No. 766 RESOLUTION WHEREAS, The passing of Fred Schluens, an esteemed resident of Millheim, on April 19, 1993, at the age of 82, has brought a great loss to the many friends and relatives of this beloved gentleman; and WHEREAS, A pioneer Austin County Brahman breeder, Mr. Schluens began breeding Brahman cattle at the age of 13, assuming many responsibilities beyond his years as the oldest in his family following the death of his father; and WHEREAS, Despite never having had the opportunity to study genetics in college, Mr. Schluens was an avid reader who, through trial and error, went on to develop one of the finest herds of purebred polled Brahman cattle in the country; and WHEREAS, In addition to raising cattle, Mr. Schluens grew peanuts in Austin County for 61 years, was the first in the county to own a tractor, and trapped more than 650 coyotes over the course of his lifetime; and WHEREAS, An avid storyteller as well, this rugged gentleman epitomized the Texan of old, who worked hard all his life, lived off the land, and enjoyed life to the fullest along the way; though his presence is gone from us now, his memory will long endure in the hearts of the many people whose lives he touched during his years on this earth; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Fred Schluens and extend sincere sympathy to his many friends and family members; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Fred Schluens.
