For an independent transfer, the individual should be able to do this without help. 2. Have the individual place the strongest foot slightly in back of the other foot. The individual’s knees should be spread slightly apart. 3. Instruct the individual to place the palms of the hands at the edge of the bed and to lean slightly forward. 4. Tell the individual to press the hands into the bed to push off, at the same time the legs straighten, to assume a standing position. 5. Once standing, have the individual reach for the far arm of the chair and then step or pivot to stand in front of the chair. Instruct the individual to sit when the edge of the seat is felt against the back of the legs. Reverse these directions when transferring from chair to bed.
