As students achieve oral communication accuracy and fluency during the first stage of study, course emphasis will shift gradually towards written literacy. New vocabulary items are presented in both Pinyin, the phonetic system, and Chinese characters. Explanation of fundamental grammar forms will be embedded in contexts and situations rich in sociocultural knowledge. At the end of the this course, students will be expected to have gained proficiency in Pinyin, to be able to read and write 200 – 300 Chinese characters with an understanding of different components of Chinese characters, as well as to formulate basic sentences in Chinese. Course Format and Credits: Four instructional hours per week. 3 college credits. Continued Area of Study: Chinese 1215 Pre-requisites: No pre-requisites. However, students who fluently speak one Chinese dialect (e.g. Cantonese) and write more than 200 Chinese characters are not allowed to enroll in this course. Over-qualified students will not be given credits for the course. Required Texts: Contemporary Chinese Textbook I, Sinolingua, 2003 Contemporary Chinese Exercise Book I. Linguistic stage: Emphasis is on learning grammar rules and sentence patterns. Speaking, reading and writing skills will be enhanced. Students will learn around 300 characters. Students are expected to present proof(s) of a justified excuse for missing a class (e.g. a medical doctor's note) and seek help from the instructor for covered materials. Unjustified absence will result in a lowered grade and a forced withdraw from the course. Missed Quizzes: No make-ups will be permitted for Weekly Quizzes or Oral Tests unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor. No make-ups for Midterm exams or Final exams. Other Operational Details: Academic Dishonesty: All forms of cheating, including plagiarism, are considered serious offences and will not be tolerated. Disruptive behaviors: Engaging in small talks, coming late and leaving early are considered disruptive to the teaching/learning process, and repeated disruptive behaviors will result in a lowered grade. No food is allowed in the classroom. Cellular phones should be switched off before class. It is your responsibility to be aware of the time and date of your final examinations, as indicated on the final version of the examination schedule. If possible, final examinations will be rescheduled upon request, for any student scheduled to write: i. two or more examinations at the same time, or ii. two or more examinations each exceeding one hour in duration with an intervening break of less than one-half hour (30 minutes), or iii. more than three examinations in one day, or iv. more than six hours of examinations in one day. Final examinations will not be re-scheduled for reasons other than those noted above. Requests for re-scheduling of examinations must be made on the appropriate form available from the Front Counter at the Office of Registrar, Room B130.
