Do Now: Quote Response
“Keep your fears to yourself, but share your
courage with others.”
-Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894)
Write down the quote then complete the
following steps:
Step 1: Vocabulary- Write down any words you don’t
know and write a possible definition of each.
Step 2: Interpret-What do you think the quote means;
answer in a few sentences.
Step 3: Example- Come up with an example that
represents the quote.
Step 4: Agree/disagree- Write whether you agree or
disagree with the quote and why.
Grammar Skill: Verbs
• An action verb is transitive if it directs action toward
someone or something named in the same sentence.
• An action verb is intransitive if it does not direct
action toward someone or something named in the
sentence.
• The receiver of the action of a transitive verb is
called the object of the verb.
• Intransitive verbs, however, have no objects.

• An action verb is a verb that tells what
action someone or something is performing.
• The person or thing that performs the action
is called the subject of the verb.
• Action verbs show mental action as well as
visible action.

• Most action verbs can be transitive in one
sentence and intransitive in another.
• To determine whether a verb is transitive
or intransitive, ask Whom? or What? after
the verb. If you can find the answer in the
sentence, the verb is transitive. If not, the
verb is intransitive.

3. Perspective (n)
Definition: An evaluation of a situation from one person’s point of
view.
Sentence: When you respond to a journal topic you are giving
your perspective on a topic.

• Directions: Each day you will choose
one of the tasks to complete.
• Write down the date and the pages
read before you complete the task

Class Work Part 1
• Set up your paper in Cornell format.
• Title your notes: Mood, Poe & “The Cask of
Amontillado”
• For the Mood activity you will be listening to
four songs.
• For each song list the mood words that fit with
the song.
• Then write a sentence in which you describe
the mood of the song.
Class Work Part 2
• Watch the short biography on Edgar Allan Poe.
• Using the same notes page take notes on the
life of Edgar Allan Poe (10-15 facts).
• Write your notes on the right side of the page.
• Write subtitles/main ideas/or questions about
the life of Poe on the left side of the paper.
