Reflections of the 2011-2012 ABBA Committee Chairmen to be on their program to present the progress of the American Brahman from the early 1900’s until the present time. Bob Hudgins Executive Committee Over the last two years, our committees have been very active with new programs and ideas in order to promote and advance our association and the American Brahman breed. We have seen two new videos completed (domestic and international) that will place our breed in front of both old and new prospective customers. The domestic video was also shown on RFD-TV. The last two years, the ABBA Membership Convention was organized and well received by our membership. In 2011, “The Brahman Think Tank” was organized to bring together industry leaders to discuss the role of the American Brahman in domestic markets. That same year, we established a new staff position, Director of Communications and Youth Activities. In 2012, the new F1 Plus program was established to further recognize the percent of American Brahman genetics in commercial herds. This program was also established to strengthen ABBA’s Golden Certified and Certified F1 programs. We also saw a large delegation of ABBA members attend the World Brahman Congress held in Panama. It was an honor I want to thank the head of each committee and committee members for their diligent work for the benefit of the American Brahman breed. Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank the staff of ABBA who has helped me over my last two years in office. They have worked overtime for the betterment of our association and the American Brahman breed. Dr. Ricky Hughes, Communications Committee The primary responsibility of the Communications committee is to promote the Brahman breed. This is accomplished through print advertising, the internet and use of television. 2012 was a great year for us. The ABBA created a position of Director of Communications. This position allowed us to have a full time office employee to facilitate distribution of promotional material for the Brahman breed. Ads were placed in various magazines, including several state cattleman magazines as well as major magazines representing our marketing area. The Annual Membership Meeting on February 27 in Houston, Texas will bring about the bi-annual changing of the guard for the American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA). The Board of Directors will appoint new officers and the President will select new Chairmen for the 2013-2014 term. In light of this, The Brahman Journal asked the current 2011-2012 Chairmen to take a moment and reflect on their terms in office. The ABBA website is updated frequently to keep up-to-date information available via the internet. Email webblasts are sent out at least twice monthly as new information becomes available. The ABBA also has it’s own Facebook page with many loyal followers. With an advertising budget of $40,000, the most efficient method of advertising must be utilized. We plan one year in advance what areas we will target with the funds we are allocated. Plans for 2013 include continued print advertising in major beef magazines, continued updating of our website, Facebook and the continuation of e-blasts to inform the membership of ongoing events and news. We also plan to develop and run commercials on RFD-TV’s American Rancher program several times in 2013. We are looking in to the possibility of making our webpage mobile phone friendly as well as the possibility of developing an IPhone app to allow easy access to cattle information. I have served as the Communications Committee chairman for the past six years. I have had the privilege of working with some great committee members who have a great love for Brahman cattle and want to see our great breed expanded farther across our country. I want to personally thank each one of these members for their dedication and hard work in helping to develop great promotional avenues for this great breed of cattle. Committee members in the past two years included: Neil Hudgins, Dinah Weil, Dr. Scott Satterfield, Jim Usery, Rachel Cutrer, Tommy Stadler and Rick Butler. My immediate predecessor, Dinah Weil, had done a wonderful job and knew so many International breeders. Tommy Stadler Finance Committee It has been an honor and pleasure to serve as ABBA Secretary/Treasurer for the past two years. As Chairman of the Finance Committee I was fortunate to have Ed Cullers, Carl Fontenot and Pat Cone, Vice-Chair serve on the Finance Committee with me. The Committee’s primary responsibilities are (1) prepare and present an annual budget to the Board of Directors and (2) monitor the financial performance of ABBA throughout the year. Our financial performance during each of the two preceding years has been excellent. We ended each year with an operating profit. A continuation of a trend established several years ago. These operating profits were achieved while adding the position of Director of Communications and Youth Activities and increasing funds to our advertising programs. Each standing committee was fully funded during 2012. This success was due to the hard work of our ABBA staff and our standing committees. The Finance Committee also reviewed accounting procedures with our independent auditor and our investment portfolio was evaluated consistent with direction provided by our Board of Directors. