The Ontario Court of Justice requires a mediator to provide effective family
mediation services between parties in order to produce mutually acceptable
agreements in a wide variety of complex and sensitive issues. Your duties will
onclude: providing mediation of family law disputes including, but not limited to,
the issues of custody, access and child support; screening for domestic violence
and power imbalances; conducting individual and joint meetings with parties;
maintaining contact with counsel throughout the mediation process, writing open or
closed mediation reports for the parties and/or the court; providing information on
court procedures and alternative options; referring clients for legal advice or to
other community services; providing guidance and training for mediation interns
assisting the service; preparing statistical reports; responding to general inquiries
about the mediation service and promoting and representing the service in the
community. Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:MSW or equivalent degree; knowledge of mediation and negotiation
techniques and practices; ability to apply mediation skills and techniques;
knowledge of legal steps involved in a mediation and separation and/or divorce;
understanding of power imbalances and techniques to redress them; some
knowledge and understanding of family dynamics and child development as it
relates to family mediation; awareness of multicultural issues in dispute resolution;
strong oral and written communication skills; tact and diplomacy in dealing with
emotionally sensitive issues in order to ensure fairness and impartiality.
