content of the courses they are enrolled on. Blackboard for Students Via Blackboard, students can access all course materials prepared by the instructor and receive announcements about the course. The system also has the functionality of sending announcements as e-mails. As students can send their assignments using the Blackboard system they no longer need to worry about their homework getting lost or whether or not the instructor has received it. The use of Blackboard in face-to-face courses enables these courses to become more inter-active. http://khas.blackboard.com It is important for students to keep active the khas.edu.tr email addresses given to them during registration in order to use the BYS and Blackboard systems efficiently. 8 9 Information Center The KHAS Information Center is dedicated to providing the most up-to-date information services through the latest communication technologies. Why course selection is important? Education at Faculties, Applied Sciences School and Vocational Schools are carried out in accordance with the curriculum determined by the relevant committees and approved by the Senate taking into account the common courses specified by the Higher Education Council and accepted by the Senate. The necessary amount of credit-hours in order to graduate from the Faculties, Applied Sciences School and Vocational Schools are specified in the education plans of these units. The courses in the education plan are comprised of compulsory and elective courses. Students must take the compulsory courses, whereas they can choose the elective courses they would like to take. Students must attend 70% of classes and 80% of independent applied studies, such as labs and workshops. Students who do not attend the required minimum number of classes are not permitted to take final exams or re-take exams. An undergraduate diploma is granted to students who successfully complete all of the required courses and credit hours in their program of study, maintain a minimum of a 2.00 cumulative GPA, and complete any required internships and other projects specified by the faculty or unit. Student Advisors For each student a faculty member is appointed as an advisor by the related department. Your advisor monitors your studies and makes recommendations about the compulsory and elective courses you need to take within the degree, double major and minor programs you are enrolled on. During the registration renewal at the beginning of each semester you have to choose your courses with your advisor and get his/her official approval. You may seek help and support from all faculty members on issues regarding your education; however, your advisor is the first person to contact for initial support and appraisal of issues. 16 17 Academic Ethics and Additional Programs 18 Academic Ethics In their academic work, all students and faculty should strive to abide by the research, publication and academic ethics principles outlined in the Kadir Has University Scientific Research and Publications Ethics Guide. Students found to contravene the ethics rules with unethical behavior such as cheating or plagiarism will face disciplinary hearings and if found guilty by the Disciplinary Committee disciplinary punishment will be given based on the Discipline Regulations up to and including suspension from school. Double Major Program The purpose of our double major program is to provide undergraduate students successfully pursuing a major with the opportunity to simultaneously attain a second bachelor’s degree in another field of study. Students may apply to do a double major at the earliest in their third semester and at the latest in their fifth semester. Minor Degree Program The Minor Degree is a track which allows a student successfully studying a Bachelor’s program to take some courses of another program of his/her interest. A student who completes the minor degree track with a minimum GPA of 2.00 receives a certificate. Transfer (Between Departments and Programs) For students who would like to change their area of study, we have taken steps to ensure that they are able to transfer into a different program. Students may transfer to another program of study within the university or transfer to Kadir Has University from another institution of higher education. In addition transfers from associate to undergraduate degrees is possible, the details of which are declared in the related Regulations document. 19 Khas Honorary Scholarship Khas Scholarship 2011 T.C KADIR HAS UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP REGULATION Khas Honorary Scholarship Article 6 - At the end of each academic year, students who have completed their compulsory and elective courses with a GPA of 3.00 or higher and are in the top five percentile of class ranking for their faculty as specified by the appended criteria are eligible for the Khas Honorary Scholarship for the following school year. Student Affairs Office This office carries out all the clerical procedures regarding: student registrations, student ID cards, scholarships and similar tasks; all the clerical procedures originating from departments and programs of Faculties, Applied Sciences School and Vocational Schools; the monitoring of registration and the adding and dropping of courses within the deadlines set out in the academic calendar; the provision of transcripts and diplomas and conducting post-graduation paperwork. This office works for all the departments and programs of all the faculties and schools of the university and functions as a bridge between the students, students’ families and other units of the university. Faculty Secretariats Faculty secretariats carry out the administrative work of faculties; these are the primary units where students submit official documents such as medical reports. Faculty secretariats also help students contact faculty members. Corporate Social Responsibility Office “Charity that seeks no returns accrues the greatest benefits…” Kadir Has At Kadir Has University, our strategies for development are based on social, environmental and ethical values to ensure that all stakeholders as well as students, faculty members and administrative staff share a common sense of responsibility that is channeled through volunteer activities. One such endeavor is the Rights of Neighbors Project. A stakeholder committee, the members of which are residents of Cibali and representatives of the university, was established by the CSR Academy with the aim of finding creative and innovative solutions to local problems. In this project, stakeholders’ participation is a primary concern, and our goal is to implement work together with local residents that is socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. We have launched health check-up programs and projects to develop the local area, as well as cinema screenings, theater performances, sporting events and collaborations with local schools. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) courses are included in our curriculum, in addition to applied projects aiming at social participation and environmental work. All the students in our faculties and schools where education is four years long enroll in CSR courses, which take place in the second year of their education and continue for two semesters as non-credit compulsory courses. As part of their CSR coursework, students attend seminars given by specialists on a variety of issues pertaining to social responsibility, and also implement their own social responsibility projects. After receiving foundational training in social responsibility, students meet up with representatives of leading NGOs during our Civil Society Days event which is held every year. Within the scope of this event, the university helps students find opportunities to work at an NGO of their choice. In this respect, every student at Kadir Has University has the option to actively work at an NGO; thus, our students learn more about the world of NGOs and how they can contribute to the work that NGOs carry out. As the university gives great importance to inter-active communication it encourages students to participate in cultural and social CSR activities and organizes the annual Charity Marathon for the Cibali area and hosts the Turkey Corporate Social Responsibility Marketplace event. The next Marketplace is going to be organized on 6th of December 2013. 22 23 Sports Facilities We offer a variety of sports programs to ensure that our students have the opportunity to develop their physical as well as intellectual abilities. The Kadir Has Campus in Cibali has a basketball court, mini football field, climbing wall, fitness center and indoor sports center. At the Selimpaşa campus there are multi-purpose sports areas for basketball, volleyball, and tennis, as well as a mini football field, climbing wall and fitness center. We offer three separate areas of focus for sports activities, with specialized trainers for each: Health Services All three of our campuses (Cibali, Selimpaşa and Bahçelievler) have on-site medical centers and offer psychological counseling services. Students and personnel have free access to these facilities, and can get check-ups and have prescriptions filled. All campuses of our university also collaborate with general hospitals nearby. • University sports teams • Independent sports/exercise • Inter-university programs In memory of our founder Kadir Has, the university has held the annual Erciyes Mountain Climb for the last six years, in addition to intercampus sports events. The university cafeterias and canteens are monitored for quality and price. In addition, the university has a museum, research labs, a rich library, sports facilities, tennis court, cinema halls and theaters. Together with extensive student club activities every opportunity is presented for you to make the best use of every minute of your time. Rezan Has Museum The Rezan Has Museum which hosts thematic exhibitions as well as exhibitions of private collections has been active since 2007 with a variety of exhibitions and activities aiming to share with art-lovers the previously unseen collections of significant Turkish art collectors. The museum expanded its collection in 2009 through the acquisition of materials related to the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory. These items offer a rare insight into the industrial, economic, political and socio-cultural history of the Turkish Republic.
