Head of Schools Corner
Dear Gulliver Community,
Early this week, I received a request from the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS),
related to a theme that will be part of its annual conference in February 2016. They asked me to tell them
about “What’s Your Story?: The Power of Trailblazers, Catalysts and Calamities.” One of the more remarkable
characteristics I see at Gulliver every day is the relentless drive for innovation on the part of teachers and
students, both inside and outside the classroom and at every level. Sometimes this happens on a much
wider scale, and serendipitously, we had an event at our Miller Drive Campus on Monday, December 7,
that was part-trailblazing and part-catalyst (and fortunately, without calamity). It is certainly a story I will
share as part of our response to the NAIS.
December 7 was a very different school day for students at Miller Drive. Instead of classes, they participated
in a daylong conference on climate change and rising sea level in South Florida. This event was a great
example of the many factors we have been emphasizing this year, which were highlighted by Patrick
Bassett in his presentation as part of our strategic planning process (which can be viewed by clicking here).
The event at Miller Drive included:
• Expert presenters – professors from Florida International University who had just returned from the United Nations
Paris Climate Change Conference, where they engaged with world leaders to try to develop meaningful new policies
that all countries can follow.
• Real-world relevance – allowing students to connect with global and local issues, such as learning about an app that lets
you put in your address and see where it will be relative to rising water during the coming years.
• Student-centered learning experiences – classmates had the opportunity to create their own meaning from the lesson
through cross-curricular sessions in social science, English and math that deepened their understanding of the issues. It
was exciting to see how much many of them already knew about climate change and the concern they had about how
to start making a difference.
• Implementation of technology to deepen and personalize the learning process – using Twitter throughout the conference,
with event hashtag #gpsclimateconnect, to connect and attract hundreds of posts and impressions. Students also
explored apps such as the rising water app mentioned above, as well as data about the climate change process. In
addition, we webcasted the conference in real-time.
• Emphasis on 21st Century Learning skills of character, communication, creativity, critical thinking and collaboration via
varied instruction including a dynamic approach and experiential learning.
This is what a “school of the future” looks like. We must create more experiences like this one, and we are working to do so at all
levels, in order to prepare our students to become highly effective and contributing participants in their futures. We must always
be willing to take some academic and intellectual risks, and we continue to expand the skills our students have to understand the
world around them. In the dialogue between the students and the expert panel at the climate change conference, the discussion
moved seamlessly between ideas in science, politics, economics, community outreach; the need for communications and marketing;
and ways to achieve demonstrable gains. It was so gratifying to watch as faculty and students worked together on a complex topic.
This kind of vibrant learning experience is true to the Gulliver mission and tradition, and makes me proud to be part of this
dynamic and forward-thinking school community. Through our willingness to look fearlessly into the future, adopt a strategic
direction and commit to moving forward, we ensure a bright future for our students and for our school.
As we head into the winter break, I want to wish everyone a joyous holiday season and a happy new year. I look forward to getting
back to all of our exciting work again in 2016.
Sincerely,
Frank Steel

On October 31, the Gulliver Sailing Team competed in
the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association
(SAISA) South Points #3 regatta. The Lauderdale Yacht Club
hosted this regatta at Holland Park in Hollywood, on North Lake.
With 33 teams from 20 schools participating, the lake was packed

their way to the course for the first race. As the day progressed, the
breeze increased steadily, allowing for plenty of racing but creating
difficult conditions.

trip were Timmy Kaplan ‘16, Sean Brennan ‘17 and Jared Kaplan

each division. After all the scores were calculated, Gulliver finished
third overall, fourth in A division and third in B division! This
was a fantastic result in such difficult conditions. We are proud to
have sailed so many different members of our team and everyone
performed incredibly. This result gives the team valuable points
toward the conference championships and continued motivation to
work hard at the next regatta.
Gulliver fielded both varsity and junior varsity teams. Jack Johansson

winning shot. The final score came in at 24-23. In true Raider spirit,
the boys captured the title with amazing determination.
Congratulations to Coach Braxton and the boys for an amazing