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as ABBA Secretary/Treasurer. It has been an honor to serve such an amazing group of people that make up the ABBA. The challenge was trying to continue the great work the committee had been doing in years past. Our main purpose on our committee is to promote the American Brahman breed on a world wide basis. Many members may not know that our main funding is from the United States Livestock and Genetic Export or USLGE. Our job is acquire and then budget this funding for ads in the International journals, providing speakers and other promotional materials and providing judges for International Shows. We also organize group trips to various International events. We accomplished this as well as developing the International American Brahman video, which is available to anyone through the ABBA office. We spent a good deal of time making the Panama WBC a destination for around one hundred of our members. We have already begun planning the 2014 WBC trip to South Africa. For those of you who don’t travel much, it is a great way to combine business with pleasure and meet many wonderful people. Our 2nd annual meet and greet gathering at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is to be held February 28th at 6:30 pm. This is another way of saying thank you to our International guests for visiting. I encourage everyone to come and have a good time. Other future projects include Educational material on the dual purpose of the American Brahman in the tropical climates-Beef and Milk. We are also planning an International Educational event in the near future. I want to thank all of my committee members and of course Armelinda and Chris for all their hard work and making the last two years very enjoyable and rewarding. Dr. Scott Satterfield International Committee When Bob Hudgins asked me to chair the International Committee, I took it as Dean Burkhardt Membership Committee For the past two years, I have represented our area on the ABBA Board of Directors. Both years, I have served on the Membership/ Member Services Committee and, this past year, was its Chairman. During my term on this committee, we hosted two ABBA Conventions and are busy planning next year’s membership convention. We called on ranch realtors in Hempstead, Brenham, New Ulm, Weimar, and San Antonio, and distributed a brochure that we had developed that promotes the Brahman breed to prospective ranch buyers. The ranch realtor brochure suggests that, when a person is purchasing a ranch; he or she consider stocking it with Brahman Cattle. We updated many of the ABBA information materials and have planned activities to assist our current members, including assigning a committee member to call on and welcome all new ABBA members, answer any questions, tell them about ABBA services, and introduce our great website. We have also actively recruited new breeders, for example, by posting a banner at shows saying, “Please consider joining the parent organization of the AJBA, the ABBA”. The committee has been very active and I have enjoyed working with them as together we have made the ABBA a better organization. Burkhardt J.D. Sartwelle, Jr. Marketing Committee Your ABBA Marketing Committee has been very busy for the past two years and accomplished much. All CONTINUED on PAGE 18 16 | The Brahman Journal br ahmanjournal . com march 2013 | 17 Reflections continued from page 16 members of the Committee are, among other things, very industry oriented, commercial world cow-folks who have a good perspective of our breed’s place in the world of beef production. The Committee considers all things that come before the Association or your Board along the lines of marketing the American Brahman and or their offspring; the committee works with our affiliates, area associations and professional sales managers that promote sales that include Brahman blooded cattle. The committee helps develop marketing strategies aimed at the commercial world and further acceptance of Brahman blooded cattle where ever they might be. As with all committees, the marketing committee formulates marketing policies and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors for final action, co-ordination and implementation with our ABBA staff. . The Committee is charged with the responsibility of administering our industry leading ABBA F1 Program that includes the processes of certifying the Golden Certified and Certified F1 females and the recently established F1+ Program that recognizes and promotes the produce of the Certified F1 female. The committee looks at procedures and fees of the Program that has become the most successful of all breed associations that have commercial female programs. In 2012 the committee recommended an addition to the F1 Program which has been dubbed the F1 Plus (F1+) Program that is just now getting kicked off. The F1+ Program recognizes the female produced from the Golden Certified or Certified female when mated to a registered beef breed bull. It’s early acceptance is apparent and growth in the program is expected. It is expected that ABBA can promote more known ¼ blooded cattle into areas that previously have had only imitations. It is anticipated that our breed has a 3-4 year window to aggressively promote Brahman blood as the nation rebuilds our cowherds in the face of continuing droughts and elevated temperatures. conduct their 2nd Annual Sale of Brahmans and Brahman blooded females on April 6, in Hattiesburg, MS. This sale follows a very successful first time effort last year. The committee has several on-going projects at the end of two years that includes further work with affiliates and area sales and F1 field days in new areas to include a field day in the Ok, MO, AR, KS (four state area) and one in Florida. The very next project is the 26th Annual National F1 Female Sale and TBA Sponsored Brahman Female Sale to be conducted on March 16 at the Caldwell Livestock Commission. Sale Chairman Milton Charanza indicates that this year’s annual Sale will include many good females. Immediately after is the Louisiana Brahman Association’s Annual Sale of F1’s and Brahman females on March 23, at Dominique’s Stockyards in Carencro, LA. The Deep South Brahman Association will John Coleman Locke The committee had input into the finishing touches of the Long Range Planning Committee that wrapped up its work this past fall. 18 | The Brahman Journal Performance Committee 2012 was a productive year for the Research and Breed Improvement Committee. We continue to see ideas implemented that were a result of ABBA’s long range plan and Think Tank Session. As we move forward into 2013 our mission continues to be increasing participation in performance programs so that