Greetings from Saint Leo University!
As promised we have more instructions in order for you to complete your placement exams so you can be
registered for classes appropriately. It is essential that you complete these exams between May 15 and
July 1.
Things you need to know:
1. You must schedule an appointment to take these exams 3 days prior to taking them through
Proctor U. If the exam is not taken prior to July 1 you will be placed in basic level composition
and math classes by default and may be required to take additional course work to complete the
requirements for your degree.
2. Once scheduled for your exam please make sure to have a computer with webcam and photo ID
available for the proctor on test day. You will be asked to show a photo ID before you will be
allowed to take the test.
3. If scheduled 3 days in advance, the base testing fee is covered by the university. However, you will
be responsible for any late fees.
4. On the day of the test you will log in to Proctor U and eLion. You may access eLion via the
My.SaintLeo.edu portal at https://my.saintleo.edu. Prior to logging in, please be sure that you
have your username and password for the My.SaintLeo.edu portal so you can access eLion. If you
have not yet logged into the portal, please walk through the first time portal access instructions at
www.saintleo.edu/portalaccess. For your initial sign-in, you will need to provide your last name,
date of birth, and either your SLU student ID number or Social Security Number. International
students: If you need to verify your SLU student ID number, please contact Laura Rodriguez at
352-588-8283 or via email Laura.Rodriguez@saintleo.edu.
5. Review attached directions to access Proctor U and eLion prior to your testing appointment day.
6. Test will be broken down into three sections and can take a maximum of 2 hours total. (15 minutes
for Grammar, 40 minutes for Essay and 60 minutes for Math with a short approximately 5-10
minute break allotted if necessary )
7. Do take these tests seriously as they will impact your course placement. Be sure that you are well
rested and choose a time when you can complete the testing alone and without interruption.
8. Relax, do your best, and good luck!
English Placement
You will be taking a placement test to determine which English class is best for your first semester at Saint
Leo. This exam is an hour long and consists of two sections: the first is multiple-choice and will test your
knowledge of grammar and punctuation; the second is an essay that will demonstrate your ability to think
critically and communicate effectively.
Again, we urge you to take these tests seriously, and it is important that you understand in what courses
you might be placed. Saint Leo requires two sequenced composition courses, English 121 and English 122,
as part of our University Explorations (general education) program. However, occasionally incoming
students need a bit more preparation in order to succeed in English 121. Your results will either place you
in English 002, a course that covers the basic skills related to grammar, punctuation, and sentence and
paragraph structure but does not count toward University Explorations; or English 121, which reviews these
skills and goes on to study various types of essays. If you are placed in English 002 for Fall 2013 semester,
you will then take English 121 in Spring 2014.
Math Placement
You will be taking a mathematics placement exam designed to measure your knowledge of basic and
intermediate algebra. Your results will be used to determine which math course suits you best during your
first semester at Saint Leo. The exam will be in two parts. The level 1 exam tests student knowledge of
basic algebra and the level 2 exam tests students’ knowledge in intermediate algebra. The time limits for
the two exams are respectively 25 minutes and 35 minutes. You should be aware that all Saint Leo
University students are required to take a mathematics class as a University Explorations (general
education) requirement. This requirement may vary depending on the student’s major. Students are
allowed to take the exam using a calculator.
I.
Students who need only one mathematics course to fulfill their University Explorations
requirement may take MAT 131 or College Mathematics. MAT 131 is a terminal course and
will not prepare students for higher mathematics courses.
II.
Sequence for all Business Majors:
MAT 003 (Basic Algebra)  MAT 141 (Finite
Mathematics)  MAT 201 (Introduction to Statistics)
III.
Sequence for all Majors who need MAT 151 (College Algebra) and/or above:
MAT 003
(Basic Algebra)  MAT 128 (Intermediate Algebra)  MAT 151 (College Algebra) MAT
152 (Trigonometry)  MAT 231 (Calculus)
Based on your placement score, you will be placed in MAT 003, MAT 128/141, or MAT 151/201.