Dollars and Sense
The fourth grade students are immersed in the “Dollars
and Sense” unit in their reading anthology, Imagine It! To
help with the concept of running a business and the importance of
handling your money wisely, the “employees” created crafts and sold
them at the annual Gulliver Holiday Marketplace. The “employees”
voted and named the business Ornaments “4” You. This year a
twist was added by creating red, white and blue candy canes which
portions will be donated to the local Veterans hospital. Every fourth
grader also created a holiday card - inspired by the moving Middle
School presentation on Veterans Day - and they will be delivered with
our donation.
This year, the employees raised more than $1,100. The students
decided on the following charities that will benefit from their hard
work:
• $100 to the local Veterans Hospital, which will enhance
their holiday celebrations
• $500 to the Christopher Ricardo Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
• $500 to the CancerFree Kids, a charity supported by a
fourth grade family whose child was afflicted with and
survived cancer

Cell Analogy
To understand the cell’s
internal structure and
how the parts of a cell
work together, 7th graders
in Biomedical and Life Science
chose a non-related system to
analyze its working parts. The
different cell functions were
compared to the inner workings
of a common organizational structure found
in their everyday lives, such as a school, plane
or city. During this project, the students
exercised cooperative learning, planning and

Death Masks
Students in Mrs. Johnstone’s Civilization and Cities class
began the process of creating Egyptian death masks. To
begin this project, students laid strips of plastered fabric across their
partner’s face in a style that mimicked the mummification process.
After the plastered strips dried, students carefully peeled off their
masks to reveal an exact negative of their face. These negatives were
then filled with Plaster of Paris which dry to reveal a plaster replica
of their face. Students then decorated these replicas of themselves in
the style of Egyptian death masks. 18 – MIDDLE

Students Earn All-State Honors
The Florida Music Educators’ Association (FMEA)
sponsors the Florida All State audition process to
promote students dedication to their musical knowledge
and skill and to encourage FMEA member directors to support
their students in this development.
Literature Circles
Students in Mrs. Jaramillo’s 6th grade Literature class are
participating in literature circles while reading the novel
Sounder. Literature circles, made up of small groups of students,
provide a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection
as they read, discuss and respond to a novel. Each student in the
group has a specific task lending itself to leadership development,
good communication and collaboration. The discussion is guided
by student responses to what they have read and collaboration is at
the heart of this approach. Through literature circles, students are
guided to a deeper understanding of what they read as they add to
their understanding and construct new meaning with other readers.
All-State is the highest honor a Florida music student can receive.
Some 1,600 students earn this honor each year selected through
a process that begins with more than 64,000 students from
around the state vying for the recognition of the FMEA’s Annual
Conference. Those who earn it perform in one of 15 ensembles
(bands, orchestras, and choirs) This competitive process begins
throughout the state in auditions hosted by 21 FMEA Rregions.
Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges
who rank each instrument or voice part. From this ranking,
a select group of musicians advances from their Region to
compete against musicians from other regions in seven FMEA
area competitions. The highest-ranking musicians judged at the
FMEA area competitions qualify to perform in a FMEA All-State
ensemble group. These All-State students participate in three days
of rehearsals directed by nationally recognized conductors during
the annual state FMEA clinic/convention. Their performances
before thousands of attendees bring this extraordinary event to
a close.
This year, seven Gulliver Academy students were accepted to
participate in three All-State music ensembles. These students will
perform with the FMEA All-State Elementary Chorus, Middle
School Treble Chorus or Honor Band in January, at the Tampa
Convention Center.
Congratulations to All-State Elementary Chorus members;
Cassandra Kraft ‘23, Isabela Rezk ‘23, Christian Rodriguez ‘23
and Ray Allen ‘23, Middle School Treble Chorus; Cali McKenzie
‘20 and Ashley Ubalijoro ‘20 and Middle School Honor Band
member; Melanie Martucci ‘20. This is the second year in a row
that singers Kraft, Rezk and McKenzie were accepted into these
prestigious ensembles.
On behalf of Gulliver, a hearty congratulations goes to these
students for the recognition of their talent on a state wide level.
Martian Explorers
Mrs. Healy’s 6th grade science class
participated in an interactive webinar
entitled, “Real Martian Explorers...just
what does it take?” During this interactive
presentation, students interacted with Doug Ming, a NASA
scientist within NASA Astromaterials Research and Exploration
Science (NASA ARES) at the NASA Johnson Space Center.
Discussion centered around comparisons between the Martian
Movie and what it might take to enable humans to live and work on
Mars as real martian explorers.