we may continually use this data to improve our great breed. We have seen a marked increase in ultrasound data being submitted as well as an increase in participation in the Brahman Carcass Evaluation Project. Available Ultrasound CONTINUED on PAGE 22 In the past two years, the committee oversaw the transition of our ABBA National F1 Female Sale to another location and contracted Broken Triangle Cattle Marketing to be the sale manager. Two years ago, the committee began work on revamping and overhauling the certifying procedures of the F1 Program that has dramatically revitalized the Program and increased the number of participants in the Program and the numbers of females Certified. The new procedures have added much to Association income this past year, mainly due to dramatically less cost associated with ear tags in-house option in lieu of certificates from our registry provider. The Committee has a good many ambitious plans for the future that hopefully will be carried out in the next two years by another aggressive committee. Small steps, but steps in the right direction that we hope will encourage members to collect and submit data on their cattle and participate in the programs ABBA makes available to them. We are in the process of collecting data and investigating research on reciprocal birth weights as well as making maternal birthweight EPD’s available to breeders. Also, a few short instructional videos are going to be produced in the near future to educate more of our breeders on subjects such as measuring birth weights, the carcass ultrasound collection process, pen scoring cattle for disposition, the Carcass Evaluation Project and resulting breeder success stories, and the importance of submitting data for breed improvement. The importance of educating our breeders on pen scoring and the need to develop a disposition EPD is at the forefront of what the committee hopes to accomplish in the near term. It has been an honor to serve as chairman of the Research and Breed Improvement Committee. As I look to the future I know our committee will continue to work for the betterment of the breed and strive to develop programs that will make a difference. As chairman of the show committee my objective was to make our show ring a more fair and level playing field. It is a 22 | The Brahman Journal multi-faceted goal that sounds so simple but in actuality is very difficult to attain. The committee continuously worked so that all exhibitors, whether large or small, had an equal chance to promote their cattle as deserving winners with the cutting edge genetics of our breed. We must always keep in mind that our show ring champions are considered the ideals of the Brahman breed worldwide. To achieve this objective several things have been improved and implemented. We continued to evaluate the weights and measurement system. This has accomplished more uniform show ring classes and can be used now and in the future to guide our breed toward a desired frame score by raising and lowering the parameters. “Weights and measures” is in no way an effort to discriminate against more efficient cattle but is a method to identify those animals that represent a natural growth curve sought by today’s commercial and registered beef industries. Your show committee also worked tirelessly to present a “Code of Ethics.” Our breed should feel a sense of pride that the “Code of Ethics” was recently passed by the Board of Directors. Although not a perfect document, it sends a strong message to exhibitors and spectators worldwide that our breed will not tolerate unethical behavior and self-serving conflicts of interest in our show ring. The most recent action of your show committee was the revised “Color Rule.” Some might not be aware, but we have had continual conflict over the present rule which determines in what color division an animal is shown or “classified” solely by color. I feel the new rule will better identify where cattle of varying degrees of color and red/gray pedigrees should be shown. Under the new ruling, the color committee, appointed by the show committee chairman, will evaluate any “questionable” animals on a 3-trait basis using color, breed character and pedigree. All three characteristics will all be considered on an equal basis. Basically, consideration of color was the only criteria used in the past. Although this revised color rule might cause some lack of uniformity of color in our show ring, it will better guide where the animal should be shown. In conclusion, I want to say thank you to president Hudgins for his confidence in my leadership, and I hope that all we have accomplished will improve the participation, fairness and perception of our show ring. Rachel Cutrer Youth Committee It has been my pleasure to serve for the last 6 years as chairman of the youth activities committee. I feel like I can speak for everyone who serves on the committee by saying our greatest joy is volunteering to help the young people in the Brahman breed. Our major work revolves around hosting and organizing the All American National Junior Brahman Show each summer, where we have nearly 250 young people who are showing Brahman cattle. However it’s about much more than the show. Scholarships, youth leadership opportunities, and educational contests are things that the youth committee works very hard to provide to the AJBA members. We feel it is our goal to help facilitate the actions of the AJBA Junior Board of Directors and their members. Our committee thanks all of the parents, volunteers, and donors who contribute to the AJBA to help provide as many opportunities possible for young Brahman enthusiasts. T he Brahman Journal staff would like to thank all the Committee Chairmen for their hardwork, dedication and service to the American Brahman breed! br ahmanjournal . com march 2013 | 25 directors ABBA Board of Directors E le c tion The American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) Board of Director election ballots were tabulated by members of the Executive Committee