9/10/2013 Do Now: Quote Response “Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others.” -Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) Write down the quote then complete the following steps: Step 1: Vocabulary- Write down any words you don’t know and write a possible definition of each. Step 2: Interpret-What do you think the quote means; answer in a few sentences. Step 3: Example- Come up with an example that represents the quote. Step 4: Agree/disagree- Write whether you agree or disagree with the quote and why. Grammar Skill: Verbs • An action verb is transitive if it directs action toward someone or something named in the same sentence. • An action verb is intransitive if it does not direct action toward someone or something named in the sentence. • The receiver of the action of a transitive verb is called the object of the verb. • Intransitive verbs, however, have no objects. Grammar Skill: Verbs • An action verb is a verb that tells what action someone or something is performing. • The person or thing that performs the action is called the subject of the verb. • Action verbs show mental action as well as visible action. Grammar Skill: Verbs • Most action verbs can be transitive in one sentence and intransitive in another. • To determine whether a verb is transitive or intransitive, ask Whom? or What? after the verb. Conflict (n) Suffix -acy -al -ance, -ence -dom Meaning state or quality act or process of state or quality of place or state of being Example privacy refusal maintenance, eminence freedom, kingdom Definition: A continued struggle or battle between opposing forces. Sentence: Characters can have both internal and external conflicts. 2. Author’s purpose (n) Definition: An author’s reason for writing. Sentence: The author’s purpose was to persuade the reader to agree with his point of view. 3. Perspective (n) Definition: An evaluation of a situation from one person’s point of view. Sentence: When you respond to a journal topic you are giving your perspective on a topic. SSR Task: Literary Analysis • Directions: Each day you will choose one of the tasks to complete. • Write down the date and the pages read before you complete the task • Choose from the following: Questioner, Illuminator, Connector, Illustrator, & Word Watcher. • You will use each task only once.
