Dual Enrollment is an enriching program where high school students take college courses and earn college credit in their own high school. Benefits of Dual Enrollment: Students earn college and high school credits simultaneously. Credits earned through dual enrollment are both high school and college credits. College credits transfer to ALL Virginia Community Colleges, and most four-year colleges and universities. Dual enrollment is convenient and cost-effective. Dual enrollment classes are taught during the school day at the high school, making college-level academics accessible to all high school students. Dual enrollment credits cost far less than credits earned at four-year colleges and universities, and are earned before students graduate from high school. Students are exposed to college-level academics. Dual Enrollment courses hold the same rigor as any college level course. Dual enrollment instructors are high school teachers with the credentials to teach college-level courses. Many dual enrollment classes are weighted, which can help students boost their high school GPA. Steps and Responsibilities for Students Steps and Responsibilities for Parents Students interested in Dual Enrollment should follow these steps: Parents of Dual Enrollment students have these responsibilities: 1. Discuss Dual Enrollment with your high school counselor as you are considering courses for your junior and senior academic year. You must obtain permission from your high school to enroll in dual enrollment classes. 1. Follow up with your student to be sure she/ he completes and submits GCC’s Application for Admission and Registration forms. 2. Complete GCC’s Application for Admission by the deadline. Apply online: http://www. germanna.edu/admissions/ Note: Your high school counselor also has paper applications. Students who have previously taken dual enrollment courses do not need to reapply to GCC each semester. 3. Once you complete your application, you will receive a GCC Student ID number. You must have this number in order to complete the next step, taking the placement test. 4. Sign up to take the Compass college placement test. Ask your HS Counselor for testing dates and times. It is strongly recommended that you take practice tests in preparation for this test. Students may submit qualifying SAT or ACT scores to be exempted from the Compass test. 5. Once you complete the placement test, you can register for classes at your high school. Your high school counselor or DE Liaison can provide you with the registration form and registration deadline dates. 6. Submit tuition payment (tuition rates and deadlines vary by school system). All tuition is paid directly to the high school. 7. Remember that you are developing a permanent college academic record. It is your responsibility to complete all course requirements and to be aware of all important deadlines, which will be in your course outline. Note: If your student is under age 18, parents answer the questions on Part 6 of the student’s online Application for Admission, pertaining to Domicile. For the online application, print and sign the last page, and submit to your student’s counselor. If completing paper applications, sign the Certification Section on page 3 of the Application for Admission, and submit to the counselor. 2. Check your student’s high school’s “Program of Study,” and set up a meeting with your student’s counselor to find out about specific course offerings at your high school. 3. Submit payment (tuition rates and deadlines vary by school system) directly to your student’s school. 4. Remind your student that, in addition to earning college credit, they are developing a permanent college academic record (transcript). All college level classes should be taken seriously.