On November 17, Gulliver yearbook and
newspaper students were treated to a
visit from Vanessa Lopez, executive editor
at Insight Editions in San Rafael, California.
Lopez shared her experiences in the publishing
business and how they correlate to similar
experiences students have while working on
a school publication. From layout concept
to marketing and sales, Lopez offered a realworld perspective of career opportunities
within the publishing world. She also shared
some on the unique publications Insight offers.
Lopez began her career in book publishing as
a managing editorial assistant at Vintage Books

Department Update
Gulliver Prep’s Visual Arts Department is working on an
intuitive project. Intuitive painting is a tool for beginners as well
as advanced painters. Play is encouraged. The goal is not to make
paintings for exhibition or to learn specific techniques. Rather, the
goal is to allow yourself the space to be inside color, paint and process
while locating the inner core of your creative self. The students have
been doing an excellent job! Do you agree? #GoRaiders

Gulliver Prep’s National Honor
Society Initiates First No Shave
November
During the month of November, Gulliver Prep’s National
Honor Society (NHS) initiated its first No Shave November
Drive. Gulliver Prep administrators and faculty, Mr. George Hart,
Mr. Chris Kang, Mr. Adam Schachner, Mr. Gabriel Medina and Mr.
Luis Luis-Fayat, agreed to grow out their beards for the entire month
to raise awareness and raise money for prostate cancer research. The
catch? Whichever administrator or faculty member raises the most
money will have to endure having a funny facial hair style during the
first week of December! Each faculty member has been designated a
group to represent (found below). The winning class will get to vote
on that facial hair style. Here’s to a month of not shaving our beards,
but shaving away cancer! Way to go, Raiders!

Gulliver Key Club Community Efforts
Gulliver Key Club is working in partnership with
students in Ruth Owen’s Krusé Educational Center’s
(ROK) Transition Program. On November 5, members of the
club visited the school and implemented “Healthy Habits” themed
activities for the day. The key club members began the day leading
with a presentation explaining the dos and don’ts of healthy habits.
Next, club members distributed healthy snacks and discussed the
importance of eating a balanced diet. Mr. Crespo, head coach for
the boys’ Prep varsity baseball team, led the next activity, which
included tips on how to stay fit and safe outdoors, the decoration
of a baseball cap for sun protection, how to apply sunblock and
outdoor baseball drills. The group enjoyed a healthy lunch with
fruit filled waffle cones for dessert, all provided by the Key Club!
Although club members hated to leave they gave students, we left
the students at ROK each a hygiene bag filled with items to remind
them of the importance of healthy habits. Please join us in congratulating the students and faculty for helping
bring healthy habits into the lives of students around our community!
Smiling Tummies Gives Back to the Community
Members of Gulliver Prep’s beloved Smiling Tummies club,
dedicated their time to help serve the homeless in Miami.
Students and faculty joined together to help make 791 peanut butter
and jelly sandwiches for homeless people. Surpassing their original
goal at 500 sandwiches. “There are certain moments that remind
teachers how lucky we are to have this profession. Those moments,
almost exclusively, are about students and what wonderful human
beings they can be when given the chance to step up and prove it,”
said Patrick Griffin, Prep social sciences faculty. “We had students
from every grade, faculty and staff all contribute to the idea that
everyone in our community deserves a decent meal and proof that
they can hold in their hands that they matter to someone else. I
am tremendously proud of our students, our community and the
leadership of our club who made the whole thing happen. As I told
the volunteers near the end of our event, they won at being human
beings that day.”
Please join us in congratulating our students and wonderful faculty
for their dedication to giving back to the community. We are so
proud of you!
