Annual Meeting Round Up Yee-Haw! This year’s Annual Meeting, was a great success, with approximately 114 Co-op memberships being represented, and approximately 380 barbecue lunches served. It was a beautiful day in Alpine with mild temperatures, as members began arriving at the Civic Center by 8:00 a.m. The Health Fair, and a delicious continental breakfast were waiting for members after registration. Registration and distribution of the attendance prizes went flawlessly. Attendance prizes this year included a customized key chain commemorating the 60th anniversary of RGEC, incorporated with a State of Texas quarter, as well as a leather folio embossed with the Rio Grande logo. The meeting opened with Gary Nichols, Alpine Area Operations Manager welcoming everyone to the event, and reminding members that children could participate in the Kids’ Korner activities to allow their parents to enjoy the meeting. Nichols gave members instructions on the procedures for the “question & answer” segment of the meeting, and introduced Spanish interpreter, Mona Lisa Jimenez. Ms. Jimenez then provided the Welcome in Spanish, and instructed anyone who needed her services to raise their hands. No one required her services. The National Anthem, was sung by local vocalist Leah Carnegy, as members of Boy Scout Troop 41 of the Big Bend Council posted the colors and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Reverend Larry Gaumond, 1st United Methodist Church of Alpine gave the invocation. W.H. “Bill” Cowden, RGEC board president, then officially called the meeting to order. He welcomed the group and instructed the membership that, upon approval of a motion, he would dispense with the reading of the 2004 Annual Meeting Minutes. The motion was made, seconded, and approved. This was followed by the drawing of five door prizes. Current directors were introduced, as were the candidates for election. Director service awards were presented to the following: Jack Skiles, 3 terms; Art Gonzalez, 2 terms; Hugh Childress, 2 terms; and Lowell Woodward, 2 terms. Director election results were presented by Stephan Sigurdsson of the Co-op’s auditing firm, Eide Bailly, LLP. Of 5,100 ballots mailed out, only 866 were returned by the specified date. Of the ballots returned, 857 were qualified; 7 were undeliverable as addressed; and 2 were non-qualified. Election totals are as follows: District 5 # Votes Henry Mills Perry Michael Baker Vernon Nial Billings Write-In Votes No Vote On Ballot Total 395 226 205 4 27 857 Henry Mills, newly elected director, District 5 Left: Directors recognized for service were Art Gonzalez, 2 terms; Jack Skiles, 3 terms; Hugh Childress, 2 terms; and Lowell Woodward, 2 terms. Guests and RGEC employees alike were literally laughing until tears came to their eyes as Claassen’s cast of characters targeted various RGEC employees, including Alpine Operations Area Lineman, Trini Manzano, and Communications Coordinator Cindy Edwards with their remarks. Finally, Claassen claimed to have forgotten one of his dummies, and asked to borrow RGEC’s Network Administrator Conrad Dalton as his subject. Dalton, a real trooper and good sport, was subjected to a clown mask, pigtails, and hat, as Claassen literally put words in his mouth chiding RGEC Director Art Gonzalez, who was a good sport about being picked on by a “dummy”. President Cowden adjourned the meeting, and it was time for a delicious lunch consisting of barbecued chicken, brisket, potato salad, baked beans, cornbread, biscuits, brownies and cupcakes. The awarding of the remaining 121 door prizes took place during lunch. Each door prize was valued at a minimum of $50. The Grand Prize was a 1998 Ford F150 SuperCab “Retired” Coop pickup, valued at approximately $3,600, and won by Ernesto Carrillo of Van Horn. The total estimated value of all prizes awarded was $11,868. (For a complete list of prizes and winners, please see the final four pages of the RGEC News section.) Next year’s Annual Meeting, the Co-op’s 61st, will be held in Dell City. Make plans now to be there! Rio Grande Electric Co-op November, 2005 2 WildBlue Satellite Internet: Reaching 100 Installations Mark Turn Old Hats & Boots Out To Pasture - Or Give ‘Em To The Co-op! By the time this magazine reaches you, Rio Grande will have installed nearly 100 WildBlue systems in locations including places like Terlingua, Comstock, Pandale, Salt Flat, Brackettville, Asherton, Fort Stockton, Fort Davis, Marfa, and Ruidosa (TX). We are working as quickly as possible to install systems for those of you who have returned contracts. Currently, the wait time is about 2-3 weeks from the time we receive your paperwork. “Minimum System Requirements” are included with each WildBlue contract packet. They include the operating systems compatible with WildBlue, and various other important information about your computer. It is your responsibility to see that your computer meets these requirements. If our installers make a trip to your location, only to find that you do not have the appropriate computer configuration, you may be charged a trip fee. Our installers will not conduct repairs or upgrades to your computer, nor will they network your home computers. Technical Support. The toll-free technical support number, 1-888256-0449, was provided by the installers at the time your WildBlue service was connected. This number is only for questions pertaining to your WildBlue internet service. Support personnel are standing by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to assist you. Please do not call the Co-op with questions of a technical nature. We have retained specially-trained technicians who are experienced with any questions which may arise about your WildBlue service, and they can be reached at the Tech Support number. If you have questions about your individual computer settings, you will probably find the information in the manuals which came with your computer, by calling the software manufacturer, or by accessing the appropriate “Help” section on your computer. Rio Grande’s staff are occupied with the operations involved in providing your electrical service, and simply do not have the time necessary to devote to each individual’s computer questions. Routers. We continue to receive questions pertaining to the use of routers with your WildBlue equipment. WildBlue likes the Netgear, D-Link and Linksys routers. (Other routers may work only intermittently.) The great thing about WildBlue is that it works as well for rural people as those in the city, and that’s something those of us in rural areas have been missing out on for a very long time. We have enjoyed receiving feedback from those of you who are experiencing the thrill of WildBlue’s high speed satellite internet. The most often used phrases are “I love it!” and “It’s great!”. If you have any questions regarding WildBlue satellite internet, or scheduling your installation date, please call the Co-op at 1-800-749-1509. For helpful tips on computer issues, go to www.riogrande.coop, and click on the RioNet icon. In the weeks ahead, we’ll be adding information to address the most frequently asked computer and internet questions. Rio Grande Electric Co-op November, 2005 If you have western hats & boots that have seen their better days, but just can’t bring yourself to throw them away, donate them to the Co-op! We’re already rounding up retired hats and boots for decorations at next year’s annual meeting. This year’s “Old West” theme was such a hit, we plan on using it again, and with your help, next year the decorations will have even more appeal. Your donation will be labeled with your name, ranch name, and town or area. Just take your “retirees” to your local RGEC area office! (If we have some particularly unusual or colorful characters, they may even be a featured photo in a future magazine edition.) Pralines 1 small pkg. butterscotch pudding mix 1 cup sugar ½ cup brown sugar (packed) ½ cup evaporated milk 1 tablespoon butter 1½ cup chopped nuts (optional) Mix the first five ingredients together well and bring to a boil. Add pecans and boil until softball stage (234º). Whip 3 or 4 minutes with wooden spoon until creamy looking. Working rapidly, drop from a tablespoon onto waxed paper. Using a wooden spoon is recommended. -- Contributed by Dixie & Clinton Brown, Brackettville, T X. Clinton is Rio Grande ECI’s Director of Operations.