on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the Houston headquarters. Newly elected directors for the 20132014 term are as follows: Area 1 - Jim Bob Trant, Kenneth Allen (2013); Area 2 - Terry Novak; Area 3 - Wade Watkins, John Coleman Locke, Steve Hudgins, Dean Burkhardt, Brandon Cutrer; Area 4 - David Domsch, Glen Ruschhaupt, Rudy Rios; Area 6 - Shirley Watts, Billie Farris, Patricia Collins, Steamer Swaner; Area 7 - Craig Fontenot, Sam Duplantis; Area 8 - George Kempfer; Area 11 - Dr. Robert Barlow; and Area 13 - Ricky Hammonds, Steve Wilkins. The newly constituted Board of Directors shall meet during a recess of the Annual Membership Meeting at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Wednesday, February 26 to elect the association’s President, Vice President, Secretary Treasurer and six directors to serve as members of the Executive Committee. Per the association’s constitution (Artivle V, Section 1) all affairs of the ABBA are under the control the ABBA Board of Directors. “These elected representatives represent you and help make the decisions that affect the entire breed,” ABBA Vice President Chris Shivers wrote in his February letter to the membership. The Board is composed of 44 elected officials elected from 11 domestic areas and one area that contains all international ABBA members. Directors serve a two year term and are elected by ABBA members from their geographical area. (See map on page 28.) The association by-laws state that the number of director positions for each area (except Area 14) are allocated by “each area’s prorated share of the total number of Active Members and registrations… the number of Active Members shall have 10 times the weighted importance of registrations.” “Many times members ask what type of a director they should elect,” Shivers states. “If I were to describe the perfect director it would be one that was in tune with the views and philosophies of his constituents. A good director needs to set his personal agenda aside and make decisions that are the best for the organization. Lastly, a good director should be a team player and be able to work well with the other board members. I’m not suggesting that someone should not have their own views, but should be able to reason and work with other directors to accomplish goals that are best for the association.” To be eligible to serve as a director, an individual must submit performance information and he/she or the Membership they represent must register with the Association a minimum of 10 animals each year beginning with the calendar year prior to their nomination and the calendar year prior to the beginning of the second year of their term of office. In addition to the 44 members on the board, past presidents who remain active ABBA members have a lifetime seat on the board of directors, and the Board of Directors may elect one Director Emeritus annually. To be eligible for a Director Emeritus position, a person must be a previous director “with long, continuous and distinguished service to the Breed.” Director Emeritus officials have all the rights and privileges of a regularly elected director. The total number of Directors Emeritus may not exceed ten percent of the elected Board. “You are fortunate to be represented by an outstanding leadership body and I’m sure those that are elected or re-elected will serve you well,” Shivers said. La Asociación Americana de Criadores de Brahman (ABBA) el Miércoles 6 de febrero 2013, en la Junta se determinaron los directores, en la sede de Houston. Gayden A Louisiana native, Harry P. Gayden joined the American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) in 1948 as the association's first Executive Secretary. Under his leadership, the breed's herdbook increased from 100, 000 head in 1948 to 525,000 head in 1974, with annual registrations totaling 23,000 at the time of his retirement. In speaking to the annual membership meeting upon the announcement of Gayden’s retirement, then-ABBA President Max E. Hammond said, “Our organization was fortunate in having someone of Gayden's ability heading it for the past 26 years. He will retire having served longer than any other present breed secretary. This clearly demonstrates the dedication he has had to this association and this breed of cattle." Al hablar en la reunión anual de miembros en el anuncio del retiro Gayden, el entonces presidente de ABBA Max E. Hammond dijo: “Nuestra organización tuvo la suerte de tener a alguien de la capacidad Gayden durante los últimos 26 años. Se retirará después de haber servido más tiempo a la raza que cualquier otro secretario actual. Esto demuestra claramente la dedicación que ha tenido para esta asociación y esta raza de ganado.” Gayden received his undergraduate degree in Animal Husbandry from Louisiana State University (LSU) in 1929 and in 1931 was awarded an M.S. degree in Dairy Husbandry from the University of Minnesota. Beginning his animal science career in 1931, Gayden was an instructor in the Dairy and Animal Husbandry Departments at LSU. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in the LSU Animal Science Department in 1934 and served in that capacity until 1940. Prior to joining the ABBA staff in 1948, he was employed as an Associate Animal Husbandryman by the Louisiana Agricultural Extension Service. Gayden was involved in several beef cattle industry organizations; he was a director of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and a member of the Agricultural Committee of the Houston Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the ABBA Board of Directors. He received numerous Brahman accolades. In 1973, he was the Texas Brahman Association Beef Booster of the Year, and in 1989, the International Show was dedicated to him. Gayden is being inducted into the Hall of Fame posthumously as he passed away in June of 1996. Coleman Locke of J.D. Hudgins, Inc. in Hungerford, Texas will have the honor of giving the award presentation. Coleman’s father, Leon Locke, was one of the 15 ABBA Presidents Gayden worked along side.
